The property is located outside of Aspen Colorado, in an area where OWS and wells are necessary. The revision is based upon a change in the drain field design per owner request. Previous designs should be discarded to avoid confusion. SITE CONDITIONS Two structures (main residence and A -frame) currently exist at the subject property. The main residence will be remodeled and a new CDU (guesthouse) will be constructed. The A -frame house will also be remodeled. Two wells exist on the property as indicated on the site plans, and will provide water to all buildings. SUBSURFACE The subsurface was investigated by digging one 18-foot profile hole. The materials encountered in the profile hole consisted of 1.5-feet of sandy topsoil, underlain by sand with sparse boulders and cobbles to the maximum depths explored of 18-feet. A soil sample was taken and a gradation analysis performed to justify drain field sizing criteria. An LTAR of 1.2 gals/SF/day will be used for the design. be ,k-tz5 a innk csCty\ a.3 Lo a._v\N. DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS MAIN RESIDENCE and CDU — The OWS design is based on 4 total bedrooms and an average sewage load of 700 GPD. The installation must include a 2000-gallon, two -compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter, followed by a drywell. The drywell must be 16 feet by 16 feet and 13 feet deep for a total area of 1088 SF. One foot of imported sand filter material must be Onsite Wastewater Systems Page 2 placed in the bottom of the drywell, overlain by 1/2-inch to 2 1/2-inch washed crushed rock. Perforated PVC laterals will distribute effluent throughout the drywell. Construction must be according to the county ISDS regulations, the septic permit provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health Department, and this design. OPERATION liON INFORMATION ION AND IVIAlNTENANC II+; The surface of the drain field should be seeded upon completion. Vegetation is an important factor in drain field performance. Erosion control should be practiced prior to and during re -vegetation. Geo- fabrics or plastics should not be used over the drain field. Livestock should not graze on the drain field. Plumbing fixtures should be checked to ensure that no additional water is being discharged to OWS. For Example, a running toilet or leaky faucet can discharge hundreds of gallons of water a day and harm a drain field. The homeowner should pump the septic tank every two years and clean the effluent filter as needed. Garbage disposal use should be minimized, and non -biodegradable materials should not be placed into the OWS. Grease should not be placed in household drains. Loading from a water softener should not be discharged into the OWS. No hazardous wastes should be directed into the OWS. Mechanical room drains should not discharge into the OWS. The OWS is engineered for domestic waste only. ADDITIONAL CONSTRIUCTL01N1 NOTES If design includes a pump, air release valves and weep holes should be installed to allow pump lines to drain to minimize risk of freezing. Excavation equipment must not drive in excavation of drain field due to the potential to compact soil. Extensions should be placed on all septic tank components to allow access to them from existing grade. Precast concrete tanks and distribution boxes should be used, unless plastic or fiberglass is required. Access to all tank compartments and distribution devices is optimal. I NSTALI ,ATION 11) S '+ RVAII'LONS ALL SERVICE septic, LLC, and the county must view the OWS during construction. The OWS observation should be performed before backfill, after placement of chambers and distribution pipes. Septic tanks, distribution devices, pumps, dosing siphons, and other plumbing, as applicable, must also be observed. ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified 48 hours in advance to observe the installation. Onsite Wastewater Systems Page 3 LIMITS: The design is based on information submitted. If soil conditions encountered are different from conditions described in report, ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified. All OWS construction must be according to the county regulations. Requirements not specified in this report must follow county regulations. The installer should have documented and demonstrated knowledge of the requirements and regulations of the county in which they are working. Please call with questions. The A -frame house will be remodeled to have 4-bedrooms and 3750 SF of living area. DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS A -FRAME — The OWS design is based on 4-bedrooms and an average sewage load of 800 GPD. The installation must include a 2000-gallon, two -compartment, precast concrete septic tank with an effluent filter, followed by a drywell. The drywell must be 17 feet by 17 feet and 13 feet deep for a total area of 1173 SF. One foot of imported sand filter material must be placed in the bottom of the Revised OWS Design for A -Frame Project No. 1372 11/06/07 Page 2 drywell, overlain by 1/2-inch to 2 1/2-inch washed crushed rock. Perforated PVC laterals will distribute effluent throughout the drywell. Construction must be according to the county ISDS regulations, the septic permit provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health Department, and this design. OPERATION INFORMATION ANTI) MAINTENANCE The surface of the drain field should be seeded upon completion. ADM liONAL CONSTRUCTION NOTES If design includes a pump, air release valves and weep holes should be installed to allow pump lines to drain to minimize risk of freezing. 