Dear Melody and Bob, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolation testing to design a septic system for the proposed residence. We conducted this study according to Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations Individual Sewage Disposal Systems on Monday, July 12, 1993. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered. Please furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at your earliest convenience in order to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. Proposed Construction: The planned residence is a three bedroom, two and one-half bathroom house. There is an attached office and a future caretaker unit proposed as well. The property is to be served by an individual well. The lot is approximately 2 acres in size. Site Conditions: The site is a lot in the Crystal River Valley to the East of the highway, river, and old railroad grade. The building site is approximately 100 feet above and 300 feet from the Crystal River. The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field, slopes gently to the West at a 5% grade. It is an open meadow with several clumps of cottonwood and aspen trees. Subsurface Conditions: A soil profile pit, within 10 feet of the proposed absorption area, was excavated while we were there on June 22, 1993. The excavation revealed that no groundwater or bedrock was present within eight and one-half feet of the surface of the ground. In general, the subsoil consisted of a reddish silty loam with numerous small bolcky cobbles and flagstone fragments, three inches to three feet in diameter. P.O. The test holes were excavated with a backhoe to a depth of two to three feet and completed by hand. Preparatory to the test, the sidewalls were scrapped, and three inches of gravel was placed in each test hole. Percolation Testing: Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption trench area North of the residence. This testing was performed in three of the shallow holes excavated to a depth of between thirty-two and thirty-eight inches. The percolation holes were pre-soaked by adding water approximately every two hours for an eight hour period before beginning the percolation test. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the silty loam soils have an average percolation rate of 50 minutes per inch, a satisfactory percolation rate under Pitkin County criteria. This rate may have been slowed by the numerous rock fragments present in the sidewall of each of the test hole. The same circumstances explain the variability of the percolation rate between the test holes. Limitations: This report has been prepared in accordance with generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and may require additional evaluation if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of these situations as soon as possible so reevaluation of our recommendations can be done. Dear Melody and Bob, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., has performed a soils study and percolation testing for the design and construction of a septic system for the proposed residence at the subject site. This letter details our design recommendations. Proposed Construction and Building Site: The proposed residence is to be a three-bedroom, two and one half bathroom house. There is an attached office and a possible future caretaker unit proposed on the property as well. The residence is to be supplied water from a drilled well on the property. The lot does not present any significant limitations to the construction of an on-site sewage disposal system. The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the replacement absorption field, slopes rather gently to the West at a 5% grade. There are no natural drainages or irrigation ditches apparent in the area. Minimum Pitkin County Requirements: The percolation rates measured in the silty loam subsoils were measured at an average of 50 minutes per inch. The minimum Pitkin County requirements for this installation are based on a system flow of 450 gallons per day. This flow would require a septic tank of 1000 gallons minimum volume, and a minimum of 2220 square feet of standard absorption trench, and does not include an increased capacity for the caretaker unit. Under the Pitkin County regulations, a standard trench configuration is defined as follows: A standard absorption trench is an excavation less than three -feet (3') wide and containing a single 4 -inch (4") perforated distribution pipe in the center. A minimum of six -inches (6") of 1/2 inch to 2 1/2 inch diameter gravel is placed under the distribution pipe. A sufficient amount of additional gravel is placed around and over the distribution pipe and to bed and cover the pipe with a minimum of two inches (2") of gravel. A minimum of two trenches is required by code for any septic field trench installation. P.O. Box 6961 Snowmass Village, CO. 81615 Office (303) 923.3289 Home (303) 923.2766 Bob and Melody Durham Individual Sewage System Design July 21, 1993 Recommended On-site Wastewater Disposal Design: You have indicated a preference for the use of a separate gray water system for the laundry and for the installation of toilet fixtures flushing with only 1.6 gallons. A 25% reduction in leach field size is permitted for the use of low water use toilets, flushing on 1.6 gallons or less. Displacing the wastewater from the laundry into a separate gray water system reduces the primary septic field size an additional 26%. Further, we would recommend the dosing siphon to be incorporated into the system between the tank and the absorption field. This unit will provide a more even distribution of the effluent flow to the trenches, and permit an intermittent loading and resting cycle within the system. An additional 20% reduction in absorption trench area is permitted for a dosed system. It is advisable to use a large distribution box to equalize the flow to each of the four trenches, and yet accommodate the surge of water discharged from the dosing siphon. The distribution box is placed between the dosing siphon and the leaching chamber trenches and connected to each with a piece of solid PVC pipe. The suggested design incorporates the three alternatives listed above. The suggested systems, therefore, would consist of a blackwater system and separate gray water system for the laundry. The blackwater system primary treatment tank should be increased in volume to a 1250 gallon septic tank, in order to accommodate and provide sufficient detention time for any increase in flow from the possible caretaker unit. The absorption field for the blackwater system for the planned three-bedroom house would require 912 square feet of trench bottom area with all of the area reductions incorporated into the design. The system could then consist of four trenches, each 76 feet long. It is advisable to excavate these trenches as shallow as possible, to a depth of no more than three feet. An additional 100 foot trench could be added to the leach field at a later date, when the caretaker unit is constructed. The gray water system recommended for the laundry would consist of a 1000 gallon septic tank and 255 square feet of absorption trench. Two standard trenches, three feet wide and 43 feet long, would provide the required area for this portion of the wastewater system. Although located in a gently sloping area, we advise that the trench excavations be placed on the contour of the hill and be run perpendicular to the direction of the slope. Dear Melody and Bob, As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., has performed another soils study and percolation test to modify the design of a septic system for the residence under construction. This was necessitated since the owners of the fifty foot strip along the old railroad grade were not willing to grant an easement to construct the septic system in an area where gravity flow was possible. In addition, by moving to the South of the house and off a small ridge, the soil in the area of the relocated absorption field was less rocky and the topsoil was developed to a greater depth. We conducted this study according to Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations Individual Sewage Disposal Systems on November 30, 1994. