Box 56 Arvonia, VA 23004 Subject: Subsurface Investigation and Repair OWS Design, Existing Jeffrey Residence 15569 Highway 133 Pitkin County, Colorado Job No. 14645W Ms. Jeffrey, As requested, we have investigated subsurface conditions and designed a repair onsite wastewater system (OWS) for the existing residence. The subsurface investigation was performed on September 10, 2003. SITE CONDITIONS The property is in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has a 10% slope to the east and a thick cover of native grasses with a moderate cover of evergreen and aspen trees. The site is supplied water by an onsite well, located 100 feet to the northwest of the proposed drain field. A well exists on the neighboring lot, 100+ feet to the northeast of the drain field. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION A two-bedroom residence with an area less than 2000 square feet (SF) and a 1000 -gallon plastic septic tank exist at the locations presented on Figure 1. The OWS was sized based on 2 bedrooms and 300 gallons per day (CPD) using Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (PCEHD) loading of 75 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 525 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and garbage grinders. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS A subsurface investigation was performed by digging a yofile pit at the location indicated on Figure 2. Subsurface materials in the profile pit consisted of of topsoil, underlain by clayey sand with gravel and cobbles to the maximum depth explored of 14 feet o ground water was encountered. A gradation analysis was performed on a sample taken from' a est pit. Results of the gradation analysis classify soil in the test pit as a sandy loam, which has an application rate of 0.72 gallons per square foot per day (gal/SF/day), according to PCEHD ISDS regulations. Gradation analysis results are included as Figure 4. RECONMENDATIONS The repair OWS design includes a septic tank and drywell drain field for the site. The OWS design is based on a peak sewage load of 525 GPD and an application rate of 0.72 gal/SF/day. We understand the existing septic tank is plastic and has a capacity of 1000 gallons. The tank should maintain a liquid capacity of 70% or should be backfilled with structural material to minimize the risk of collapse. The existing septic tank may 03d3 DENVER 4501 Wadsworth Boulevard Wheat Ridge, CO 80033 www.geo-church.com 303.463.9317 Fax: 303.463.9321 Toll Free -1.877.248.3123 Repair OWS Design Job No. 14645W, 9/23/03 Page 2 be used in the OWS installation with the addition of an effluent filter. The installation must include a 12 -foot wide by 20 -foot long by 8-f6ot deep dry well. The OWS must be constructed similar to Figures 1 - 3. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the field. A native seed mix should be sown of the drain field to revegetate the surface. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the drywell. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbi- odegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywefl should'be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LIMITATIONS The OWS should be installed by a contractor who is experienced in OWS installations. Our investigation, layout, design and. recommendations are based on data submitted. if subsurface conditions different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the OWS. if the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the 1SDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the 1SDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of the PCEHD 1SDS regulations and requirements. If there are questions, or we can be of further service, please call. Sincerely, ft PPOs.
