Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual
Sewage System Design for a Parcel of Land in Tract 52, Section 14,
Township 10 South, Range 86 West of the 6th P.M., numbered as 0213
Divide Road, Snowmass Village, CO 81615
Dear Bill,
As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd.,
performed a soils study and percolation tests to design a septic
system for the proposed residence. We conducted this study in
accordance with Section 4-5 of Pitkin County Regulations on
Individual Sewage Disposal Systems on Wednesday, May 19, 1993. We
have based our recommendations on the subsurface conditions
encountered. Please furnish this letter to the Aspen/Pitkin
Environmental Health Department at your earliest convenience to
obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage system.
Proposed Construction:
The residence is a one bedroom, one bathroom, two-story log house.
The property is served by a spring and is approximately 32 acres in
size.
Site Conditions:
The site is a lot in Snowmass Creek Valley several hundred feet
above and about 1/4 mile from Snowmass Creek.
The ground surface, which appears natural in the proposed area of
the absorption field, slopes steeply to the West at about a 35%
grade. There are some abandoned irrigation ditches in the area.
The lower meadow, where the proposed absorption field is to be
located in not as steep, and slopes gently to the Northwest
at a 15% grade.
Subsurface Conditions:
A soil profile pit, within 80 feet of the proposed absorption area,
was excavated to a depth of seven feet. The excavation encountered
no groundwater. Bedrock was not present within eight feet of the
surface of the ground. There were some loose shale fragments
intermixed with the soil matrix from the surface down.
The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard

percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on
Figure 1. The test holes were excavated prior to our arrival at
the site. The subsoil in which the percolation testing was run,
consisted of silty clay loams to a depth of eighty-seven inches.
These grey silty clay loams are well consolidated, and showed
little tendency to swell.
Percolation Testing:
Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption trench
area south of the building. Three shallow holes were hand dug to
a depth of twenty-seven to thirty-three inches. The percolation
holes had been excavated earlier and pre-soaked the evening before
our testing. Water was added again approximately six hours before
beginning the percolation test. There was approximately three
inches of water remaining in one of the percolation test holes when
we arrived at the site about 6:00 p.m.
The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I.
These results indicate the silty clay loam soils have an average
percolation rate of 32 minutes per inch and are acceptable for a
conventional infiltration design for the on-site sewage system.
Limitations: This report has been prepared in accordance with
generally accepted practices in this area for use for sewage
disposal design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations
submitted in this report are based upon data obtained from our site
visits at the location indicated. There is some possibility that
the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across
the site may not have been evident at the time of this
investigation, and may need additional evaluation if further
excavation reveals conditions different from those described. This
office should be advised of any unusual situations as soon as
possible so we may reevaluate our recommendations.
If you have questions or if we may be of further assistance, please
call the office.
Sincerely,
Robert F. Nelson
President
