The final plans you submitted were dated 10/25/95, therefore the plan design falls under the criteria of the new regulations which were in effect on May 31, 1995. The design is not in compliance with the following provisions of these regulations. 1) "7-1 Flow Used for Design: Maximum flow or Design Flow is 175 percent of average daily flow and is the basis for design ....In no event may the system be designed for a lesser capacity than the anticipated maximum daily sewage flow." Your design calculations are based on a flow of Q = 300 gpd. You did not include a design flow factor in your calculations. Section 10-1.8 requires that systems using mechanical apparatus must install a signal device inside the dwelling, if possible, that will provide a visual and audible warning to the user that the system is not operating properly. In addition, a dosing frequency for sand would be 4 doses per day. Ernie, when Terry initially discussed a septic system for this .2 acre lot which is long and narrow, it appeared that his only option was to install a composting toilet for black water and to design a septic system for the gray water based on fixture count. It seems as though this may still be his most viable option. After you review this letter, please contact this department to discuss issues which are noted. As a reminder, no work may be done on this system until a permit is issued. Wherever there is a poorly working septic system, a "SUN -MAR" can take care of the toilet waste; where therd is an outhouse, we offer the luxury of an indoor facility; and where there is no toilet at all, a "SUN -MAR" provides the right environmental choice. In fact, wherever there is an inadequate means of disposing of toilet waste, a "SuN-Max" composting toilet offers a superior solution. One that is not only economical to install and operate, but is entirely in harmony with nature. THE ENVIRONMENTAL SOLUTION Composting toilets use the natural processes of decomposition and evaporation to recycle human wastes. They are quick to install, easy to use, and require no water supply or sewer lines. Waste entering the toilet is over 90% water content, and this is evaporated, and carried back to the atmosphere through the vent system. The small amount of remaining material is converted back to fertilizing soil by means of natural decomposition. By recycling in this way, NO Septic Systems, NO Holding Tanks, and NO Chemicals are needed to handle toilet wastes. Suddenly, human waste becomes a valuable resource rather than a source of pollutants and undesirable nutrients in our groundwater. HOW COMPOSTING WORKS Working in a similar way to the compost heap in the backyard, but odorlessly, and many times faster, "SUN -MAR" toilets and toilet systems break down human waste and toilet paper through the natural process of decomposition. Heat, oxygen, moisture, and organic material are needed to facilitate this breakdown, and allow natural organisms called microbes II I I to transform the waste into a I useful garden fertilizer. Heat is generated by the compost itself, assisted by the heating �— element (on electric models); while oxygen is provided by the ventilation system, and the tumbling action of the composting drum. Organic material in the form of SUN -MAR peat mix is added manually. This provides an excellent form of organic carbon which is biologically active, absorbent, entraps oxygen, and speeds the composting process. Peat moss may be used as an acceptable substitute. Moisture is obtained directly from human waste, while the last and most important "ingredient", the microbes, are contained in rich top soil which is added to the compost to start the process. "MICROBES" AND THE "BIO -DRUM" Sux-MAR's insulated composting drum (we call it a Bio -drum) provides the best possible environment for aerobic microbes to thrive and dominate. This Bio -drum is uniquely able to provide a warm, moist, oxygen rich environment which allows fast, odorless, aerobic microbes to degrade the waste and toilet paper back to its basic minerals. Organic carbon is converted to carbon dioxide and hydrogen to water vapor. It is this high speed composting efficiency, made possible by the Bio -drum, which accounts for SuN-MAR'S ability to handle heavy or residential/commercial needs. "SUN -MAR" QUALITY SUN -MAR quality is legendary. The simplicity of our designs and our use of superior quality materials offer unmatched performance and trouble free reliability. These qualities are essential because your bathroom is no place to take risks! "SUN -MAR" units are designed so there is nothing to unscrew, break, get stuck, or corrode. Marine grade stainless steel, and indestructible fibreglass are used throughout. This fibreglass has a beautiful glossy finish which will not crack, stain, discolor, or deform over time. START UP AND USE "SUN -MAR" units require very little maintenance. To start, add peat mix and 1 quart of rich top soil to the composting drum. Continue to add peat mix at the rate of one cupful per person using the toilet per day. Toilet paper, a good source of carbon, should be added to the toilet as usual. The compost should be mixed and aerated every third day (or at the end of the weekend) while the toi- let is in use, simply