The system includes a 1500 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet and a drywell drain field. The dimensions of the drywell measure 15 feet wide by 26 feet long by 12 feet deep for a total infiltrative area of 1374 square feet. An as -built drawing is included as Figure 1. Box 683 Carbondale, Colorado 81623 Subject: OWS Design, Proposed Clemente Residence Lot 20, Crystal River Park, Redstone Pitkin County, Colorado Job No. 13003W Mr. Clemente, As requested, we have designed an Onsite Wastewater System (OWS) for the proposed residence. Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. investigated subsurface conditions and performed a percolation test. Results of the HP Geotech investigations are presented in Appendix A and B. SITE CONDITIONS The property is located in a residential area in Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain field area has a 20% slope to the southeast, and has a thick cover of native grasses with a few scattered trees. There is a dry gulch on the southern border of the property. The residence will be served water by the local water district. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION The proposed residence will have three bedrooms and a living area between 2000 and 6000 square feet (SF). The OWS has been sized based on 3 bedrooms and 600 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department (APEHD) loading of 100 gallons per day per person. The sewage load- ing with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 1050 GPD. This loading includes a garbage grinder, dish washer, and washing machine. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS HP Geotech investigated subsurface conditions. Subsurface materials consisted of a 8 inches of topsoil; underlain by silty to clayey sand with gravel and scattered cobbles to the maximum depth explored of 17 feet where refusal was encountered. No ground water or bedrock was reported in the profile pit. Percola- tion test results indicate percolation rates ranged from 11 minutes per inch (MPI) to 53 MPI. The average percolation rate is 39 MPI. The reports prepared by HP Geotech are included as Appendix A and B. RECOMMENDATIONS We have prepared an OWS design consisting of a septic tank and drywell for the site. The OWS design is based on a peak sewage load of 1050 GPD and a percolation rate of 39 MPI. The installation must include one 1500 -gallon, two-compartment, pre -cast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet and a 15 -foot wide by 26 -foot long by 12 -foot deep dry well. Our office and the county must be contacted upon installation to verify soils beneath bottom of proposed drywell. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the drywell. A native seed mix available at seed stores should be used. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth of 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the field. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from a public sewer system. The owner must be aware of and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other non -biodegradable materials down the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. Water use must be monitored so toilets are not allowed to run when seals malfunction. To illustrate the point, it should be noted a running toilet would consume in excess of 1000 GPD if allowed to run. An excess 1000 -gallon loading will flood and irreparably harm the system. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LEVMATIONS An experienced OWS installation contractor should install this OWS design. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS. All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. Dear Mr. Clemente: As requested by Sherry Rubin, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. conducted percolation testing at the subject site to evaluate the feasibility of a septic drywell system, The results of our work are presented in this report. The work was done in general accordance with our agreement for probeasional services to you, dated May 24, 2400. The subsoil study for the proposed residence was not completed at this time. A deep profile pit had been excavated prior to our arrival at the location shown on Fig. 1. Percolation test holes had been dug at three levels within the profile pit and soaked one day prior to our testing. The soils exposed in the profile pit consisted of about 11/2 feet of topsoil overlying silty to clayey sand with gravel and scattered cobbles to the maximum profile pit depth of 13 feet_ A gradation analysis and Atterberg Iimits testing were performed on a sample obtained from the pit is shown on Fig. 2. Groundwater was not observed in the profile pit and the soils were slightly moist to moist_ Percolation tests were performed on May 25, 2000 by a representative of Hepworth- Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. The percolation test results are presented on Table I. The percolation test results indicate an infiltration rate of between I I and 53 minutes per inch with an average of 39 minutes per incb. We conductedthe investigation to evaluate the subsurface conditions at the site and provide foundation recommendations for the proposed single-family residence. Our report was prepared from data developed during our field exploration, laboratory testing, engineering analysis and our experience with similar conditions. This report includes a description of the subsurface conditions found in our exploratory borings, our opinions and recommendations for design criteria for recommended foundation and floor systems, and geotechnical and construction criteria for details influenced by the subsoils. The recommendations contained in the report were developed based on currently proposed building plans. If actual construction plans will differ significantly from the descriptions contained herein, we should be contacted to adjust our recommendations as necessary. A summary of our conclusions is presented below. SUMMARY OF CONCLUSIONS 1. Subsurface conditions found in our exploratory borings for the building (TH-1 and TH-2) consisted of 9 and 12 feet of silty to clayey sand with gravel and cobbles underlain by sandstone bedrock. Our exploratory boring near the planned drywell location (TH-3) encountered aboutil inches oftopsoii underlain by silty to clayey sand with gravel, cobbles and boulders. Practical auger refusal occurred on cobbles and boulders in TH-3 at depths of 11 and 17 feet. Free ground water was not found in our exploratory borings during drilling operations. 2, We recommend constructing the residence on footing foundations supported by the silty to clayey sand and sandstone bedrock. Design and construction criteria for footings are presented in the report. 3. We judge potential risk of differential movement will be low for slabs - on -grade construction supported by the native soils and bedrock at this site.
