RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PITKIN COUNTY,
COLORADO, DESIGNATING THE EMMA SCHOOL TO THE PITKIN COUNTY HISTORIC
INVENTORY
Resolution No.O~[ -2003
RECITALS
1. The Emma Community Trust ("Applicant") has requested that the Pitkin County Board of County
Commissioners ("BOCC") designate the Emma School to the Pitkin County Historic Inventory.
2. The parcel is located at the intersection of Sopris Creek Road and Emma Road, and described as a
parcel of land located in the northwest % of Section 13, Township 8 South, Range 87 West of the 6th P.M.
3. The parcel contains approximately three-quarters of an acre and is a nonconforming size parcel in
the AFR-10 zone district.
4. The Emma School was constructed in approximately 1900 to serve the local ranching community.
The building is representative of rural schools of the early 20th century in its rectangular plan with projecting
entrance topped by a belfry, and its tall evenly-space windows on the long sides of the building. The Emma
School sits in its original location.
5. The BOCC finds that the Emma School is more than 100 years old and retains a high degree of
integrity, and is significant for its representation of rural school houses and its contribution to the history
of Emma and the Roaring Fork Valley, and therefore, is eligible for designation to the Pitkin County
Historic Inventory.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the BOCC that it does hereby designate the Emma
Schoolhouse to the Pitkin County Historic Inventory. Any alterations to the structure, including
maintenance of the building, shall be governed by the Secretary of the Interior Standards for
Rehabilitation, as interpreted by Pitkin County staff.
NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING published in the Aspen Times Weekly on the 10th day of May, 2003.
APPROVED AND ADOPTED on the 11th day of June, 2003.
