Septic permit approved per compliance with the engineer design and specifications stamped 1/15/01. Any
changes must be approved by this department and the design engineer prior to them being made.
Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the Pitkin
County ISDS regulations. The existing system must be abandoned properly.
The design is for a 1500 gallon two-compartment concrete tank, distribution box with a baffle, and an infiltrator bed
6 units wide by 9 units long, 54 units total.
This department does not endorse any brand of products. The engineer must do a final inspection of the
installation and submit an as -built letter to this department. This department must also be called for an inspection

The fee for a ISDS application is $330 for a permit that takes 6 hours or less for the department to approve. If approval takes
lonaer than 6 hours, a rate of $55 per hour will he charged The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time
of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit; second, before
final approval of the ISDS permit.

that any such features not shown on attached site map are not present. Issuance of the permit does not imply the approval of
any other permit required for construction pursuant to Pitkin County codes. No construction may be undertaken until all

The Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department, Pitkin County and employees of these agencies will be held harmless

We have carried out final inspections on October 3`d and 21" to confirm that
everything is in place.
Accordingly, we are transmitting the attached two -sheet set of As -Built plans for
the ISDS systems at this residence, bearing my stamp and seal and the date of
November 23, 2003. This letter is intended to serve as our certification that all
components and systems were installed in substantial compliance with our
design plans, as modified in the field, Pitkin County Environmental Health
Regulations, and the manufacturers specifications.
The only exceptions we are aware of is that the disturbed areas have not been
reseeded and mulched, and at the time of our last visit, the Smartfilter® alarm
had not been fully wired in. Neither of these elements will adversely affect the
operation of the system in the short term, though both need to be completed in
order to a) protect the surface from erosion and b) to help the owners keep the
filter clean.
Assuming that you have no comments or requests for revisions or modifications
to these As -Built plans, please send a copy of the final permit to both this office,
and to Edie Engstrom, 800 Dorias Drive, Wild Rose Ranch, Redstone,
Colorado 81623.

Dear Fdie-
Regarding the existing septic tank, as I said over the phone recently, the condition of
the septic tank appears to be excellent. At the time of my inspection on Tuesday,
Play 13�', the tank had been recently pumped. There was approximately an inch of
liquid in both compartments. I saw no sign of any leaks or significant dam -age.
Both the inlet and outlet pipes are 4 -inch ductile iron pipe. This pipe is generally
very strong, but can corrode with exposure to wastes and chelmicals. There was
evidence of minor corrosion in the outlet pipe, I could not see the inlet pipe where it
entered the septic tank, but the outside appeared to be in good condition.
Regardless, I recom�tmend replacing these pipes with PVC pipes meeting the
ASTM standard specification D-3034, which would be SDR 35 PVC. I also did
not see any cleanout on the sewer line from the building to the septic tan -k_; I strongly
recommend that a cleanout be installed.
There are four access and inspection openings in the tank. The first is a rectangular
opening approximately 1 -foot wide by 1.35 -feet long (all dimensions are to the
outside of the opetungs, the openings are narrower at their bottom to keep the lids
from dropping into the tanks at the ituet end. The second is a 1.65 -foot diameter
round opening roughly in the middle of the first compartment. The third is another
rectangular opening similar to the inlet opening in size, located directly over the
separation wall between the first and second compartments, and providing access to
both the separation wall and the concrete baffle, which adjoins it. The fourth
opening is another rectangular opening, smaller than the first two, with a width of
0.65 -feet and a length of 1 -foot, over the outlet end, and the concrete box baffle at
that location.
The inlet end of the tank has a concrete baffle extending across the full width of the
tank, and extending 1.96 -feet below the inside top of the tank. There is a small gap
at the top of the inlet baffle, the width of the access cover (0.8 -feet), and
approximately three -inches high.
The baffle between the first and second compartments extends 2.5 -feet below the
inside top of the tank. The baffle is formed of a concrete box with dimensions
approximately the same as the middle access hatch. As on the inlet baffle, there is a
small gap at the top of the intermediate baffle approximately three -inches high.

