Box 847 Carbondale , CO 81623 Subject : Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System Design for Lot 8 Crystal View Heights , numbered as 0306 Red Dog Road, Carbondale , CO 81623 Dear Audrey, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions , Ltd. , performed a soils study and percolation testing for design of a septic system for the existing residence at the subject site . This study was conducted in accordance with Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations On-site Sewage Disposal Systems on Friday, May 14 , 1993 . The data obtained and our recommendations are based on the proposed system construction and the subsurface conditions encountered. Existing Construction : The existing residence is a three bedroom, two bathroom house . The property is served by a subdivision well and is approximately 2 acres in size . Site Conditions : The site is a lot in the Crystal View Heights subdivision to the west of State Highway 133 and several hundred feet from the Crystal River . The residential structure was constructed on the property in the early 1970 ' s . The existing septic system consisted of a 750-gallon single chamber concrete septic tank and, most likely a cinderblock drywell covered with railroad ties . This was a typical residential on-site sewage system at the time of the original construction. An inspection of the sewage disposal system site indicated that the existing septic tank/ seepage pit was malfunctioning. The ground surface , which appears natural in the proposed area of the replacement absorption field, slopes rather gently to the east at about a 5% to 10% grade . There is a rather deep natural drainage swale to the south and an irrigation ditch well above the subject property. The drainage has apparently been cut off by the development of several uphill lots Subsurface Conditions : A soil profile pit , within 10 feet of the proposed absorption area, was excavated on May 18th or 19th. The excavation revealed that no groundwater or bedrock was present within eight feet of the surface P.O.Rnx 6961 Snowmass Village.CO.81615 Office (303) 923.3289 Home (303) 923.2766 `"'/ Audrey Quiat 0306 Red Dog Road May 24 , 1993 Page 2 of the ground. In general , the subsoil consisted of a silty red sand with small cobbles and boulders , two to eight inches in diameter , to the depth of profile hole ninety-seven inches . The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1 . The test holes were excavated by this company, preparatory to the test , on the site of the proposed replacement absorption system. Percolation Testing: Percolation testing was performed in the proposed.absorption trench area north of the residence . This testing was performed in three shallow holes excavated with hand tools to a depth of twenty-seven to thirty-two inches . The percolation holes were pre-soaked before our testing by adding water the evening before and approximately five hours and one hour before beginning the percolation test . The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I . These results indicate the silty sand soils have an average percolation rate of 27 minutes per inch, a satisfactory percolation rate under Pitkin County criteria. Limitations : This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes . The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated . There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may require additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of these situations as soon as possible so reevaluation of our recommendations can be done . If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please call the office . Sincerely, Reviewed .Ey: /4/y/r- / A), ,r4!!!1 tlillllry Robert F .
