Peterman Inspector Manager A and B Asbestos Abatement, Inc. 635 West White Avenue Grand Junction, Colorado 81505 April 15, 1996 A & B Asbestos Abatement Inc. 635 West White Avenue Grand Junction, Colorado 81505 Phone (970) 243-2575 INTRODUCTION On March 28, 1996, three bulk samples we reicollected o£ suspected asbestos containing materials at Pomegranite Condos, 39100 Hwy 82, #E5, Aspen, Colorado. The suspect material consists of sheetrock walls in the condo that are planned for demolition. The inspection was made and the samples were collected by John R. Peterman, an A.H.E.R.A. and State of Colorado certified Building Inspector. Great care was taken during the inspection and sampling to be as accurate as possible. It should be noted that minimal damage was done to the existing building structures during the inspection so there is no documentation for unseen conditions or stored items. All samples were analyzed by DCM Science Lab in Lakewood, Colorado. This laboratory is deemed "Proficient" in the E.P.A. Quality Assurance (QA) program for the determination of asbestos in bulk materials, and is accredited by the American Hygiene Association (AIHA). SAMPLING PROTOCOL A random sampling scheme was used to sample the suspect materials that were discovered. Great care was used to observe all possible areas, however, it is impossible to be certain that every possible source is discovered. It is the belief of the Inspector that all observable sources were noted and sampled. If during any future demolition or renovation work suspect material is discovered and would be disturbed, work should be halted until the material has been tested. If work will disturb materials greater than 160 sq.ft., 260 ln, ft. or the volume equivalent of one 55 gal. drum, additional sampling of the area would be required as per Colorado Regulation 8. Renovation Area DesCYlptiOri: The Pomegranite Condominiums Complex consists of several individual units located at 39100 Hwy 82, Aspen, Colorado. Unit #E5 is the unit that the survey/inspection was conducted in. The area that will be impacted by planned renovation work is a wall and closets between two bedrooms in the Northwest corner of the condo. At the requestof the owner, the inspection/survey was confined to the renovation area. The walls to be demolished consist of taped sheetrock with no texture. At the owners request the samples were randomly collected inside the closets to minimize the visual impact of the sampling. The ceilings in the effected areas is exposed beam with tongue and grove exposed ceiling boards. The floors in the effected area are carpeted. A total of three composite sheetrock bulk samples were collected from the area and submitted for laboratory analysis. The Laboratory Analysis indicates that the composite sheetrock samples do contain asbestos that is less than the Regulatory Limit (Greater than 196 asbestos).. Conclusions and Recommendations: The laboratory analysis of the composite sheetrock samples indicates that the samples contain asbestos that is less than the Regulatory Limit (Greater than 19e). The original analysis of the samples was done by PLM (Polarized Light Microscopy) as per Regulatory Requirements the positive PLM. Samples were re-analyized by Point Count Analysis which is more accurate than PLM. The point count analysis verified that the asbestos content of the samples was indeed less than the Regulatory Limits. Based on current Regulations, the sheetrock partitions can be removed without using asbestos abatement work practices. This is provided that the joint mud is not sanded or impacted on exclusively. Cedar Drive Lakewood, CO 80228 DCM Project No.: AB 1180 Client Job No.: POMEGRANITE CONDOS BUIk Sample Analysis BULK SAMPLE ANALYSIS PROCEDURES: DCM Science Laboratory, Inc. analyzes bulk asbestos samples following procedures developed by the McCrone Research Institute and in compliance with guidelines established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA-600/R-93/116, July, 1993). Bulk samples are prepared for analysis using a 10X-80X stereo microscope in a hepa filter hood which provides a contamination -free environment. The sample is then analyzed by polarized light microscopy (PLM) at 100X. When the sample consists of more than one layer, each layer is prepared and analyzed separately. Fiber and matrx materials are identified by the characterization of optical properties including color and pleochlrorism, form, cleavage, relief, birefringence, extinction, orientation, twinning, interference figure and other distinguishing features. Dispersion staining is also used to further aid in mineral identification. All percentages of asbestos, other fibers and non -fibrous constituents are calculated from the values obtained from the stereo and PLM microscopes analysis. In-house and NIST standards as well as a chart prepared by R.D. Terry and G.V. Chilinger for "The Journal of Sedimentary Petrology", (Vollume 24, pp. 229-2341 1955) provide a guide for estimating percentages. All samples are archived for six months unless other arrangements are made by the client. The analytical procedures followed are described in "Interim Method for the Determination of Asbestos in Bulk Insulation Samples", ( USEPA 600/M4-83-020, 1982), with minor modifications recommended by the Atmospheric Research and Exposure Assessment laboratory, USF.FA, Research Triangle Park, N.C. P Samples analyzed by the point count method are milled to homogenize tl-ie samp e, € prepared on microscope slides and point counted using polarized light microscopy ¢ (PLM) in conjunction with a point counting stage and counter. Four hundred counts are performed on a single preparation of the sample. If asbestos is identified but not counted during the point counting procedure, total asbestos is reported as zero and presence is noted on the report. Other preparation procedures including asking and acid washing may be performed with client permission to improve accuracy in determining asbestos concentration.
