For • • repair or upgrading of existing systems where the size of the lot prevents meeting these distances, the repaired facility may not be closer to water supply components ' than the existing facility. (1) Crossings from these distances may be permitted if the drinking_water or wastewater pipe is encased for at least ten (10) feet on each side of the crossing or place where components are closer than specified in the table. Pipe of Schedule 40 rating or better must be used, of sufficient diameter to easily slide over and completely encase the line. Ridged end caps of at least Schedule 40 rating must be glued or secured in a watertight fashion to the ends of the encasement pipe. There must be a hole of sufficient size to accommodate the pipe in the lowermost section of the ridged cap so that the conveyance pipe rests on the bottom of the encasement pipe. The area in which the pipe passes through the endcaps must be sealed with an approved underground sealant compatible with the piping used. The State only ever uses 75 gpd, however Pitco uses 100 gpd for a home between 2000-6000 sq.ft. Therefore if a home is over 2000 sq. ft. and has four bedrooms, the State would only require a 100 foot separation where Pitco would require 132 feet. In the Mechau case were there is a failed septic system, the old field is on a neighboring property and there is no easement, and the only location available is approx. 120 ft. from the well. We have decided that we will allow this system to be at this distance. Dear Mike, This company has conducted an inspection of the referenced property for the purpose of evaluating the existing on-site wastewater disposal system serving the original farmhouse dwelling constructed in the early 1900's. It was apparent that some sewage effluent was ponded on the lower portion of the property and that some of the clay file sewer line was broken in the exploratory excavation. The existing system is thought to have been shared, in part, with the adjoining property to the North and not located on this parcel. It may have been damaged when a sprinkler system was installed. As a result of these conditions and considering the regulatory requirements for slope and setbacks, it was decided a replacement system was necessary and that the steep hillside location should be avoided. As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd., performed a soils study and percolation tests for a replacement septic system for the structure within an area on the top bench and North of the residence. We conducted this study in accordance with Article 5 of the Pitkin County Individual- Sawaa Di osal System m R latio . We have based our recommendations othe subsurface conditions encountered. We will furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department as soon aspossible in order for you to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system. We understand that you have already filed a permit application and paid the $150 fee. Existing Construction and Site Conditions: The house was originally constructed as part of the Osgood Farm_ The residence is a two-story house with four -bedrooms and tum baths and an unfinished walkout basement. It is estimated that the total living area for the house is approximately 1960 square feet. Water to the residence is supplied from a well drilled on the South side of the property, 120 feet away from the structure. The well is located a sufficient distance from obvious sources of contamination, such as the existing and proposed septic system locations. As we understand, there is another abandoned water system shown on the site plan East of the house. This original raw water system to the Osgood Farm from Klein Creek is still in place and shown on the site plan. However, this line is no longer P.O. October 16, 1996 Page 2 Township 10 South, believed to be used for drinking water by any residences in the area. It may still be connected as a back-up supply to a few of the downstream houses. The residential property is on a tract of approximately .66 acres. Most of the lot consists of a targe, open area sloping gently toward the West. The proposed absorption area is covered with the lawn, and there are some large spruce, pine and aspen around the building. The ground surface of most of the property appears natural and slopes to the West at a 5% grade, although the house is built into a steeper hill. There is a portion of the tract sloping to the West at a 40% grade below the house. Subsljace Conditigns: A soil profile was excavated within the proposed absorption area. This excavation revealed that no standing groundwater was present within eight feet of the surface of the ground. Bedrock was not encountered to a depth of eight feet. The soils consisted of an eighteen inch layer of dark gray silty topsoil, and lighter reddish tan layer of cobble and sandy loam to the depth of profile excavation at 8 feet. The layers of soil showed no tendency to compact under the pressure of excavation equipment or to swell when wet. Numerous loose rocks and boulders, ranging from three inches to three feet in diameter, were encountered within the profile below a depth of four feet. Per lation Testing: The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard percolation test procedures at the approximate locations shown on Figure 1. Three inches of gravel were placed in the bottom of each hole before presoaking began to protect the bottom of the hand dug test holes from scouring when the water was added. This testing was performed in the five shallow holes hand dug to a depth of approximately thirty to thirty- four inches. The percolation holes were pre-soaked before our testing measurements by adding five gallons of water the evening before and, again, every two hours prior to beginning the percolation test measurements. These results indicate the soils have an average percolation rate of 15 minutes per inch, a satisfactory percolation rate under Pitkin County criteria. Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soil across the site may not have been evident during our investigations, and may require additional evaluation. If further excavation reveals conditions different from those described, this office should be advised of the situation as soon as possible, so we may reevaluate our recommendations.
