Nelson Environmental& Wastewater Solutions, Ltd E W May 26, 1995 S Mr. Dan Dertinger 0195 Red Dog Road Carbondale, CO 81623 Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System Design for Lot 6 Crystal View Heights, numbered as 0195 Red Dog Road, Carbondale, CO 81623 Dear Dan: As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolation tests on the subject property to design a septic system for the proposed residence. We conducted this study according to Section 5-1 through 5-5 of Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal System Regulation (Revised May 1995) on May 24, 1995. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. Please furnish this letter and an individual sewage disposal system permit application to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at your earliest opportunity so that you may obtain a permit to construct this sewage system. Existing and Proposed Construction: The existing residence is a two bedroom, one bathroom mobile home with some wooden additions constructed to create a third bedroom and an entryway. The property is served by a subdivision well and is 2.02 acres in size. The planned replacement residence is to be a three bedroom, two bathroom frame house with a full walk-out unfinished basement. The total living area of the house is reported to be less than 2000 square feet. The residential unit was moved onto the property in the early 1970's. The existing septic system consists of a 750-gallon single chamber concrete septic tank and, most likely, a cinder block drywell covered with railroad ties. This was a typical residential on-site sewage system at the time of the original construction. An inspection of the sewage disposal system indicated that the existing septic tank/ seepage pit was on the verge of malfunctioning and in need of replacement. Site Conditions: The site is a lot in the Crystal View Heights Subdivision to the West of State Highway 133 and seven hundred feet from the Crystal River. P.O.Box 6961 Snowmass Village,CO.81615 Office(303)923.3289 Home (303) 923.2766 Dertinger Residence Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System Design May 26, 1995 Page 2 The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the replacement absorption field, slopes to the East at about a 15% grade. The vegetation is lawn with a dense clumps of oak brush remaining on the undeveloped portions of the property. There is an irrigation ditch on the subject property well above the existing and proposed building sites. This ditch is lined with culvert and should present no problem. Subsurface Conditions: The profile hole was not yet dug. This can be done just before construction of the new absorption system and is considered necessary to obtain a permit to construct a replacement septic system. In general, the subsoil in which the percolation testing was done consisted of a loamy dark topsoil overlaying a reddish sandy loam with a few small cobbles and boulders, two in diameter, to the depth of three feet. Percolation Testing: The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Inset A of Figure 1 (Site Plan). The test holes were excavated at the site of the proposed replacement absorption system several days before the test. Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption trench area east of the residence. This testing was performed in four shallow holes dug with hand tools to a depth of thirty-four to thirty-seven inches. The percolation holes pre-soaked before our testing measurements by adding eighteen gallons of water at 9:30 a.m., and refilling the holes approximately every two hours during the day of the test and again one half hour before beginning the percolation test. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. Test hole #3 exhibited a somewhat more rapid percolation rate, probably explained by the smaller diameter of the test hole (5" as opposed to 10" for#1, #2, and #4). The rest of the results were quite consistent and indicate the sandy loam soils have an average percolation rate of 7 minutes per inch, a satisfactory percolation rate under Pitkin County criteria. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation, if Dertinger Residence Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System Design May 26, 1995 Page 3 further excavation reveals conditions different from those described.
