HomeMy WebLinkAboutbocc.res.020.2003 A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PITKIN COUNTY COLORADO, TO SUPPORT A STATE RENEWABLE ENERGY STANDARD TO PROVIDE ECONOMIC BENEFITS FOR RURAL COLORADO Resolution #03-9;~9 WHEREAS, the Colorado legislature will be discussing a renewable energy standard for our state, WHEREAS, this legislation is especially important to counties of Colorado because of the benefits for economic development as well as benefits to health and environment, WHEREAS, Colorado currently produces less than 1% of its electricity from renewable sources, WHEREAS, The National Renewable Energy Laboratory found that Colorado is in the top twelve states for wind potential, top five for solar and geothermal, and has strong biomass potential. There are no other states that rank as high in all categories, WHEREAS, Colorado's rural communities have already experienced monetary loss because of the drought, WHEREAS, a state renewable energy standard will provide relief for Colorado's struggling agricultural communities as ranchers and farmers will have an unprecedented opporttmity to lease or develop land for wind power and to increase use ofbiomass fuel, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of County Commissioners of Pitkin County, Colorado, does hereby urge the Colorado legislature and Governor Owens to implement a renewable energy standard that will require 10% of the state's Public Utilities Commission regulated electricity to come from renewable sources by the year 2010.
