Carbondale, CO 81623 Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System Design for Lot 2 Crystal View Heights, numbered as 0069 Red Dog Road, Carbondale, CO 81623 Dear Thaleia and Greg, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolation testing for design of a replacement septic system for the existing residence at the subject site. This study was conducted according to Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Renulations On-site SMVM DiumW Systems on October 11, 1994. The data obtained and our recommendations are based on the proposed system construction and the subsurface conditions encountered. You should furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Departrnertt to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. The existing residence is a two bedroom, one bathroom mobile home with some wooden additions constructed. The property is served by a subdivision well and is approximately 1 acre in The residential unit was moved onto the property in the early 1970's. The existing septic system consists of a 750 -gallon single chamber concrete septic tank and, most likely, a cinderblock drywell covered with railroad ties. This was a typical residential on-site sewage system at the time of the original construction. An inspection of the sewage disposal system indicated that the existing septic tank/ seepage pit was malfunctioning and in need of replacement. �ita��dita�� The site is a lot in the Crystal View Heights Subdivision to the West of State Highway 133 and several hundred feet from the Crystal River. The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the replacement absorption field, slopes to the East at about a 15% grade. The vegetation is lawn with a few small clumps of oak brush rases. There is an irrigation ditch well above the subject property. This ditch is lined with culvert and > XmW present no problem. Ii P.O. In general, the subsoil consisted of a loamy dark topsoil overlaying a red sandy silt with small cobbles and boulders, two to eight inches in diameter, to the depth of cuts, twenty feet. perMALiiN T2M The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were excavated before the test at the site of the proposed rephmment absorption system. Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption trench area east of the residence. This testing was performed in five shallow holes dug with hand tools to a depth of thirty-nine to forty-two inches. The percolation holes were pre-soaked before our testing by adding water approximately every two hours during the day of the test beginning at 9:30 a.m., and again one hour before beginning the percolmon test. The resuhs of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. Test hole #4 exhibited very rapid percolation, probably explained by a rodent burrow or the excavationof ditches for the sprinkler system lines in the area. The rest of the resuhs were quite consistent and indicate the loam soils have an average percolation rate of 9 minutes per inch, a satisfactory percolation rate under Pitkin County c+rtaria. 1: This report las been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may require additional evaluation. If further excavation reveals conditions different from those described, this office should be advised of the situation as soon as possible. This will allow for a reevaluation of our recommendations.
