Library Meeting Room
• MINUTES OF THE April 2, 1984 meeting of the Pitkin County Library Board of
Trustees.
The meeting was called to order by President Joan Pomeroy.
ROLL CALL: Present: Trustees Mary Anderson, Carol Blomquist, Mona Frost,
Joan Pomeroy, Austine Stitt and alternate Pete Stone. Absent: alternate
Jamie Hall. Librarian Kathy Costello also, attended.
The MINUTES of the February 27, 1984 meeting were approved after the amount
of $20.00 was changed to $25.00 to purchase a gift for outgoing "Friend"
Bunny laush.
MINUTES of the Special Board Meeting, March 12, 1984 were approved.
STATISTICS: The Trustees reviewed and approved the Monthly and Financial
Reports.
OLD BUSINESS:
Expansion: Leslie Lee, City-County Planning Department Staff, said
that Monroe Summers, project director of the Rio Grande Plan does
not have the Library on the Master Plan
Kathy Costello will meet with Monroe to review the Plan and to express
the Board's desire to be included. A report of the Rio Grande site,

land available, and time frame will be given at the next meeting.
Leslie Lee stated that the Main Street traffic plan will remain as is.
Projected population figures for the City of Aspen and Pitkin County
will be made available to the Board.
Neighborhood group meetings are to be held during the next month and Leslie
will bring up the question of Library expansion.
Pete Stone suggested that unless the Board has some solid figures to
project costs, further decisions are impossible to plan.
Points of Consideration:
- The Board should be able to consider the least expensive to the
most expensive solution to the problem.
- Money spent on the present site could, possibly, not justify the
final project.
- An architect contacted should be paid for his work.
Friends of the Library: The Money Market Account holds $23,740.05, and
the checking account contains $495.91.
NEW BUSINESS:
Censorship: A panel discussion concerning censorship will be held in the
Library Meeting Room on April 10. Austine Stitt, Trustee, and Kathy
Costello, Librarian, will participate.

• LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
March 28, 1984
Routine:
City/ County Planner: I met with Leslie Lee of the Planning Office on
Monday. She will attend Monday's Board meeting to discuss the City's
planning process and possible relations to the library. She also agreed
to informally poll the public at the community meetings being held at
this time to garner thoughts regarding the library's location.
Censorship: At 7:30 p.m. on April 10th in the library meeting room a pro-
gram will be held on library censorship. This was planned by Susan
Shakely and Mary Beth Grossmann. I hope you will be able to attend.

Burning the Midnight Disk
The electronic library is on the way.Bookworms and •
students who have struggled long and hard against ad- .:.
diction to the tube will start reading and studying books
imprinted on laser disks later this year.The disks,used •
with home computers,would project pages or parts of . . •
pages on an ordinary family television screen. ' •
Lee S.Isgur,vice president and technology specialist
at Paine Webber Mitchell Hutchins,explains k ,„
"Basically,the laser disks will save library space be, - •
cause they will have 100 times the capacity of today's •
floppy disks.The entire Encyclopaedia Britannica could
be put on one or two disks.So could Gray's Anatomy,'
with illustrations."
One side of each disk will have the capacity to store as • • V •
many as 54,000 frames,or pages,in color or black and
white.The reader's computer could be programmed so
that a particular passage or page could be summoned to

the screen,in a'`search"much like those in word proc-
essor software. } �'
