The legal description of the property is Lot 10, Filing 1, Crystal View Heights. Records were provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (Parcel ID #2649-044- 01-014). The subject OWTS consists of one 750 -gallon, two-compartment concrete septic tank followed by a drywell. Records indicate the original system was documented by two separate Pitkin County memos in 1975. In 1983, to allow continued use of the existing OWTS for a new, 2 -bedroom cabin, a baffle wall was installed in the existing septic tank, an inlet tee, 2 -feet riser rings on each septic tank manhole lid, and access to the drywell. At the time of the inspection, the septic tank appeared to holding liquid normally. A clay inlet tee was present, but the outlet tee had broken off. This outlet tee must be repaired. We recommend installation of an effluent filter on the outlet tee, if possible, once the outlet tee is replaced (vertical pipe must be 4 -inches in diameter). One of the septic tank lids showed signs of deterioration; however, there was still coverage of the manhole lid. Solids in the septic tank warrant pumping. There is access to the drywell via a 4 -inch PVC pipe. The depth of the drywell and liquid level in the drywell was measured. Total depth of the drywell was 123" (to surface) and there was 51" of liquid in the bottom of the drywell. The liquid in the drywell will be pumped out when the septic tank is pumped to allow resting of the soils surrounding the drywell. No effluent was found to be surfacing, and no back-ups were occurring. We recommend monitoring the liquid level in the drywell to gauge future performance of the system. This evaluation is not a guarantee of future system performance. This inspection is good for one year. Repairs that must occur prior to obtaining an OWTS Use Permit: • Pump septic tank. • Pump liquid in drywell. • Repair outlet tee in septic tank. Recommendations: • Replace deteriorating manhole lid. • Add effluent filter to outlet tee, if possible. If added, this filter needs to be cleaned annually, or as needed. • Monitor liquid levels in drywell to gauge performance. This report, in addition to documentation that required repairs were completed, should be submitted to the Pitkin County Environmental Health Department.