by turning the drum handle and rotating the Bio -drum through 4-6 complete revolutions. In cottage use, some composted material is usually only extracted into the finishing drawer in the spring. In residential or commercial use, compost may be extracted more frequently. WINTER USE "SUN -MAR" makes its units out of fibreglass and marine grade stainless steel, so freezing temperatures will not damage the units even if the compost freezes in the drum. Composting action, however, decreases as the temperature drops, so extended winter use requires that the unit be kept at a minimum temperature of about 60°F (15°C) and the vent pipe be well insulated. For periodic use in winter, the toilet may be used as a holding tank, until the compost warms up and the microbes emerge from dormancy. ODOR FREE The engineered airflow within "SUN -MAR" units ensures there is vacuum which means there is no back draft, and hence no smell. In addition, the rotation and aeration made possible by the tumbling action of the Bio -drum, ensures a fast, aerobic, and therefore odorless breakdown of the compost. (Quite unlike the unpleasant anaerobic smell often found in a septic tank, outhouse, or backyard compost). a partial OVER FLOW SECURITY DRAINS "SUN -MAR" self contained electric toilets are engineered to evaporate all the liquid they receive during normal operation. However, an emergency safety drain is fitted, and this can be connected if the unit is expected to be subject to gross overload or exposed to prolonged power outages. Drain connection is optional on these models. On all non -electric and central 6" MOUND composting units, a 1" hose (8 feet -2" of COVER supplied with the unit) must be EARTH connected to the overflow drain. A drainpit (or cesspool) should be installed O1-2 FEET F GRAVEL in accordance with local regulations. In many areas it is about 1 foot deep and 2 feet in diameter. In places with high FEET levels of clay and rock, the diameter should APPROXIMATELY be wider. A sturdycover (plastic, tin or CESS POOL 2 FEET OF h (French Drain) LOOSE MATERIAL wood) and a 6" mound of earth should be placed over the drainpit to prevent soil and surface water from settling into the gravel. PRODUCT SELECTION This catalogue is designed to assist you in selecting the right toilet or toilet system for your needs. There are two basic types of units: - Self Contained Toilets that are installed in a bathroom, and, • Central Composting Toilet Systems where the composting unit is outside, or in a basement, and connected via a 3" pipe to a 1 pint flush toilet in the bathroom. Electric Self Contained Units are available in a number of different models, with the selection depending on capacity needs and, in some cases, space requirements. All self contained Bio -drum units are shown on pages 4-5, while the single chamber "TROPIC" is described on page 9. Central Composting Toilet Systems also come in a number of different versions, with the right choice dependent on space limitations. Central Composting Toilet System alternatives are shown on pages 7 and 8. Both self contained and central units are also available for those without electricity (no continuous supply of 110 Volt power). A complete model selection guide is presented on page 6. THE "SUN -MAR" THREE CHAMBER SYS'll A composting toilet system has three completely separate tasks:- • compost the waste and toilet paper quickly and odorlessly; • ensure that the finished compost is safe and easy to handle, and • evaporate the liquid. Many years ago "SUN -Mair" engineers realized that each of these tasks required a separate chamber with its own independent environment. This revolutionary three chamber approach proved so successful, that we were able to double the composting speeds of the old single chamber units with mechanical mixers. Today only one single chamber unit, the lower capacity "TROPIC", remains in the "SUN -MAR" product line. All other units work on the same three chamber principle first developed by SUN -MAR in 1979. The Composting Chamber "SUN -MAR" engineers found that the ideal conditions for fast, odorless composting could only be provided in a rotating drum, (we call it the Bio -drum). The Bio -drum is uniquely able to keep the compost b completely oxygenated, mixed, moist and warm, and so provide perfect conditions for fast, aerobic (and therefore odorless) composting. Waste enters the composting drum through an entry port located in the top of the Bio -drum. By turning the handle on the front of the unit, the drum rotates, and the compost tumbles, (assisted by a mixing baffle; thereby thoroughly and completely oxygenating and mixing every part of the compost. The Bio -drum is fitted with a door which closes automatically to keep the waste inside as the drum rotates. After turning, a lock automatically maintaii the Bio -drum in a top dead centre position ready to receive new material. To ensure that the compost cannot get saturated, a screen at the rear of the drum filters any excess liquid directly into the evaporating chamber. At the same time, by protecting the compost from direct heat, the Bio -drum keeps the compost uniformly moist. Lastly, the Bio -drum has the volume to hold the necessary mass of material to retain the