We have had no contact regarding this permit since either the issue date or last extension date: hence the permit is considered expired. We should be notified whenever work on a system begins.(whether a system will be installed in full or in part and to be completed at a later date) so that we can do our inspection(s). The engineer who designed the system must also be contacted so that he/she can inspect the -installation. RE: Clay Residence - Septic System Design Notes The following are my design notes for the Clay Residence Septic System design.. The new system will add additional units to the old system now in place. Exact Size and location of the existing system are approximate. Existing 2 bedrooms, 1,000 Sq Ft, 1 - 1,000 gallon tank, 14 infiltrators in two trenches of 7 units each. 1996 pert rate 11 mpi - 4 - Bedrooms - Approx. 2,500 Square Feet of living area - 100 gallons per day per person - 11 minutes per inch perc rates - Perc Test by Bob Nelson 1996 - Ground water 30.0+\- feet from surface Flow = Q = 4 bed rooms x 2 peo/br x 100 gal/day/per x 1.75 = 1,400 gallons per day Tank sizing - 4 - Bed Rooms requires a minimum of 1,750 gallons of septic tanks; Q X 1.25. The existing 1,000 gallon tank condition is unknown, but is only 3 years old and assumed to be useable. If the existing tank is pumped and determined to be in good condition, it may be used in the new system. An additional 1,000 gallon tank is to be installed in series with the existing tank on the downstream side of the existing tank. Additional infiltrators needed are 42 - 14 = 28 additional infiltrators. System Design is a total of 42 units in a trench system 44 -feet long ( 6 rows or trenches, 7 units in each trench). Add two trenches on each side of the existing two trenches, 10 apart center to center. For even flow distribution, the splitter box will need to be replaced to allow 3 distribution lines out of the box. The three distribution lines will then be split into a set of two trenches each. All piping to be 4" SDR 35 PVC and bedded in a minimum of 2" under and 6" over of 3/4" screened rock. The area under the splitter box will be compacted to 95% Std. Proctor Bed. New 1,000 gallon tank will be installed in the general area of the existing tank. Tees will be installed on both the inffluent and effluent lines of the tank, set on the inside of the tank. Set top of line from tee within 1" 'of the roof of the tank end extend line downward 12" below center line of tee.- Fill tank with water prior to backfill to check for leaks and leave water in tank for placing the system in service. Septic tanks will be a two -chambered tanks. The new system will be installed in the approximately the same area as the existing system. Piping from the home to the tank and from the tank to the bed system will be 4" SDR 35 PVC laid at a minimum of 1%. Insulate lines with less than 5 -foot of cover or in uninsulated crawl spaces. Install the 42 unit bed system as shown on drawing Total System size is - 44" X 501. Bed system to be install to within 1" of level. Adjustments to fit site contours and conditions may be made per approval of the engineer. Elevations of the tank and trenches shall be finalized in the field by the engineer. It was apparent that some septic tank effluent was surfacing over the old seepage pit, particularly when laundry was done. As a result of this condition and as requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolation tests for a replacement septic system for the house. We conducted this study in accordance with Article 5 of the Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal &stem Reculation.We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. We will furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at our earliest convenience in order for you to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. Existing Construction and Building Site: The house was originally constructed in the late 1960'.4. The residence is on a tract of abproximately 2.6 acres. , . The existing residence is a house with two bedrooms and 1two and one-half bathrooms and Q� approximately 1000 square feet of finished living area. The well is located a sufficient distance from obvious sources of contamination, such as the proposed septic system location. Existing On-site Wastewater Dispersal_ System We were not able to locate a permit for the septic system by reviewing the Pitkin County Environmental Health Department records. The size and construction of the septic system P.O.Box b96lSnowmaellL0�OZ6i O�-�Xyd 5 Offi�H�� I�ZId/I�- 3280 �dSye(303) NIN Z�titi766 Q M 66-91-1�flf I IDyd k1l ^. 10� Casebeer Septic System Investigation and Percolation Tests 0358 Crystal Lane December 1, 1995 Page 2 is unknown, although it is obvious from pumping records and the owners recollection that the existing septic tank is minimum 750 gallons in volume and that the absorption area consisted of a seepage pit Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile, 10 feet West of the proposed absorption area and just downhill, was excavated to a depth of ten feet. - The excavation revealed that there -was no groundwater - apparent or bedrock present within ten feet below the surface of the ground. The soils consisted of about 10 to 12 inches of dark organic clay loam topsoil. The subsoil was a red, loamy sand\of uniform consistency. The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were excavated at the bottom of shallow, four -foot backhoe pits by hand. Before the test, the sidewalls were scrapped, however no gravel was placed in the test holes to prevent scouring when water was added. Percolation Testina: Percolation testing was performed in the proposed holeson trench area West Of the excavated to a total depth of residence. This testing was performed in threeshallow between fifty four and sixty inches. An initial filling of the percolation test holes was done by adding approximately 10 gallons of water to each hole the aftemoon of the day before the percolation test was conducted. The percolation holes were then further pre-soaked by adding water to refill the test holes to a depth of fourteen inches twice fof the eight hour perm before beginning the percolation test. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the loamy sands have an average percolation rate of 11 minutes per inch, a satisfactory percolation rate under Pitkin County criteria. Minimum Pitkin County Requirements: The percolation rates of the soils were measured at an average of 11 minutes per inch. This flow would require a septic tank of 750 or 1000 gallons in volume, and a minimum of 350 square feet of standard, gravel seepage area for the two bedroom house, We recommend that you retain the existing septic tank and add another two -chamber 1000 - gallon concrete tank, in series, at the location of the existing seepage pit. You have indicated a preference for the use of the "Infiltrator'"" graveless leaching chamber absorption trench for the replacement absorption system on this property. The use of -- -� "InflltratorTm" leaching chamberscurrentlyallows a 30% reduction in absorption area under County regulations. This reduction is based on manufacturer's claims and on an approval of such a reduction by the Colorado Department of Health, Water Quality Control Division. Therefore, the suggested septic system absorption area layout incorporates the alternative listed above. Based upon the percolation rate, minimum County requirements, and the reduction mentioned, a total of 248 square feet of trench bottom area is necessary. We recommend that the septic system consist of two terraced trenches, each 44 feet long and containing seven leaching chamber sections. The completed installation will require a total of 14 sections of leaching chamber. It is advisable to equalize the flow to the two trenches with a distribution box, placed between the septic tank and the trench excavation. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may need additional evaluation, if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described This office should be advised -of any unusual situations as soon as possible so that we may reevaluate our recommendations.
