proposed dwelling located in the Redstone Ranch Acres area. I find no problem
with the design of the system.
As to your request for a holding tank, it is the County polio r -not to
allow a holding tank for sewage purposes. Your request is therefore denied.

The following report and disposal system design have been
prepared in accordance with the requirements of the Pitkin
County Environmental Health Department and the Pitkin County
Individual Sewage Regulations, effective March 25, 1974.
In addition, numerous conversations have been held with
Mr. Jim Roark, County Sanitarian, concerning his input into
the system.
Background
A two bedroom home is to be constructed on an 11 1/2 acre
parcel of land located adjacent to the Crystal River.approximate-
ly 1 1/2 miles South of Redstone, Colorado. A soil profile
inspection hole and test pits for infiltration tests had been
dug on the site and were viewed by Mr. Bob Nelson, assistant
County Sanitarian. Mr. Nelson observed a shallow ground water
table and notified you that it would be necessary to have the
disposal system for the site designed by a registered professional
engineer. Pursuant to his notification, you contacted our office
and entered into a contract dated October 20, 1975 for the design
of the necessary facilities.
Perculation Tests
On October 23, 1975, Mr. James Pascal of this office conducted
perculation tests on three existing holes. In conformance with
the County regulations, the holes were pre wetted on the previous
day. All three holes exhibited infiltration rates exceeding the
County requirements. One hole infiltrated water so rapidly that
it was impossible to get the required ten minute infiltration
rate. The other two holes exhibited infiltration rates of two
minutes per inch and three minutes per inch.

Inspection Hole
The inspection hole was investigated by Mr. Dave Burnett
of this office and found to contain a permanent water table at
an elevation of four feet below the ground level on October 20,
1975. The upper few inches of the hole revealed a rich lomey
top soil. Below this level were layers Iof gravel, containing
various amounts of silt. Approximately two feet of material
above the ground water table was moist and might be located
in a seasonal high ground water table occurring during periods
of maximum runoff.
Selection of Treatment Method
Several treatment methods were investigated as being
practical for the site. These included the following: -
1) Sand filter with infiltration of effluent.
2) Installation of a controlled fill beneath a conven-
tional infiltration bed to assure that infiltration rates
matched county requirements.
3) Evapotranspiration bed design.
Based on concerns voiced by Jim Roark, a sealed evapotrans-
piration bed was selected for the site.
Consideration was given to both an aerated treatment
plant and a conventional septic tank system for the treatment
unit. The aerated treatment unit is normally,credited with
giving a better degree of treatment than a septic tank unit
and therefore can be used with smaller dispersal systems. The
reduction in size of the dispersal system can offset the larger
first cost and continuous maintenance costs of the aerated
system. However, Pitkin County does not give any allowance for
the use of aerated treatment units.
It is therefore our recommendation that a conventional
septic tank with a capacity of 750 gallons be coupled with an
evapotranspiration bed as the dispersal method.
Design of Evapotranspiration Bed '
A completely sealed evapotranspiration bed has been utilized
for this system. Calculations for the bed sizing together with.
details of its construction are indicated on the attached sheets.
An evapotranspiration rate of 0.15 gallons per square foot per day
has been utilized in the calculations. This rate is felt to be
a realistic annual average for the site based on elevation and
exposure to sunlight. The minimum area for the bed without the
use of automatic clothes washer -Is 3,000 square feet. If an

automatic clothes washer is included in the house, it will be
necessary to increase the bed size to 4,200 square feet. Recommended
dimensions for the bed are shown on the detail sheet.
You may wish to consider whether the additional size of the
evapotranspiration bed caused by the inclusion of an automatic
clothes washer in the home is justified. You may find ii more
desirable to install the basic 3,000 square foot bed at this time
and then to install a second bed with an area of 1,200 square feet
if and when a clothes washer is aided to the home. Also, if
garbage disposals are ever included in the home, an additional
600 square feet of bed should be provided. These additional areas
will be necessary if the bed is expected to operate satisfactorily
over a reasonable period of time.
Conclusions
The sewage disposal system called for in this report meets
the requirements of the Pitkin County Individual Sewage Regulations
and requirements verbally indicated by Mr. Jim Roark. The system
consists of a conventional septic tank with a volume of 750 gallons
together with an evapotransporation bed with an area of 3,000
square feet if no automatic clothes washer is utilized in the
home. The bed area will have to be increased to 4,200 square feet
if an automatic clothes washer is utilized.
In addition to those items specifically shown on the plans,
it will be necessary to meet all requirements of the Pitkin County
Individual Sewage Disposal Regulations. In particular, the septic
tank must be located 10 feet from any potable water supply line
and 10 feet from any dwelling or other occupied building. The
disposal field must be located 10 feet from any potable water
supply line, 15 feet from any dwelling or occupied building, 10
feet from any property line, and 25 feet from the river.
The Pitkin County Individual Sewage Disposal Regulations
require that the designing engineer inspect the comppeted installa-
tion and certify that it has been constructed in accordance with
the design as approved by the County Health Department. Please
contact us near the completion of the construction so that we may
inspect the facility as required by the regulations.
This report should be submitted to Mr. Jim Roark, County
Sanitarian, for his approval prior to commencing construction.
You should also indicate to Mr. Roark your intentions concerning
the inclusion of an automatic clothes washer in the home at this
time. Please contact us if Mr. Roark has any questions concerning
the system design or wishes to make changes to the design.