natural heat developed in the core of the compost. Insulation on the outsid of the drum prevents heat loss. The warm, moist, oxygen rich conditions in the Bio -drum allow the microbes to quickly break down the waste into its essential minerals. When the drum gets % full, some compost is extracted into the finishing drawer. This is done simply by pulling the drum lock, and rotating the drum backwards. Now, the drum door remains open, and compost falls into the second chamber; -the compost finishing drawer. The Compost Finishing Drawer The compost finishing drawer, the second independent chamber, is immediately below the composting drum, and just above the evaporating chamber. Compost in this drawer is totally isolated from material in the Bio -drum. Although it is no longer subject to contamination from fresh waste, it should not be used on edible vegetable. While in the finishing drawer, the compost is surrounded by a stream of drying air, and absorbs the radiant heat from the evaporating chamber. It is here that composting and sanitation are completed, and the compost becomes safe to handle. The finishing drawer can be pulled out and removed by hand (no tools or screws are needed) and the sanitized compost emptied whenever it is necessary to extract more compost from the drum. The Evaporating Chamber The third chamber, which forms the base of the toilet, is the evaporating surface from where any excess liquids which cannot be absorbed by the i compost are evaporated or drained. Liquid is evaporated by drawing air through the intake holes at the base of the toilet, over the evaporating surface, and up the cent stack. On electric models air is drawn in by a fan, while non electric models use natural draft induced by the chimney effect of a 4" vent stack. In both cases a partial vacuum is maintained which ensures that no odors can escape. Electric models also have a thermostatically controlled heating element which is located in a sealed compartment underneath the evaporating chamber. the floor of the chamber hand warm to assist evaporation. This heater keeps SELF CONTAINED UNITS "SUN -MAR" self contained units are designed to be placed in the bathroom. All units are waterless, so no plumbing is required for water connection or sewage. Installation is very quick and easy, since the only task is to assemble the vent stack. Electric toilets plug into a standard electrical outlet. "SUN -MAR" self contained electric toilets evaporate all the liquid they receive under normal operating conditions. Because the complete waste stream is recycled, approvals are not normally required. Capacity varies with the size of the Bio -drum. Electric units with large Bio -drums have the greatest capacity, while those with no Bio -drum at all have very limited capabilities. The main difference between the two is that the CENTREX has been designed with the insulated Bio -drum mounted transversely. Also, the fan and vent have been located at the front to give the CENTREX a lower profile, and make it 100% front serviceable. The CENTREX and WCM have the same composting performance, but the differences in the physical arrangement of the components are often important from an installation point of view. Although the CENTREX is 27'/2" high, the waste inlet pipe is only 26'/2" from ground level. This low profile makes the CENTREX the unit of choice for installations under, or to the side of buildings where height is important, and the unit is to be vented up a side wall. If the CENTREX is to be exposed, electrical components should be protected from rain and flooding. The waste enters the CENTREX Bio -drum through a 3" inlet pipe which connects the unit to a 1 pint flush toilet in the bathroom. Where possible, this toilet should be right above the CENTREX because this arrangement is easier to install and a minimum of flushing water is needed to transport the waste. Although distances of over 20 ft. are not normally recommended, central units have been successfully installed up to 40 ft. away from the toilet. For such longer distances, an extra weekly flush through may be needed. The 3" waste piping should be either vertical (that is from 45° to 90°) and/or close to horizontal with a drop of from 'Is" to 1/<" per foot (a slope of about 2 to 3 degrees). Apart from very short runs, angles of 5° to 45' should be avoided because then the water tends to leave the waste behind. The CENTREX is supplied complete with a straight waste inlet connection. This can be replaced by a 45° or 90° fitting, if necessary, to provide inlet access from any direction. In Ontario, for some installations, horizontal piping may be limited by regulations. N f 1�1�t��L1v N continued Where there is not enough height for the waste to gravity feed from the toilet to the composting unit, the necessary height can often be obtained either by placing the toilet on a small platform in the bathroom, and/or lowering the central composting unit. The toilet may not have to be raised very far to achieve this. To avoid a step-up, a low profile toilet with a shortened pedestal can be used, and mounted on a 6" wooden platform to provide the correct seat height. If the composting unit is to be lowered, care should be taken to ensure that rainwater