'INSTALLATION 0 i.>S lIeRVAI['IIONS ALL SERVICE septic, LLC, and the county must view the OWS during construction. LIMITS: The design is based on information submitted. I would like you to do an amendment letter addressing the issues below. MAIN HOUSE/CDU Distribution is split between the 2 beds. One is approximately 70% and the other approximately 30% of the total size. How will the appropriate amount of flow be distributed to each bed? Bedrock was encountered at 6 feet. Maximum burial depth should be no greater than 2 feet in order to maintain a 4 foot separation between the bottom of the system and bedrock. Can this be accomplished given the bed configuration and existing topography or will fill need to be added? A -FRAME Bedrock was encountered at 6.5 feet. Maximum burial depth should be no greater than 2.5 feet in order to maintain a 4 foot separation between the bottom of the system and bedrock. Given the size of the beds and the existing topography, can this be accomplished? Often with bed systems, one side is deeper than another because we seldom work with completely level sites. If there is ANY part of the bed that will exceed the max depth, it should be dealt with by raising the system — which could include adding fill or mounding over the top. Let me know if you have any questions about my request of if I missed something in your design that addresses my concerns. Thanks! Consulting Engineers & Scientists July 12, 2007 Project No. 27-198 Ms. Jaimbea Hall PO Box 4214 Aspen, Colorado 81612 Subject: Percolation Test Results, Hall Residence, 1656 Castle Creek Road, Aspen, Colorado Dear Ms. Hall: As requested, representatives of Yeh and Associates, Inc. observed the drilling of profile and percolation test holes and conducted the percolation tests for use in design of an individual sewage disposal system (ISDS). The investigation included two separate leach field and septic system sites. The findings of our investigation and percolation rates for design of the proposed leach field and septic systems on the subject site are presented in this letter. Site Conditions The subject sites were located on the property at 1656 Castle Creek Road in Aspen, Colorado. The location of each proposed leach field and septic system is presented on Figure 1. Due to access difficulties, the southern group of profile and percolation holes (PH-1) was drilled to the west and above the actual planned leach field location. This area was west and downhill from a separate residential structure known as the "the brother's house" (south and downhill of the main Hall residence) The northern group of profile and percolation holes (PH-2) was drilled on an existing bench adjacent to the existing septic system and downhill of the Hall residence. The property was heavily vegetated. Subsurface Conditions We observed the drilling of the profile and percolation test holes at the approximate locations presented on Figure 1. The soils exposed in the test holes consisted of silty sand with gravel and cobble underlain by cobbles and boulders. Practical drill rig refusal was encountered at 6.5 and 6 feet in PH-1 and PH-2, respectively. Summary logs of the test holes are presented on Figure 2. Bulk samples were obtained and returned to Yeh & Associates lab for testing. A modified California liner was used to obtain a drive sample in PH-1 at a depth of 4 feet and in PH-2 at 3 feet. The drive samples tested had 13 to 40 percent fines (passing No. 200 sieve). The laboratory test results are presented in the Summary of Laboratory Test Results table. The silty sand classified as a SM based on the Unified Soil Classification System. Groundwater was not encountered in the test holes and the soils were slightly moist. Percolation Test Results Three percolation tests were performed near each of the Test Holes PH-1 and PH-2. The following tables present the overall (4 hour) percolation rates for each of the six percolation holes. Each percolation hole was originally drilled to 3 feet with a 4-inch auger and was presoaked overnight. The following day, all six holes were dry. Holes were cleaned out with a hand auger, and then percolation tests were run on the open hole. 5700 East Evans Avenue, Denver, CO 80222 170 Mel Ray Road, Glenwood Springs, CO 81601 570 Turner Drive, Suite D, Durango, CO 81303 Hall Residence Project No. 27-179 Percolation (min/inch) Rate Percolation Hole Location (in reference to PH-1) PTH 1-1 21 PTH 1-2 13 PTH 1-3 51 Average 28 Percolation Hole Location Percolation (min/inch) Rate (in reference to PH-2) PTH 2-1 22 PTH 2-2 48 PTH 2-3 61 Average 44 Limitations The results presented in this report are based upon our data obtained from the test holes at the indicated locations, field observations, laboratory and field testing, and other information discussed in this report.
