41, MINUTES OF THE May 30, 1984 meeting of the Pitkin County Library Board of
Trustees.
The meeting was called to order by President Joan Pomeroy.
ROLL CALL: Present: Trustees Mary Anderson, Carol Blomquist, Mona Frost,
Joan Pomeroy, and Austine Stitt, and alternate Jamie Hall. Absent: alternate
Pete Stone. Also present was County Librarian Kathy Costello.
The MINUTES of the April 30, 1984 meeting were approved.
STATISTICS: The Trustees reviewed and approved the Financial Report.
OLD BUSINESS:
Microfilm Reader-Printer: The Board decided that the existing reader-
printer should be retained in addition to the new machine to be purchased.
Kathy Costello reported that the price range will be between $4,000 and
$5,000. The Board suggested she view machines in operation before making
a decision on which model to purchase.
Population Projections: Austine Stitt stated that heavy emphasis not be
placed on population projections as a basis for expansion. Instead, the
increased need for information must be addressed in planning for the future.
• NEW BUSINESS:
County Aid in Expansion Planning: Kathy Costello reported that she had
discussed the Library's expansion studies with County Engineer Pat Dolby.
He suggested that the Library Board appeal to the Board of County Commissioners
to assign preparation of proposal studies to the developmental staff members
of the County rather than the Library's hiring outside help. This suggestion
met with approval and it was suggested that Pete Stone be asked to represent
the Library Board at a meeting of the County Commissioners.

May 26, 1984
ROUTINE:
Friends of the Library: During the month of May, $368.94 of Friends'
funds were spent to purchase 29 books, and $219.65 went to buy a file
cabinet to expand the Aspen Times clipping file. The Friends' checking
account holds $996. 16, and the Money Market account has $24,092.73.
Book Sale: The semi-annual booksale will be held June 15th and 16th. If
anyone would like to volunteer, please let me know at the meeting.
Staff: I have hired Taz Lutgring who has volunteered at the library
for the last couple years to work Fridays and Saturdays during the summer
months. The money to cover her wages is present in this year's budget,
because Lynn Schwalm wished to reduce her regularly scheduled hours for
the summer and also due to Carol McArdell's reduced hours.
Equipment: I have placed an order with IBM for one Memory 65 typewriter.
This has 7 K of memory and will be helpful in creation of library card
sets. It can also be made to be compatible with an IBM Personal Com-
puter. It will cost $1,286 at a government discount.
• PENDING ACTION:
Population Projection: In attempting to rewrite the Library Building
Program in line with new standards and new population projections, I
was immediately stymied when I discovered those projections I had re-
ceived from the Planning Office were made for only ten years hence. I
became further so when I heard comments from some of the Board that they
felt these projections are also out of line. It seems further discussion
is necessary before time is spent in reworking the Building Program
and contacting architects to be certain that this work is being done
in line with the views of the majority of the Board. Therefore, this
question appears on the May 30th agenda for discussion.