The outlet baffle is a roughly square box with (plan view) dimensions of the access
hatch, and extending 2.5 -feet below the inside top of the tank. The cover over the
outlet access/inspection hatch needs to be replaced, as it has a cracked corner.
The broken corner will lead to dirt and debris entering the second compartment of
the septic tank. The tank sits relatively level. The outlet is approximately four -inches
lower than the inlet, which is satisfactory. The volume of the first compartment is
approximately 795 gallons, and that of the second is approximately 331 gallons, so
the ratio between these is satisfactory. The relatively minor "corrosion" of the
concrete around the outlet baffle is not evident anywhere else that I could see. I do
not believe that the minor spalling visible there will have any significant effect on the
performance of the system, though it may lead to an earlier failure of the tank if not
dealt with soon.
I recommend that when the work is being done on the system, a competent concrete
contractor should be contacted to give some recommendations on how to prevent
any further spalling of the concrete in that location, which should keep the tank in
good shape for some time to come. There are a number of materials on the market,
which will seal off the area of damage and help to prevent, or at least slow, the
progress of spalling.
I made measurements of the actual inside dimensions of the tank, and the real
internal volume available for use is approximately 1,126 gallons. This is 124
gallons less than the stated and printed volume of the tank (1,250 gallons). I suspect
that the stated volume does not include the volume lost to the internal separation wall
or to the concrete baffles. The minimum volume required according to the permit is
1,313 gallons, so an additional volume of 187 gallons (minimum) is required to
comply with Pitkin County requirements. In addition, Pitkin County requires the
installation of a filter on the outlet of the tank. There are some filters available,
which can be inserted into the end of the tank, inside the square concrete outlet
baffle, which might work with the existing tank, but I do not recommend their use in
this case.
In order to increase the available volume of the septic tank, I recommend that
you purchase the smallest available supplemental tank that will satisfy the
requirement of having at least 187 gallons of internal volume, and a means of
placing the required filter. There are a number of inlet basins, meter pits, sand
traps, etc. that will satisfy these requirements, but the simplest which I have
found would be a 36 -inch diameter, one -Piece Section Sand Trap, 66 -inches
h„gh as manufactured by Copeland Concrete. You are not going to be using this
as a sand trap, clearly, but a supplemental tank for the additional volume that
you need, and as a place to site the effluent filter. The "sand trap” would be
placed at the outlet end of the tank, as close as you could reasonably locate it.
This item will provide an additional 220 gallons of volume. You will also need
a 24. -inch concrete cover for the Sand Trap, have Copeland tell you which cover
fits best. The outlet filter that I recommend using is the Zabel model Ai00-
8X18-VCF with a SmartFilter Alarm. This Zabel filter has a flow capacity of
1,200 gallons per day, and the SmartFilter Alarm will warn you if the filter

becomes plugged. As a matter of policy, Gamba & Associates, Inc. (G&A)
does not recommend using effluent filters without an alarm system.
I am attaching "cut -sheets" from Copeland Concrete (2 sheets) for the sand trap, and
Zabel Filter and SmartFilter Alarm (3 sheets) for the filter which I am
recommending. Circled items are what I am recommending be purchased.
I am not requiring that these manufacturers be used, there are certainly other
manufacturers out there, and some doubtless provide equivalent items. I have not
made any significant effort to research other available sources for the tank or the
filter, these manufacturers are the ones we most commonly use, and are the most
familiar to us. Please feel free to contact other companies and manufacturers if you
wish. The parameters for the volume of the supplemental tank (187 gallons
minimum) and the filter (1,050 gallons/day minimum and 1/16 -inch filtration)
should be strictly adhered to.

The following is the soil information for your proposed Residence addition, located on Tract B
of the Wild Rose Ranch, Pitkin, Colorado.
A soil profile 8'— 9" total depth, was excavated within the proposed absorption area. The
excavation revealed no ground water to the depth of the profile hole.
Soil Classification of the profile hole is as follows:

investigations of the proposed site. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of the

MINIMUM REQUIRED SEPTIC TANK SIZE, FOR 30 hours (1.25 days) DETENTION =
MAXIMUM DAILY FLOW x 1.25 days = 1,050 gpd x 1.25 days = 1,313 gallons.
EXISTING TANK HAD A NOMINAL VOLUME OF 1,250 gal., BUT PHYSICAL
MEASUREMENTS INDICATED AN ACTUAL USEABLE VOLUME OF 1,126.7 gal.
WITH APPROVAL OF PITKIN COUNTY, THE EXISTING TANK WAS SUPPLEMENTED BY THE
ADDITION OF A 3 ft. DIA. ONE—PIECE FILTER CHAMBER, WITH THE DIMENSIONS
SHOWN IN THE DETAILS. THIS PROVIDED AN ADDITIONAL VOLUME OF 222 gal.,
GIVING A TOTAL OF 1,348.7 gal., AND A SITE TO LOCATE THE EFFLUENT FILTER.
THE ABSORPTION AREA (A) FOR A NORMAL GRAVEL TYPE LEACH FIELD IS
CALCULATED USING THE FOLLOWING FORMULA:

A = (1,050) x 32 = 1,187.93 sq. ft

According to the Pitkin County Environmental Department, for the design of a Leach
Field incorporating grovelless chamber units (Infiltrator units) in a bed configuration, a
reduction of the required absorption area can be a maximum of 30% of the above
design area. For this design we will use a 30% reduction.
THEREFORE, the required area for the Leach field is
(0.7) x (1,187.93 s.f.) = 831 s.f.
THEREFORE:
The number of Infiltrator units required is = (831 s.f.)/(15.5 s.f./unit) = 54 units
Bed configuration WAS DESIGNED as 6 rows wide by 9 units long, however, site
restraints required a re—configuration of the bed. As—Built in the field, the bed
consists of 6 rows of 7 units in length, (42 units) and 2 rows of 6 units in length,
(12 units), for a total of 54 units.
All Minimum Horizontal Setback Distances shall conform to Pitkin County, Individual
Sewage Disposal regulations.
All components of the septic system shall be installed according to the Pitkin County
regulations, Colorado Department of Health and according to manufacturer
specifications.
