The sand bed area did not show any signs of failure such as surfacing effluent. Inspector Recommendations: Add an effluent filter to the outlet tee of the septic tank if possible. The legal description of the 0.52-acre property is Lot 10, Little Texas Subdivision. The permit and record drawing were provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (Parcel ID # 2463-164-01-011). The subject OWTS consists of one 1500-gallon' two -compartment septic tank. Effluent gravity flows to a distribution box and then to 10 rows of 8 `Standard' Infiltrator® chambers on a sand filter. Individual Sewage Disposal System Permit 98067 documents this system. The permit received final approval on August 22, 2000. The system was sized to accommodate 4 bedrooms. Previous inspections were conducted in 2012 and 2014. OWTS Use Permits 0029.2012.POWU and 0010.2014.POWU were issued after the these inspections were conducted. Three feet of risers bring the septic tank manhole lids to grade. Both inlet and outlet tees were present. We typically recommend adding an effluent filter; however, the outlet tee is tucked under the lid of the septic tank making the installation difficult without extending the tee. The septic tank was pumped by RotoRooter on January 12, 2018. Since that time, occupancy has been intermittent. We ran water through the septic tank for approximately 30+ minutes and normal flow through was observed. They also added a "bio kit treatment". The product is distributed through Pro Pump (website screenshot and RotoRooter invoices enclosed). The distribution box was not accessible from grade. We recommend locating the distribution box and brining access to grade for inspection and maintenance. The soil treatment area (STA) is covered with a flagstone patio. Good vegetation is recommended above an absorption area; however, notes from Pitkin County indicate the county was aware of the patio when they approved the system. One observation port is present. The bottom of the absorption area is approximately 6-feet below grade and it was dry. There was no evidence of surface saturation or failure at the time of our inspection. We also walked the area below the STA and found no evidence of surface saturation or failure. The addition of a 5th bedroom is proposed. There will be less than 6000 square feet of living area. Table 1 below compares the size of the existing OWTS to sizing requirements for 5 bedrooms with less than 6000 square feet of living area under current OWTS regulations. ' Pitkin County ISDS Permit indicates a 2000-gallon septic tank was specified; however, RotoRooter's invoice notes 1500-gallons were pumped. We are using Soil Type 1 (Sand) based on the fact that the design is a sand filter; however, no information on the depth of sand was available in the permit or as -built drawing. Recommendations: Locate distribution box and bring access to grade. This report and a completed OWTS Use Permit Application must be submitted to the Pitkin County Environmental Health Department, or to the Building Department in conjunction with your Building Permit Application. The tank flows to a distribution box that was not accessible from grade to a sand filter bed with gravelless chambers. The absorption area did not show any signs of failure and there was no standing liquid in the observation ports. Inspector Recommendations: Install effluent filter and add risers to the tank to bring them to grade. Department Recommendations: The department recommends making the distribution box accessible from grade.
