The legal description of the property is Lot 4, Eagle Pines. The permit and record drawing were provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (Parcel ID #2735-101-01-004). The subject OWTS consists of two 2000 -gallon concrete septic tanks followed by a splitter box, leading to two sets of serial trenches, one with 51 `Standard' Infiltrator® chambers and one with 53 `Standard' Infiltrator® chambers for a total of 104 chambers. Each `Standard' chamber measures 3' wide x 6.25' long. Individual Sewage Disposal System Permit 01029 documents this OWTS and at the time of permit issuance, was sized to accommodate a 6 -bedroom residence. The enclosed letter from McLaughlin Water Engineers, dated October 17, 2011, outlines then -current sizing criteria and notes the OWTS is sized sufficiently to handle 9 bedrooms. Subsequent OWTS Use Permits issued in both 2011 and 2014 are also enclosed. The first 2000 -gallon septic tank is located near the house. The septic tank lids are accessible from grade, with 4 -feet of risers on the inlet side and 2 -feet of risers on the outlet side. Both inlet and outlet tees were present. An effluent filter is present on the outlet tee. We recommend extending the handle on this tee for better accessibility and cleaning the filter annually, or as needed. There was minimal accumulation of sludge on the inlet side of the tank, but over 18 -inches on the outlet side. This septic tank must be pumped. The second septic tank is located below the Aspen Ski Company access road, approximately 550' to the east of the first septic tank. There are multiple clean outs present between the septic tanks. The septic tank lids are accessible from grade with 1 -foot of risers on each side. Both inlet and outlet tees were present. Accumulation of sludge in the septic tank warrants pumping at this time. Due to the location of this tank, there is ONLY access for pumping during summer months. We observed water entering the first tank in the series and the second tank below. Flow through the system appears to be normal. We walked the soil treatment area. The "splitter box" was not accessible from grade at the time of the inspection. Numerous inspection ports were present throughout the serial distributed fields, as indicated on the record drawing. We observed one inspection port with a missing a cap. No standing water was found in any of the inspection ports and there were no signs of surface saturation or failure in the soil treatment area. Pumping of the tanks has been scheduled with All Valley Resources. The pumping receipt must be submitted with this report. W 0 We recommend identifying all OWTS components with stakes on the property and in a survey document given the distance of some components from the residence, snow cover in the winter months, and dense vegetation in the summer months. This evaluation is not a guarantee of future system performance. This inspection is good for one year. Recommendations: • Clean effluent filter annually, or as needed. • Extend handle of effluent filter so it is more accessible for cleaning. • Mark and survey OWTS components for future reference. This report should be submitted to the Pitkin County Environmental Health Department. The following links are the required application and application checklist. Dean Derosier; McLaughlin Water Engineers, Ltd. RE: Residence - Septic System Design Notes - 300 Eagle Pines Drive, Aspen, Colorado The following are my design notes for the (REVISED) Residence Septic System design. BASED ON THE DESIGN PARAMETERS USED IN 2001 AND THOSE APPLICABLE IN 2011, MWE IS IN THE OPINION THAT THE EXISTING SYSTEM WILL SERVE THE EXPANSION TO 9 BEDROOMS. THE EXISTING SYSTEM WAS INSEPCTED AND TANKS PUMPED AND FOUND TO BE IN GOOD CONDITION TO SERVE THE ADDITIONAL BEDROOMS. ATTACHED ARE THE ASBUILT DESIGN DRAWINGS FROM 2001 DESIGN INFORMATION TO CONFIRM OUR OPINION Original Design based on 2001 PCEH Standards (NEW DESIGN BASED ON 2011 SIDS) - 6 — Bedrooms — (9 BEDROOMS) - Approx. 13,000 Square Feet of living area (SAME) - 130 gallons per day per person (100 gallons per day per person) - 30 minutes per inch perc rates (avg) - Perc Test by HP Geotech Attached (SAME) - Ground water 100+\- feet from surface (SAME) Flow = Q = 6 bed rooms x 2 peo/br x 130 gal/day/per x 1.75 = 2,730 gallons per day. (FLOW = Q = 9 BEDROOMS x 2peo/br x.100 GPDPD x1.5 = 2,700 gallons per day of normal flow) Tank sizing - 6 - Bed Rooms requires 3,500 gallons of septic tanks; Q X 1.25 (9 bedrooms requires 3,375 gallons of septic tanks) The original Design has 4,000 gallons of tanks, thus the original design and installation meets the 2011 PCEH Standards for tank capacity- 3.375 gallons required vs 4,000 installed). The existing system is as follows: The effluent from the house will enter a 2,000 gallon tank for initial settling of solids. The tank will have a Biotube installed in the effluent line of the tank. The effluent from this upper tank will flow down the hill to a second 2,000 gallon tank, also with a BioTube — 400' away. This will provide 4,000 gallons of storage. The second tank is being placed near the system at the bottom of the hill to provide a tank to stabilize the flows after the steep run down from the upper tank, and to provide an additional location with better