drains away from the unit and the finishing drawer can be removed. The CENTREX's evaporation performance of up to 2-3 gallons per day, may not be sufficient to evaporate all the liquid. This depends on the amount of flushing water and waste, the climatic conditions, and the warmth, moisture and volume of compost in the Bio -drum. The 1" drain hose supplied with the unit, should be hooked up, and excess liquid, if any, should be collected and/or disposed of in an approved facility such as a leach field, old septic system, holding tank or drain pit. Peat mix should be added and the Bio -drum rotated twice a week (while the unit is in use), or on departure (for weekend use). Some compost is removed in the Spring or when the Bio -drum gets 2/3 full, by rotating the drum backwards and extracting some compost into the pull-out finishing drawer. If the CENTREX is to be used throughout the winter, care must be taken to keep the installation warm. »L., Exposed piping should be insulated, and the unit should - be plugged in, and placed in a warm insulated enclosure. to CEN A light bulb is often all that is needed to keep such an enclosure warm. They are ideal for use with "SUN -MAR" Central Composting Toilet Systems, and are also often used with J holding tanks, overloaded septic systems, and in RV's. 5 10 "SUN -MAR" offers a number of different models from the plastic Aqua Magic IV to the popular ceramic Sealand 910 m and 510 models. The difference between the two Sealand units is that the 510 isF. fitted with a regular size toilet seat and so is 2" longer, and 1 " wider than the 5-3/6" 910. The fine china construction of these Sealand units provides superior quality, hygiene, cleanability and elegance - all at an affordable price. Sealand toilets come complete with seat assembly, pedestal cover, floor seal and mounting bolt package. Both 910 and 510 models require a 4 bolt floor flange (or a 2 bolt flange with the option to drill out two additional holes). Low profile ceramic toilets (the Sealand 911 and 511) are also available on special order. These units have a shortened pedestal and are designed for mounting on a 6" platform. • A simple foot pedal flush opens the water valve and gate when pushed down, and fills the bowl with ~�— water when lifted. A small amount of water is ed in the toilet bowl by a self-cleaning ball h a Teflon seal. Even gravity fed water iof tank is sufficient pressure for flushing, inter the units can be flushed manually, by i few cups of water into the bowl. "TROPIC" The "TROPIC" is "SUN-MAR's" original design. It is also our lowest capacity self contained composting toilet. Unlike all other "SUN -MAR" units, the `TROPIC" uses a single chamber design with two separate zones, one for composting, and the other for evaporation and compost collection. The bottom of the composting zone is a mesh screen on which the compost sits. The compost is mixed and aerated by rotating two paddle mixers, whose shafts extend to the rear of the composting zone. Finished compost and excess liquids drop through the grate into the evaporation and collection zone on the floor of the toilet. As with other "SUN -MAR" electric units, a fan mounted at the top rear of the unit draws air in through the intake (at the front of the TROPIC) and carries evaporated liquid up the vent stack. A thermostatically controlled heating element in the base of the TROPIC assists evaporation by keeping the floor of the evaporating and collection zone warm. LL� To mix or remove compost, the door at the front of the unit is easily removed simply by undoing two thumb screws. A crank handle is inserted into the paddle mixer shafts to mix and aerate the compost. Finished compost can be removed periodically by raking it into a compost collection tray. For those of you who do not, we visited some customers who invited us out to their cottages when they saw us at a recent Trade Show. While we haven't room to show all the installations, we hope you find this selection of snapshots and user comments helpful in choosing the right system for your needs. "TROPIC" - Mr. & Mrs. G.K. Caldwell, Caldwell Island. Installed: 1979 Mr. & Mrs. Caldwell in front of their cottage located on an island in the St. Lawrence River between Canada and the USA. Mr. Caldwell is showing his tomato plants which are fed with fertilizer from their TROPIC toilet. Some compost is extracted from their toilet every spring. The Caldwells use their toilet continuously from k 9 early spring to late t fall, "when I get frozen — out" says Mrs.Caldwell., They are very pleased with their toilet's performance over all these years. , "EXCEL" (Formerly «Bowls -XL") - James Udrow, Healey Lake. Installed: 1988 The Udrows are retired, and live at their cottage continuously for six months from the end of April to the beginning of November when they leave for Florida. James finds that his EXCEL can handle their needs comfortably, and he only has to extract some compost once a year in the spring, when they return from Florida. At that time they find the "compost is very nice and dry", and they remove about a pailful, which they use in their beautiful garden. We would like to think "SUN -MAR" deserves some of the credit! "EXCEL" - Mr. & Mrs. Bryn