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions encountered at the new septic system area location. We will furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department to modify the permit conditions and requirements on this individual sewage system. Proposed Construction: The plan for the residence is now a two bedroom, two and one-half bathroom house. There is an attached office and an additional studio caretaker unit as well. The property is to be served by an individual well already drilled on the property. The lot is approximately 2 acres in size. Site Conditions: The site is a lot in the Crystal River Valley to the East of the highway, river, and the old railroad grade. The building site is approximately 100 feet above and 300 feet from the Crystal River. The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of the absorption field, slopes gently to the West at a 5% grade. Most of the site is an open meadow with several clumps of cottonwood and aspen trees. P.O. The excavation revealed that no groundwater or bedrock was present within eight and one-half feet of the surface of the ground. The soil in the area proposed for the relocation of the absorption field consisted of a dark sandy loam. Deeper the subsoil consisted of a reddish silty loam with numerous small blocky cobbles and flagstone fragments, three inches to three feet in diameter. The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on Figure 1. The test holes were excavated with a backhoe to a depth of two feet and completed by hand. Preparatory to the test, the sidewalls were scrapped, and three inches of gravel were placed in each test hole. Percolation Testing: Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption trench area South of the residence. This testing was performed in three of the shallow holes excavated to a depth of between thirty - and thirty-two inches. The percolation holes were pre-soaked by adding water eight hours before beginning the percolation test. The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I. These results indicate the sandy loam soils have an average percolation rate of six to seven minutes per inch, a satisfactory percolation rate under Pitkin County criteria. This rate is probably more indicative of the soil in the area, not having been slowed by the numerous rock fragments present in the sidewall of each of the test holes as was the case in a previous percolation test to the North of the residence. Minimum Pitidn County Requirements: The percolation rate of the soils were measured at an average of 6 to 7 minutes per inch at depth from 2 1/2 to 3 feet in the new absorption area location. The minimum Pitkin County requirements for the installation are based on an eventual sewage flow to the absorption area of 450 gallons per day from the two units in the house. This flow would require a septic tank of 1000 gallons minimum volume, and a minimum of 500 square feet of standard absorption trench, defined as follows: A standard absorption trench is an excavation less than three -feet (3') wide and containing Durham Residence Soils Revaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System Design December 12, 1994 Page 3 a single 4 -inch (4") perforated distribution pipe in the center. A minimum of six -inches (6") of 1/2 inch to 2 1/2 inch diameter gravel is placed under the distribution pipe. A sufficient amount of additional gravel is placed around and over the distribution pipe and to bed and cover the pipe with a minimum of two inches (2") of gravel. A minimum of two trenches is required for any absorption trench installation. Recommended On-site_ Wastewater Disposal Designs: Because of the necessity for shallow seepage trench installations in the soil material exhibiting the best percolation rates and the location on the South portion of the property above the lower level of the house, it appears that a sewage effluent ejector and pumping chamber will be needed to properly connect the lower level plumbing. We recommend that a 1250 gallon septic tank be installed close to the foundation to receive gravity flows of wastewater from the residence. An effluent filter like the Zabel A-100 unit (brochure attached) should be fitted on the effluent line of the septic tank to minimize the discharge of suspended solids, grease and organic material to the absorption systems. This will benefit the system operations by controlling the effects of surge loadings of wastewater from the laundry much more effectively than the standard outlet tee. The location of the septic tank below the absorption area will also require that a 1000 gallon pumping chamber and pump system be installed to lift the septic tank effluent to the seepage area located above the level of the caretaker unit floor. A pump sized to deliver 30 gallons per minute against 10 feet of head should be sufficient to achieve equal distribution and lift to a surge tank and the absorption trench area. We also believe that, in general, the minimum component set -back distances on the site and the long trucking distance to obtain gravel, make'the use of gravel -less systems more attractive and economical. We would suggest that you plan to use this method for construction of the sewage systems. Use of "Infiltrator" leaching chambers permits a 50% reduction in standard absorption trench area under County regulations. This reduction is based on manufacturer's claims and on an approval of such a reduction by the Colorado Department of Health, Water Quality Control Division. Therefore, the suggested design incorporates the alternative listed above. We recommend that this septic system absorption area consist of at least two separate seepage trenches placed on contour with dimensions of three feet by fifty feet. A total of sixteen sections of "Infiltrator" is required to construct the system and can easily be placed in the two proposed trench excavations. It is required that the trenches be excavated as shallow as possible, but to a Durham Residence Soils Revaluation and Percolation Test for Individual Sewage System Design December 12, 1994 Page 4 depth of at least two feet below existing grade on the downhill edge. The trenches should be spaced six to ten feet apart. The bottom of the trenches must be level. It is advisable to use a small surge tank to receive flow from the pump. The pumped flow can then be dampened and flow by gravity to feed the trench system. The flow can be equalized and split to the two trenches with the Zabel Z-200 Flow Divider (brochure attached). Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site may not have been evident at the time of this investigation. Additional evaluation may be required if further excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This office should be advised of these situations as soon as possible so reevaluation of our recommendations can be done. Further, if the use of shallow absorption systems is not considered practical, we should be notified to evaluate the effect of the changes on the proposed sewage disposal systems. If modifications to these designs are made by the governing Health Department, we should also be notified so that we may reevaluate the impact of the changes on the suggested designs.
