The system was designed under our Job No. 11838, dated May 24, 2000. The system includes the installation of one 2000 -gallon, single -compartment, precast concrete septic tank, followed by one 1500 -gallon, two-compartment, precast concrete septic tank with a pump in a BiotubeTM pump vault for the main residence, and one 1000 -gallon two-compartment precast concrete tank with an effluent filter for the caretaker unit. Five gravelless chamber -beds were installed, each bed has 2 rows of 16 chambers for a total infiltrative area of 2480 square feet. A flow splitter basin was used to distribute effluent to the trenches. The pump, alarm, and Biotub6m vault were in place at the time of our site visit. Box 1210 Basalt, Colorado 81621 Subject: Subsurface Investigation and Revised OWS Design, Proposed Smithburg Residence Lot 8, Eagle Pines Subdivision Pitkin County, Colorado Job No. 11838 Dear Mr. Haberman, As requested, we have evaluated subsurface conditions for the site and designed a revised onsite wastewater system (OWS) for the proposed main residence and caretaker/employee unit_ Our firm investigated subsurface conditions on October 12, 1999 and May 18, 2000. This letter should be used in conjunction with our original design. This letter includes two revised figures, Figures 1 and 2, and a continuation of Table 1. The original Figures 1 and 2 should be removed to avoid confusion. SITE CONDITIONS - The lot is located in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, Colorado. The pro- posed drain field arca has a moderate slope of 12-15% to the northwest. There is a thick cover of native grasses, scrub oak, and aspen trees in the proposed field area. There is an existing well southwest of the proposed residence, as indicated on Figure 1. PROPOSED CONS'T'RUCTION - A five ,bedroom residence and a two-bedroom caretaker unit/guest house are proposed at the locations presented on Figure 1. We are sizing the OWS based on 7 bedrooms and 1600 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department (APEHD) loading of 130 and 75 gallons per day per person, as appropriate. The loading was determined based on individual detached structures. The main house, which has greater than 6000 square feet (SF), is proposed to have 5 bedrooms and therefore an average loading of 130 GPD/person was used to determine the average loading of 1300 GPD. The guesthouse has less than 2000 SF, and is proposed to have 2 bedrooms, so the average loading was based on 75 GPD/person for an average loading of 300 GPD. The design sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 for the combined OWS is 2800 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and garbage grinders. The APE14D regulation setback to a well for the proposed loading is 244 feet. An onsite well located 244+ feet southwest of the proposed drain field will serve the residence. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS — A subsurface investigation was performed by digging 6 percolation holes, 19 to 37 inches deep, and two profile pits at the location indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface conditions in Profile -2 consisted of a 1 -foot root zone, underlain by sandy clay with very sandy lenses to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet. No ground water or bedrock was observed in the profile pits. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 15 to 60 minutes per inch (MPI). We are providing an OWS design in the area of Profile -2, based on the average percolation rate of 40 MPI. RECOMMENDATIONS — The OWS is proposed to include the installation of two septic tanks, a lift station with a pump in a biotube vault, and five chamber -beds at the locations presented on Figure 1. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 1600 GPD and a percolation rate of 40 MPI. We a recommend the installation of one 1000 -gallon two-compartment concrete se*1.The k at the caretaker d and one 2000 -gallon septic tank at the residence to be followed by one 1eon two-compartment septic tank/lifitation with a pump in a biotube vault, as indicated on Figure pump shoulddose the J beds with a minimum of 400 gallons. A pump is required due to elevation differences and to distribute the -� effluent through the field to increase the efficiency. The pump must be capable of discharging 30.0 gallons � per minute with a total dynamic head of 30.5. Pump details are presented in Figure 4. A flow splitter basin l (FS 24/30 — 5 outlets) should be installed to distribute effluent among the beds. Five chamber -beds, each with 2 rows of 16 chambers with a 4 -inch perforated SDR 35 PVC pipe to be placed full length on the ground surface should be installed. Our firm investigated additional OWS design alternatives such as recirculating sand filter systems in order to minimize impact on existing vegetation. APEHD allows a maximum drain field size reduction of 30%. Proposing an advanced treatment design would not be cost effective and would not provide additional field size reduction. Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to prevent compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of infiltrators. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. We recommend using a native seed mix available at seed stores. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 15 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of, and assume responsibility for, continued maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years. Effluent filters and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LIMITATIONS A contractor, who is experienced in its installation, should install the OWS design. