If approval takes longer than 6 hours, a rate of $55 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time Of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit; second, before final approval of the ISDS permit. One 2500 -gallon septic tank (2000 gallon with extender to 2500), and 88 standard Infiltrator units had been installed in an 8 x 11 bed configuration. The bio -filter was installed in the septic tank outlet. Grouting of the extra outlet holes on the septic tank needed repair, and the contractor indicated that it would be taken care of. The purpose of our work was to evaluate the soils exposed in the building excavation for foundation support and in the septic field area for suitability of an infiltration disposal system. The findings of our work and recommendations are presented in this report. The work was done in accordance with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to you, dated June 22, 2001. The residence will be will be located on the site as shown on Fig. 1, and be a two story wood -frame structure over a walk -out basement level. Ground floor will be slab -on - grade. The building has been designed to be supported on spread footings assuming an allowable soil bearing pressure of 1500 psf. An on-site septic disposal system is planned down slope of the residence. At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation was essentially complete and had been cut in one level up to about 7 feet below the adjacent ground surface that daylighted to the southeast. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted of relatively dense, silty sand and gravel with cobbles and boulders. The results of a gradation analysis performed on a sample of the sand and gravel with cobble soils (minus 5 inch fraction) obtained from the site are presented on Fig.3. No free water was encountered in the excavation and the soils were slightly moist. Matt Maun July 5, 2001 Page 2 Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural granular soil designed for an allowable bearing pressure of 1500 psf should be adequate for support of the proposed residence. The exposed soils may be compressible when wetted under load and there could be some post -construction settlement of the foundation if the bearing soils become wet. Footings should be a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous walls and 2 feet for columns. Loose and disturbed soils in footing areas should be removed and the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed natural soils. Exterior footings should be provided with adequate soil cover above their bearing elevations for frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 12 feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining structures should also be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of at least 45 pcf for on-site soil, excluding topsoil and oversized rocks, as backfill. A perimeter foundation drain should be provided to prevent temporary buildup of hydrostatic pressure behind the walls and prevent wetting of the lower level. Structural fill placed within floor slab areas can consist of the on-site sand and gravel soils compacted to at least 95 % of standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. Backfill placed around the structure should be compacted and the surface graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of the building. Percolation tests were conducted on June 26, 2001 to evaluate the feasibility of an infiltration septic disposal system at the site. One profile pit and three percolation holes had been dug at the locations shown on Fig. 1. The test holes (nominal 12 inch diameter by 12 inch deep) had been hand dug at the bottom of shallow backhoe pits and soaked with water by the client one day prior to testing. The soils exposed in the percolation holes are similar to those exposed in the Profile Pit shown on Fig. 2 and consist of silty sand and gravel with cobbles and boulders. The pit did not encounter free water. The percolation test results are presented in Table I and indicate percolation between about 23 and 60 minutes per inch. Based on the subsurface conditions encountered and the percolation test results, the tested area should be suitable for a conventional infiltration septic disposal system. H -P GEOTECH Matt Maun July 5, 2001 Page 3 The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface exploration to evaluate the subsurface conditions within the loaded depth of foundation influence. This study is based on the assumption that soils beneath the footings have equal or better support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater than indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface conditions. In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter. The proposed development calls for the construction of a single-family residence. The entire site is situated on approximately 5.7 acres. See the enclosed Vicinity Map for site location. OFF-SITE BASINS The property exists along a steep hillside with slopes ranging from 15%-50T%. Off-site stormwater flows are concentrated into a historic debris flow channel that traverses through the center of the building envelope. The off-site basin extends 4300 - feet west of the building envelope, rises approximately 2200 -feet above the site and contains approximately 32.7 acres. The site is located well above Avalanche creek and the Crystal River floodplains. HYDROLOGY The hydrologic methods for this study are outlined in the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) publication "Procedures for Determining Peak Flows in Colorado" (1980) and the computer program AutoCAD Hydrology SCS TR -55 Tabular Method. Peak on-site flows in this area will be primarily rainfall derived. Therefore, the storm drainage system should be more than adequate to handle on-site spring snow�melt runoff. DRAINAGE PLAN The drainage basin for this study was taken as surveyed building site. The existing vegetation consists of oak brush with 40% coverage. The proposed development will consist of a 12' wide gravel drive leading to a single-family residence with attached garage. All stormwater runoff from the proposed parking area and driveway will be captured by a roadside ditch and gravity flow to the historic debris flow channel leads to the Crystal River. Roof, foundation and wall drains will also be directed into the historic channel. A 31 -inch high earthen berm will be constructed behind the proposed residence to deflect off-site debris flow away from the residence and into the historic channel. Historic, proposed and off-site debris flow volumes were found using the SCS TR -55 Tabular Method for the 100 -year, 24-hour storm. The general flow patterns are shown on the enclosed Grading, Drainage and Erosion Control Plan, along with the location of the proposed berm and historic channel. Erosion control details are also included in this report. Overlot grading shall ensure that drainage is directed away from proposed structure in all directions. -1- EROSION CONTROL Erosion control measures should be followed during construction to insure that the Crystal River and the adjacent sites are not impacted from sedimentation. These measures will include hay bales and good construction management practices. SUMMARY The proposed development will not significantly affect the existing drainage or debris flow patterns.
