I have researched the origins of the 32" per year evapo-transpiration rate that is used in Pitkin County. The NOAA Atlas shows that a pan ET rate of about 35" per year should be used. I have attached the map for your information. You should note that this is based o, ly on evapotranspiration from the months of May through October. The ET rate of 32" per year can be derived from the dated Pitkin County equation: Area = Q/0.135 and the old State equation: Area = Q -* 237/ET- Combining 37/ET Combining the equations and solving for the EI" rate results in 32". The next issue involved the storage capacity available in the bed. The available storage in the sand and gravel area of the bed was calculated to be 14,983 gallons, using a porosity of 29% for sand and 301/6 for gravel. Although winter time ET rates are not available in the NOAA Atlas, information available in a recent report for the ASPCOL project indicates evaporation does occur in the winter (November -April) at a rate of about 35% of the summer rate (May -October). Using the equation from our plan submittal (Q = 0.0546 * area), there is 215 GPD of ET occurring at the design rate of 32" per year. Taking 30% of this value, is 65 GPD. The absorption occurring in,the system adds 2131 GPD.for a total winter time treatment rate of 2196 GPD. The deficit is, therefore, 2275 GPD - 2196 GPD = 79 GPD. See Figure 4-28. 4-29 give design and construction details of transvap disposal systems with sand and gravel beds to provide storage during the periods when transpiration and evap- oration is low or zero. The sand ridges and sand bed are essential to provide capillarity. Soil evaporation can average one-third to one-half of lake evaporation for 6 months of a year in which average lake evaporation is 30 in./yr. Sublimation during the snow-covered non growing season, although small, can contribute to moisture removal from the system. Example I Evapotranspiration design basis during growing season. Assume a 150 -day (5 -month) growing season, using a soil cover of meadow or lucern grass, and an evapotranspiration of 15- to 36 -in. consumptive use (soil evaporation plus transpiration) dependent on location and vegetation. See Table 4-19. The precipitation during the season is 10 in., of which 8 in. or less infiltrates a well -crowned transvap bed. See also climatological data published by the Weather Bureau, local sources, and NOAA* for monthly precipitation and evapotranspiration data.