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the Revised OWS Design Job No. 11838 Page 3 proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. The OWS drain field location proposed by Haberman Construction is possible although a new subsurface investigation and percolation test will be required. The drain field must be 10 feet from all property boundaries, 25 feet from the proposed residence, and 130 feet from the existing well. Our firm investigated subsur- face conditions on October 12, 1999. SITE CONDITIONS - The lot is located in a rural residential area in Pitkin County, Colorado. The pro- posed drain field area has a moderate slope of 12-15% to the northwest. There is a thick cover of native grasses, scrub oak, and aspen trees in the proposed field area. There is an existing well southwest of the proposed residence, as indicated on Figure 1. PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION - A five -bedroom residence and a two-bedroom caretaker unit/guest house are proposed at the locations presented on Figure 1. We are sizing the OWS based on 7 bedrooms and 1600 Gallons Per Day (GPD) using Aspen/Pitkin Environmental Health Department (APEHD) loading of 130 and 75 gallons per day per person, as appropriate. The loading was determined based on individual detached structures. The main house, which has greater than 6000 square feet (SF), is proposed to have 5 bedrooms and therefore an average loading of 130 GPD/person was used to determine the average loading of 1300 GPD. The guesthouse has less than 2000 SF, and is proposed to have 2 bedrooms, so the average loading was based on 75 GPD/person for an average loading of 300 GPD. The design sewage loading with a peaking factor of 1.75 for the combined OWS is 2800 GPD. This loading includes washing machines and garbage grinders. The APEYID regulation setback to a well for the proposed loading is 202 feet. An onsite well located 130 feet southwest of the proposed drain field will serve the residence. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS — A subsurface investigation was performed by digging 3 percolation holes, 19 to 25 inches deep, and one profile pit at the location indicated on Figure 1. Subsurface conditions in the profile pit consisted of I foot sandy topsoil underlain by sandy clay with gravel to the maximum depth explored of 8 feet. No ground water or bedrock was observed in the profile pit. Percolation tests indicate percolation rates of 15 to 60 minutes per inch (MPI). The average percolation rate is 35 MPI. The OWS design is based on an average sewage load of 1600 GPD and a percolation rate of 35 MPI. We rec- ommend the installation of one 1000 -gallon two-compartment concrete septic tank at the caretaker unit and one 2000 -gallon septic tank at the residence to be followed by one 1250 -gallon two-compartment septic tank/lift station with a pump in a biotube vault, as indicated on Figure 1. The pump should dose the beds with a minimum of 400 gallons. A pump is required due to elevation differences and to distribute the effluent through the field to increase the efficiency. The pump must be capable of discharging 30.0 gallons per minute with a total dynamic head of 30.5. Pump details are presented in Figure 4. A distribution box with a baffle should be installed to distribute effluent among the beds. We recommend the installation of five chamber -beds, each with 2 rows of 15 chambers with a 4 -inch perforated SDR 35 PVC pipe to be placed full length on the ground surface. Our firm investigated additional OWS design alternatives such as recirculating sand filter systems in order to minimize impact on existing vegetation. APEHD allows a maximum drain field size reduction of 30%. Proposing an advanced treatment design would not be cost effective and would not provide additional field size reduction. Vehicle movement over the drain field area during construction should be kept at a minimum to prevent compaction of the receiving soils. The bottom of the bed be scarified with a pick, shovel, or backhoe bucket teeth prior to the addition of infiltrators. The surface of the field should be seeded after installation of the fields. We recommend using a native seed mix available at seed stores. These mixes do not require irrigation and develop a growth 10 to 1.5 inches high. No automatic sprinkler system should be installed over the fields. Based on subsurface conditions, and topographic positioning of the well and the drain fields, we believe the setback distance can be reduced to from 202 feet to 130 feet. The resultant flow from the drain fields will be away from the well and contamination of the well by the OWS will be prevented. OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE The owner must realize an OWS is different from public sewer service. The owner must be aware of, and assume responsibility for, continued maintenance of the system. In the absence of a monitoring program, the septic tank should be pumped every two years. Effluent filters and screened vaults, as applicable, are to be cleaned during pumping. There are daily considerations such as not putting plastic or other nonbiodegradable materials into the septic system. Garbage disposal use should be minimized. The backwash of a water softener may be harmful to the OWS. A separate drywell should be constructed for the backwash waste, if a softener is installed. Chemically treated water from a swimming pool or spas should not be introduced to the OWS. LIMITATIONS A contractor, who is experienced in its installation, should install the OWS design. Our investigation, layout, design and recommendations are based on data submitted. If subsurface conditions considerably different from those described in this report are encountered, we should be notified to evaluate the effect on the proposed OWS. If the health department makes modifications to this design, we should be contacted to OWS Design Job No. 11838 Page 3 evaluate the impact on the performance of the OWS. The county and our firm must be contacted upon completion of the OWS All construction is to be in accordance with the ISDS regulations. Pipe type and size, burial requirements, septic tank construction, and other specifications, which are not depicted in our report, are to conform to the requirements of the ISDS regulations. I don't know the owners name. I was on the property on 5/18/00. the profile hole looked good, no ground water or bedrock. It had evidence of shallow topsoil (about 2 feet max.) and then 6 feet of clay type soil. Water was still sitting in two of the 3 perc holes.
