The permit and record drawing was provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (Parcel ID # 2729-293-03-020). The subject OWTS consists of one 1250 -gallon septic tank, followed by a 500 -gallon single compartment septic tank, followed by a 500 -gallon single compartment pump chamber with a pump. The absorption field consists of a sand mound, with a minimum of 1313 square feet of sand filter material. The exact dimensions are not clear from the design drawing; however, the mounded portion of the field was evident during the site visit. The first septic tank in the series is a 1250 -gallon concrete tank. Both inlet and outlet tees were present. The accumulation of sludge and scum in this tank warrants pumping. The second tank in the series is a 500 -gallon tank. Tees must be installed on both the inlet and outlet side of this tank. Accumulation of sludge and scum in this tank also warrants pumping. The third tank in the series is the pump chamber. The tank does not need to be pumped. The pump was found to be functional, as well as the alarm. The alarm panel is located inside the mechanical room of the house. It was on "silence" and unplugged. This the sound was turned on and panel plugged back in at the time of the inspection. The absorption area showed no signs of saturation, and had no indication of failure. One observation ports was present. The inside of the port was dry. This evaluation is not a guarantee of future system performance. This inspection is good for one year. Repairs Necessary to obtain an OWTS Use Permit: • 1250 -gallon and first 500 -gallon tanks must be pumped. • Tees must be installed on both inlet and outlet pipes of the 500 -gallon tank near fence. Recommendations: • Install an effluent filter on the outlet tee of the 1250 -gallon tank. All of the components of the system had been installed, but no backfilling had taken place. Our observation was hampered by several inches of snow, but it appeared that the installation of the system was in conformance with the intent of the design. We understand that you have discussed finalizing the construction in the spring with Duane Piffer. Thus, final grading, revegetation, and placement of riprap would be completed, as weather allows, in the spring. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact us.
