Construction history - The permitted concrete dosing siphon tank was initially installed backwards, and during construction one outlet pipe from the distribution box was damaged. After review the tank was installed correctly, and the concrete distribution box was replaced and re -plumbed. During the construction it was noted the `upper' gravelless chamber trench was filled with import sand. The sand was removed and the `upper' chamber trench was repaired. We observed a 1000 -gallon existing septic tank with the addition of an effluent filter in the second compartment, and a 1000 -gallon concrete septic tank with a dosing siphon. The dosing tank was appropriately connected to the concrete distribution box. Access has been provided to the distribution box, and the box brought to grade. The tank was exposed during our observation. Risers were present for all compartments. The gallon tank was filled with water and was allowed to stand for 24 hours. The tank was verified to e water -tight. The dosing siphon was forced to dose and was working properly. A 4 -inch sewer pwith cleanouts was installed from the 2 -bedroom residence to the existing septic tank. 1 ^0 The septic tank was generally installed according to specifications. This observation is not a guarantee of workmanship and/or parts and materials. ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified if changes were to tank components. Please call with questions. The existing septic system currently serves a barn with one bathroom (1 toilet and 2 sinks) and one employee. A 2 -bedroom residence is proposed next to the barn. The subject property is located in Pitkin County, outside of the town of Carbondale, Colorado. The sub'ect OWS consists of one 750 -gallon, single -compartment concrete septic tank followed by two Each trench has 8 `standard' chambers. The OWS was permitted for a 2 -bedroom residence. A percolation rate of 10 MPI was indicated on the permit. The permit and as -built drawing are included in this report. OBSERVATIONS The 750 -gallon septic tank is accessible and is in good condition. A PVC tee was present on the inlet of the septic tank. The septic tank appears to have good integrity and has a sewage level to indicate the tank is working properly. The drain field area had 1 foot of snow during our observation, although some snow was removed for our observations. The area of the drain field has adequate vegetation, and the drain field area showed no signs of surfacing effluent, and had no indication of failure. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN We understand a 2 -bedroom residence will be constructed next to an existing barn, and up -gradient of the existing OWS. The OWS is in good condition, although requires the installation of an effluent filter on the outlet of the existing septic tank followed by one 500 -gallon concrete septic tank with a dosing siphon. OWS Evaluation and Design Project No. 1687 February 15'b 2010 Page 2 The drain field is in good condition and has 248 SF of field in two gravelless trenches. A 2 -bedroom proposed residence and a bathroom in the barn requires 222 SF of drain field. No additional drain field area is required. 2 -bedroom residence = 300 gals/day Toilet with 2 sinks and 1 persons = 35 gals/day Peak loading = (335 x 1.5) = 503 gals/day see Figure 3 for calculations The homeowner should pump the septic tank every two years and clean the effluent filter as needed. Garbage disposal use should be minimized, and non -biodegradable materials should not be placed into the OWS. Grease should not be placed in household drains. Loading from a water softener should not be discharged into the OWS. No hazardous wastes should be directed into the OWS. Mechanical room drains should not discharge into the OWS. The OWS is engineered for domestic waste only. ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION NOTES If design includes a pump, air release valves and weep holes should be installed to allow pump lines to drain to minimize risk of freezing. Excavation equipment must not drive in excavation of drain field due to the potential to compact soil. Extensions should be placed on all septic tank components to allow access to them from existing grade. Precast concrete tanks and distribution boxes should be used, unless plastic or fiberglass is required. Access to all tank compartments and distribution devices is optimal. INSTALLATION OBSERVATIONS ALL SERVICE septic, LLC, and the county must view the OWTS during construction. The OWTS observation should be performed before backfill, after placement of chambers and distribution pipes. Septic tanks, distribution devices, pumps, dosing siphons, and other plumbing, as applicable, must also be observed. ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified 48 houLs in advance to observe the installation. LIMITS: The design is based on information submitted. If soil conditions encountered are different from conditions described in report, ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified. All OWS construction must be according to the county regulations. Requirements not specified in this report must follow county regulations. The installer should have documented and demonstrated knowledge of the requirements and regulations of the county in which they are working. Please call with questions.
