As requested, we observed the installation of the onsite wastewater system (OWS) for the subject site on
July 3, 2002. The system was designed under our Job No. 13787W, dated August 24, 2001 and revised
April 5, 2002.
The system includes a 1500 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter
on the outlet and a drywell drain field. The dimensions of the drywell are 7 feet wide by 15 feet long by
12 feet deep for a total infiltrative area of 633 square feet. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1.
The components of the OWS were installed in conformance with our plans and specifications.

I have voided permit #02013 and will be reissuing a new permit based on calculations that take into
account a 3 bedroom home with greater than 2000 sq ft of living area.
Although the "bonus" room does come under the general guidelines of our "potential bedroom
definition", this department has determined that it is reasonable NOT to count this room as a bedroom.
A condition of approval will be that the Bonus room will not be used as a bedroom.
Thank you,
Carla

construction of the drywell to assure there is 4 feet of adequate soil beneath the drywell.

Subject: Subsurface Investigation and Revised OWS Design, Proposed Senn Residence
133 Chair Mountain Drive
Lot 35, Crystal River Park
Pitkin County, Colorado
Job No. 13787W
Mr. Senn,
As requested, we have investigated subsurface conditions and designed a revised onsite wastewater system
(OWS) for the proposed residence. The revisions are based on the inclusion of a "bonus" room into the
total square footage of the residence. The additional living area requires an increase in the average daily
flow calculations from our original report, dated August 24, 2001. Our original design should be discarded
to avoid confusion. The subsurface investigation was performed on August 22, 2001.
SITE CONDITIONS
The property is in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain
field area has an 11% slope to the east and a thick cover of native grasses and a moderate cover of aspen
trees. The site will be served by the local water district.
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
A three-bedroom residence with a living area of 2304 square feet (SF) is proposed as presented on Figure 1.
The OWS was sized based on 3 bedrooms and 600 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin Environ-
mental Health Department (APEHD) loading of 100 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading with a
peaking factor of 1.75 is 1050 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and garbage grinders.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
A subsurface investigation was performed by digging six percolation holes, 18 to 198 inches deep, and one
profile pit at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface materials in the profile pit consisted of six
inches of topsoil, underlain by silty sand with gravel to 14 feet, underlain by silty sand with gravel and
cobbles to the maximum depth explored of 16 feet. No ground water was encountered. Percolation tests
indicate percolation rates of 6 to 13 minutes per inch (MPI). The average percolation rate is 9 MPI.
Percolation data is presented in Table 1.
RECOMMENDATIONS
We have prepared an OWS design, which includes a septic tank and drywell for the site. The OWS design is
based on a peak sewage load of 1050 GPD and a percolation rate of 9 MPI. The installation must include

one 1500 -gallon, two-compartment, pre -cast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet and a
7 -foot wide by 15 -foot long by 12 -foot deep drywell. The OWS should be constructed similar to Figures 1
through 3.
Vehicle movement over the drywell area during construction should be kept at a minimum to minimize
compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the drywell should be scarified with a pick, shovel, or
backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of dispersal gravel.
The surface of the drywell should be seeded after installation of the field. A native seed mix should be sown
on top of the dryvell field to revegetate the surface. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a
growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of
and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the
septic tank should be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to
be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbi-
odegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized.
The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed
for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas
should not be introduced to the OWS.
T LMTTATIONS
An OWS design should be installed by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation,
layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably
different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on
the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to
evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon
completion of the OWS
All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements,
septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to
the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of
the APEHD ISDS regulations and requirements.
If there are questions o Awa mij/ f further service, please call. The project engineer is Tim Petz.