access for pumping and Biotube maintenance. Area of Septic field required = A A = (Q15) x square roots of the pere rate (AVG) = 2,730/5 X SR(30) A = 2,990 square feet =193 Infiltrators (A=(Q/5xSR of the Pere Rate = 2,700/5 X SR 30 (A= 2957 OR 2,960 SQUARE FEET) ORIGINAL SYSTEM INSTALLED 2,990 SQUARE FEET OF AREA IN 104 INFILTRATOR TRENCHES. THE REMODEL REQUIRES 2,960 SF AND ONLY 95 INFOLTRATORS. THE EXISTING SYSTEM MEETS THE 2011 PCEH STANDARDS. THE ORIGINAL SYSTEM WAS INSTALLED PER THE FOLLOWING DESIGN. Infiltrators 50% reduction for trenches =1,495 SF Infiltrators = 15.5 square feet = 97 infiltrators System size is for 104 infiltrators to allow for even length trenches. Two separate disposal systems are being installed on the bottom of the property. System A will consist of 4 trenches with 15 units 60 total units. System A is located on the east side of the disposal area. The trenches will be 10' apart and step down to match the contours of the hillside. System B will consist of 2 trenches of 15 units and 2 trenches of 7 units for a total of 44 infiltrators. System B is located in the west of system A and is located on the ridge and flat area and again trenches will be 10' apart. Each system will have a 4" Sch 40 PVC line into each row of infiltrators. Tees will be used to split the flow evenly into each set of two rows. The layouts of the systems are required to fit site conditions and meet all setbacks as shown on the attached drawing. A concrete splitter box will be installed just outside the lower tank to split the flow into each system evenly. The soil under the splitter box will be road base a minimum of 6" thick and compacted to 95%. The box will beset level and water tested to verify even distribution into each system. Tanks will be installed as shown on the drawings. Tees will be installed on both the inffluent and effluent lines of the tank, set on the inside of the tank. Set top of line from tee within 1" of the roof of the tank and extend line downward 12" below center line of tee. Fill tank with water prior to backfill to check for leaks and leave water in tank for placing the system in service. Septic tanks will be a two -chambered tanks. Install a OSI 4" diameter Biotube in each new 2,000 gallon tank effluent line, inside the tank. The housing is to be 36" high with a cartridge length of 28", using SDR 35 PVC piping per Pitkin County ISDS requirements. Piping from the home to the tanks will be 4" SDR 35 PVC laid at a minimum of 1%. Insulate lines with less than 5 -foot of cover or in uninsulated crawl spaces. Maximum bend angle is 45 degrees. All piping, including the manifold lines, 4" PVC and, others are to be bedded in a minimum of 2" under and 6" over of 3/4" screened rock. The 104 units will be installed in a trench configuration as laid out to fit the site, setbacks, and other restrictions. Trenches cannot be installed at one elevation, several terraced Ievels may be required to meet contours, individual trenches will be installed to within 1" of level. Other changes may be required to meet contours and site conditions with engineers' approval. C E Provide a maximum of 6' of cover over the units, and a minimum of 2'. Return the slope of the hillside to preconstruction contours. Adjustments to fit site contours, avoiding existing trees, and conditions may be made per approval of the engineer and Architect. Elevations of the tank and trenches will be finalized in the field by the engineer. Installation and operation will be approved by the engineers prior to final acceptance. System must meet all PCEH and MWE standards. No trees or irrigation systems will be installed on top of the septic disposal field. Native grasses and shrubs that do not require watering may be planted over the top of the field. Maintain minimum setback backs from property lines and other setbacks as noted on the drawing to minimize disturbance and maintain maximum visual blocking with natural vegetation. G. Don't: • Pour cooking grease or oil down the sink or toilet. • Rinse coffee grounds into the sink. • Pour household chemicals down the sink or flush them. Don't: • Flush non -degradable products or chemicals, such as feminine hygiene products, condoms, dental floss, diapers, cigarette butts, cat litter, paper towels, pharmaceuticals. Don't: • Park or drive on your drainfield. The weight can damage the drain lines. • Plant trees or shrubs too close to your drainfield, roots can grow into your system and clog it. Don't • Concentrate your water use by using your dishwasher, shower, washing machine, and toilet at the same time. All that extra water can really strain your septic system. Do: • Eliminate or limit the use of a garbage disposal. • Properly dispose of coffee grounds & food. • Put grease in a container to harden before discarding in the trash. Do: • Dispose of these items in the trash can! Do: • Consult a septic service professional to advise you of the proper distance for planting trees and shrubs, depending on your septic tank location. Do: • Stagger the use of water -generating appliances. This can be helpful especially if your system has not been pumped in a long time. • Become more WAerefficient by fixing plumbing leaks and consider installing bathroom and kitchen faucet aerators and water -efficient products.
