LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
November 25, 1980
ROUTINE:
Board Appointments: The Commissioners will consider the appointment of
alternates and trustees at their December 8th meeting.
Friends' Donations: $1,500 worth of books have been placed on order to
be purchased by Friends of the Library. Film programs for children and
adults sponsored by the Friends have begun and will continue to the end
of the year. These are being shown both in Aspen and Snowmass.
Book Sale: The semi-annual book sale will be held in the meeting room
of the Library on December 5th and 6th.
Staff: Sue Grimm has been hired as the new music room librarian. Sue
worked in a music library as a college student and majored in music.
An employee hasn't been hired yet for Snowmass.
Community School : I have been working with some volunteers at the Com-
munity School who are going to organize a library for the school .
• PENDING ACTION:
Holiday Closing Times: Traditionally, the Library closes early on
Christmas and New Year's Eve. This is through Board aciton, and not a
set policy, so it will be on the agenda for discussion.
Three Rivers: Bob Audretsch, Director of the Three Rivers Library System,
has offed to come to any Library Board Meetings in the System to discuss
the new manual the State Library has prepared for Board Members. He
was on the committee which prepared the manual . We should also discuss
whether or not we would like to invite him to our January meeting.
Clinic: Sam Caudill 's office which is apparently responsible for snow
and trash removal from the building called to say they want the Library
to pay half the expenses this year whenever the alley has to be plowed.
They also contacted us today to see if we would like to share the expense
of having a dumpster rather than regular thrash :pick up. 'A dumpster
(with the Library paying one third of the cost) would cost the Library
$72 more a year. I have talked with Brian Stafford, assistant County
Manager, regarding easements on the property, and he suggested a search
be made in the Assessor's Office to see who holds what rights. Perhaps
Mona or Dick may know some of the history on this issue. These issues
are also on the agenda.

Dear Mary:
I have been asked to write to you on behalf of the Pitkin County Library
Board of Trustees to thank you and the other committee members for the.
ski passes and community service pins given to the Board members and the
volunteers. They are very much appreciated.
• I was also requested by the Board to ask that Joan Pomeroy's name be re-
considered as a candidate for the community service ski pass. Joan
has served as an alternate on the Board for over a year and has donated
many hours of time to the Library in this position. An alternate on the
Library Board is under the same requirements for attending meetings
as the regular Board members and serves on committees of the Board. The
only difference between an alternate and a Trustee is that alternates are
allowed to vote only in the absence of a Trustee.
I realize that serving on the Aspen Community Service Committee must seem
a thankless burden at this particular time of year, and I hate to add to
it with this problem, but please realize we are grateful for all you've
done, and are just writing in hopes you can do more:::
One other thing: Gunther Mohling has decided to retire from downhill
skiing, so enclosed is his letter.

The Board, on behalf of Friends of the Library, has asked me
to express our deepest gratitude for the merging of Pitkin
County New Library Fund into Friends of the Library--and for
your magnificent support over the years. There is not a single
area of the Library that has not felt the happy impact of your

donations. You have always been a provident resource in meeting
needs not covered by the County budget. Both the Library and
the community have benefited greatly.
Now that you have decided it's time to relinquish your steward-
ship of the New Library Fund, we can't think of a more appro-
priate or more appreciated disposition than the Friends. As
you know, it is the only other Library fund not under the super-
vision and control of the County government.
You have our sincere thanks.

Appointments of Alternates
Mona Frost and I are not requesting re-appointment to the Board of Trustees.
• Joan Pomeroy, an alternate since August, 1979, has served efficiently and
with dedication. The Board recommends that she be appointed to fill one
of the two vacancies.
Carol Bloomquist and Jane Jenkins have served as alternates since May, 1980.
In discussion, the Board was inclined to recommend Carol Bloomquist to
fill the second vacancy, because Jane Jenkins is active as president of
the Historical Society. Jane pointed out, however, that she is resigning
as president on December 1. The Board therefore voted to recommend that
the Commissioners appoint either Carol or Jane and not consider additional
applicants.
The Library Bylaws require a minimum of two alternates. Mona Frost, in
leaving the Board after many years of devoted service, has agreed to stay
on as an alternate. If this is acceptable to the Commissioners, the re-
quirement for two alternates would be met. It is felt there is no need
to advertise for additional applicants.
In summary, therefore, we recommend appointment of Joan Pomeroy to the Board,
appointment of either Carol Bloomquist or Jane Jenkins to the Board, reap-
pointment of the remaining alternate and appointment of Mona Frost as alter-
nate.