Rennie, Lake Baptiste Installed: 1983 Mr. & Mrs. Rennie in their cottage at Baptiste Lake, north of Bancroft. The "SUN -MAR," EXCEL was used year round for the first two years, and since then has been used from April to late fall each year. Mrs. Rennie and her husband are very pleased with their toilet which "has absolutely no smell". Mrs. Rennie throws all her kitchen greens into the toilet, as well as peat moss. The system is used by 5-6 people throughout the summer. "EXCEL N.E." - Kim & Steve Dubeau, Proudfoot Lake, Installed: 1991 This EXCEL N.E. (formerly the "SUN -MAR N.E.") is another of the many "SuN-MAR" installations around Proudfoot Lake. As Kim Dubeau says, "we've been very happy with it, and we'll also put one into the new cottage we're building." Bob Clark, their neighbor, has a family of 4. He uses his N.E. "every weekend from about May on, when the ice goes out". When asked what happens to the toilet paper, Clark said, "I just turn it before we leave, and when we come back everything is gone. I hope everyone buys one." We do too! "EXCEL N.E." - Mac Ogden, Pointe-au-Baril, Installed: 1982 Mr. Ogden has no electricity on his island. The cottage is rented out for 4-6 weeks every summer. He thinks the toilet is a wonder with high capacity and no smell. The toilet is heavily used throughout the summer. Mr. Ogden is shown in front of his compost pile, which, to his surprise was filled with tomato plants. Once a year, in spring, compost is extracted from toilet. Mr. Odgen (in the background) and Mrs. Ogden (closest to the camera) with daughter and friends. Their son and girlfriend were also expected for the weekend. 10 "WCM" - The Greenwoods, Healey Lake. Installed: 1991 The Greenwood's WCM, shown here installed with a handsome Sealand 910 in the bath- " 99 1 h 1 -1 - room, is one of the many SUN -MAR. units instal ed on t is e. In a typical "word of mouth" sequence, the sceptical neighbors closely watched the first "SUN -MAR" (installed 1985) for several years before adopting it. One of these interested observers, Shirley Martin, finally had another WCM user (her neighbor) put in a unit for her. Shirley spends all summer at her cottage, and is typically enthusiastic about her "SUN -MAR". "I really love it", said Shirley, "it's so much better than the old outhouse, especially when I'm here alone". "WCM" - W. Fletcher Keating, Horseshoe Lake. Installed: 1983 Fletcher Keating is shown in front of his "SUN -MAR" WCM unit which he purchased after seeing how well his neighbor's worked. Mr. Keating empties 2 or 3 drawers of compost every spring and does a minimum of maintenance. He just rotates the drum, adds peat moss and "absolutely nothing else", and is "not interested in knowing anything more". "I am a guy who wants to do a bare minimum" he said. The cottage is used throughout the summer by 2-3 people, and sometimes up to 12-15 people on weekends. Mr. Keating appreciates the fact that there is positively no smell. The low flush toilet is located inside the cottage above the "SUN -MAR" WCM. Note: The vent pipe (black) is installed along the outside wall with the diffusor on top. "WCM" - Frank Gauder, Lake Rosseau. Installed: 1980 Frank Gauder and his brothers and sister jointly own their cottage which they use all summer. The "SUN -MAR" WCM system is "very much appreciated by all members of the family who remember the old outhouse". The system has successfully handled parties for about 15 people. They have had no problems whatsoever. Peat Moss is added every weekend, and less than one drawer of compost is extracted once a year. Their low flush toilet is located straight above the WCM unit. When their own water supply is not working (shut off in the winter), they pour in water by hand to flush the toilet. It still works perfectly. "WCM" - The Wagners, Blackstone Lake. Installed: 1989 The Wagners use their cottage pretty well every weekend for four months over the summer, and rent it out for a two week period. When "SUN -MAR" visited we met the tenant, who was using the WCM for his second summer." We have no problem operating it. We just put in two handfuls of peat moss per person every day", he said. The Wagners and their next door neighbors, the Healey's, - (another WCM user) are vitally \ interested in preserving their Lake. They feel that all lots should be required to put in "Suit/ -MAR" units. We certainly like that idea! "VIDEO" An extensive 27 minute video is available on "SUN -MAR" Composting Toilet Systems. "WCM N.E." - The McCreadys, Proudfoot Lake Installed: 1992 Mr. McCready's cottage is one of about 30 on this remote lake where there is no electricity. "There are at least 4, and maybe up to 8, "Suit/ -MAR," toilet systems installed here", he said. "The more the merrier as far as we're concerned." Mr. McCready installed his unit himself with the help of a friend from the Ministry of the Environment. The WCM-N.E. , (now the CENTREX N.E.) is used by 5 people, and with guests, sometimes up to 9 or 10. "It was fine, just fine," enthused Mr. McCready, "If you follow the directions that come with it, it does exactly what it says it will do.' " The photo shows the excellent compost extracted during our visit. Mr. McCready feels his _�N system is "quite fine".
