Subject: Soils Evaluation and Percolation Test for Individual
Sewage System Design for the Jefferies Residence, Lot 11, East Owl
Creek Subdivision, numbered as 1121 Cluny Road
Dear Harry,
As requested, Nelson Environmental and Wastewater Solutions, Ltd.,
performed a soils study and percolation tests on the subject
property to design a septic system for the proposed residence. We
conducted this study according to Section 4-5 of Pitkin County
Regulations Individual Sewage Disposal Systems on Sunday, June 20,
1993. We have based our recommendations on the subsurface
conditions encountered. Please furnish this letter to the
Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department at your earliest
convenience to obtain a permit to construct this individual sewage
system.
Proposed Construction:
The planned residence is a five bedroom, five and one-half bathroom
house. The property is served by a subdivision water supply from
wells drilled into the shallow alluvium along the creek bed and
across Owl Creek Road from this subdivision. The let is
approximately 5 acres in size.
Site Conditions:
The site is a platted lot within the East Owl Creek Subdivision.
It is located at the top of a knoll with a small draw to the West.
Most of the lot is forested with aspen trees and native vegetation.
There is a sloping area to the West of the building site that is
mostly sagebrush and grasses. Investigation of this area revealed
a shallow formation of loose shale fragments and clay. It was
evaluated and found .to be less favorable for on-site wastewater
disposal system construction than the areas closer to the road and
to the South.
The ground surface in the proposed area of the absorption field,
appears natural and slopes gently to the Southwest at a 100 grade.

Subsurface Conditions:
,*ON
lwr
The soil profile trench, dug in conjunction with the construction
and installation of utilities, was approximately 80 feet east of
the proposed septic system absorption area. It revealed that the
soils on the southerly portion of this lot are a deep silty loam
topsoil overlaying a sandy clay loam to a depth of eight feet.
The soil texture encountered, in the percolation test holes was
similar to the profile excavation, a silty loam about 29 inches
thick and a sandy clay loam to 3 feet in depth. Though unusual,
there were no loose cobbles intermixed within the soil matrix.
The subsurface soil conditions were evaluated with the standard
percolation test procedures at the approximate location shown on
Figure 1. The set of test holes was hand dug to a depth of three
feet. Several inches of gravel were placed on the bottom of each
hole.
Percolation Testing:
Percolation testing was performed in the proposed absorption trench
area South and slightly West of the residence. This testing was
Performed in three shallow holes excavated with hand tools to a
depth of thirty-six inches. The percolation holes were pre-soaked
by adding water the evening before and at intervals during the day,
before beginning the percolation test in the late evening.
The results of the percolation testing are presented in Table I.
These results indicate the silty loam soils have an average
Percolation rate of 12 minutes per inch, a satisfactory percolation
rate under Pitkin County criteria.
Limitations: This report has been prepared according to generally
accepted practices in this area for use for sewage disposal system
design purposes. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in
this report are based upon data obtained from our site visits at
the location indicated. There is some possibility that the nature
and extent of variations in the subsurface soils across the site
may not have been evident at the time of this investigation, and
may need additional evaluation if further excavation reveals
conditions different from those described. This office should be
advised of any unusual situations as soon as possible so we may
reevaluation of our recommendations.
