Box 1185 Aspen CO 81612-1185 Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed Residence, Lot El, Thistle Lane, East Owl Creek Subdivision, Pitkin County, Colorado. Job No. 4 334 91 Dear Mr. Holloway: As requested, Chen -Northern, Inc., observed the excavation at the subject site on June 26, 1991 to evaluate the soils exposed for foundation support. The findings of our work and recommendations for the foundation design are presented in this report. The work was done in accordance with our agreement for geotechnical engineering services to Roy Holloway, dated June 26, 1991. The proposed residence is a two-story wood frame structure with a structural ground level floor over crawl space. There will also be a detached garage with slab -on -grade floor. The proposed foundation is concrete footings and walls. At the time- of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation for the residence had been cut in one level from 3 1/2 to 5 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The garage area had not been excavated. The soils exposed in the bottom of the excavation consisted of very moist to wet silty clay. There was no free water at footing excavation grade but free water appears to be at a depth of about 1 foot at the southwest corner where the subgrade is soft. Results of swell - consolidation testing performed on samples of the clay taken from the site are shown on Fig. 1. The soils are law density and moderately to highly coupressible based on the test results. Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed construction, the proposed residence can be founded with spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural soil designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 500 psf. Some differential settlement should be expected. Footings should be a minimum width of 18 inches for continuous walls and 2 feet for coltm-is. Inose or disturbed soils encountered at the foundation bearing level within the excavation should be removed and the footings constructed on the natural soils. Exterior footings should be provided with adequate cover above their bearing elevations for frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 15 feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining structures should be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of 60 pcf. A perimeter foundation drain should be provided to prevent teirporary buildup of hydrostatic pressure behind the walls and prevent wetting of the lower level. The drain invert should be at least 1 foot below crawl space grade. The reconmendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed within the foundation excavation. Since we did not conduct subsurface exploration, we have assumed the conditions observed in the excavation represent those within the depth of influence of the foundation. In order to reveal the nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter.
