satisfactory. Permission is hereby granted to the owner or the agent to perform the work indicated in accordance with the Pitkin
County ISDS Regulation in effect at the time of issue. This permit becomes invalid 6 months from the date that the permit was
issued unless system construction has commenced or an extension has been approved in writing by the Department.
As -built drawings must be included with this permit before the final approval will be issued.

The fee for a ISDS application is $330 for a permit that takes 6 hours or less for the department to approve. If approval takes
longer than 6 hours, a rate of $55 per hour will be charged. The maximum fee is $1000. The basic fee of $330 is due at the time
of application. The remainder, if any, will be due in two stages: first, at the time of issuance of the ISDS permit; second, before
final approval of the ISCS permit.

that any such features not shown on attached site map are not present. Issuance of the permit does not imply the approval of
any other permit required for construction pursuant to Pitkin County codes. No construction may be undertaken until all
approvals and permits have been obtained.
The Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department, Pitkin County and employees of these agencies will be held harmless
should the individual sewage disposal syStemX7malfunction. The permit to construct is issued on information submitted by

system was designed under our Job No. H 837, dated October 28, 1999 and revised May 2, 2000.

Projects that are continuing to be constructed must submit a new application. This application
must be in compliance with the April 15, 2001 (revised) ISDS Regulations.

Dear Mr. Schon,
As requested, we have investigated subsurface conditions performed by our firm at the subject site and
prepared an onsite wastewater system (OWS) design for the proposed residence. The subsurface investiga-
tion was performed on October 12, 1999, and April 19,��0. The original OWS design was performed on
October 28, 1999, and should be discarded to avoid confusion.
SITE CONDITIONS
The property is located in a residential area in Pitkin County, where OWS are required. The proposed drain
field area has a slope of 2-3% to the north, and a moderate cover of native scrub, grasses and aspen trees.
The residence will be served water by the local water district.
PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION
Awe -bedroom residence with a living area greater than 6000 square feet (SF) is proposed as presented on
Figure 1. The OWS was based on 9 be and 2340 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin Envir-
onmental Health Department (APEHD) loading of 130 gallons per day per person. The sewage loading
with a peaking factor of 1.75 is 4095 GPD. This loading includes a garbage grinder and washing machines.
SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS
A subsurface investigation was performed by digging 7 percolation holes, 24 to 40 inches deep, and two
profile pits at the locations indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface conditions in Profile -1 consisted of 6 inches of
a sandy root zone, underlain by silty sand with gravel and large boulders to the maximum depth explored of
8 feet. Subsurface conditions in Profile -2 consisted of 1 foot of a sandy root zone, underlain by sandy, silty
clay to 4 feet, underlain by sandy clay with gravel and boulders to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet.
No ground water was encountered. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 5 to 30 minutes per inch
(MPI). We are designing the drain field in the area of Profile -2, which has an average percolation rate of 23
MPI. Percolation data is presented in Table 1.
RECOMMENDATIONS
(, We recommend the installation of three septic tanks, a pump, and four chamber -type drain field beds
installed at the locations presented on Figure 1. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of
2340 GPD and it percolation rate of 23 MPI. Two 2500 -gallon single -compartment precast concrete septic

tanks to be followed by one 1000 -gallon single -compartment pre -cast concrete septic tank with a pump in a
Biotube vault are required, as indicated on Figure 3. The pump specifications are presented on Figure 4. A
flow splitter basin is necessary to distribute effluent to the fields, as indicated on Figure 2. Each bed must
have 3 rows of 16 chambers, for a total of 192 chambers.
Vehicle movement over the drain field bed area during construction should be kept at a minimum to
prevent compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed should be scarified with a pick,
shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of dispersal gravel.
The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. We recommend using a native seed
mix available at seed stores. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches
high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields.
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE
The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of,
and assume responsibility for maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, we
recommend the septic tank be pumped every two years. Effluent filter and screened vaults, as
applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic
or other nonbiodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized.
The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed
for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas
should not be introduced to the OWS.
LIMITATIONS
An OWS design should be installed by a contractor who is experienced in its installation. Our investigation,
layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably
different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on
the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to
evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon
completion of the OWS
All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements,
septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to
the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The installer of the system is to have demonstrated knowledge of
the APEHD ISDS regulations and requirements.
