Main Street, Suite 302 Aspen, CO 81611 Via email only to: kelly.mcnicholas@pitkincounty.com Charlotte.anderson@pitkincounty.com Dear Chair McNicholas Kury: At its regular meeting on December 16, 2021, the Pitkin County Healthy Rivers Board reaffirmed its endorsement of the designation of the Crystal River as a Wild and Scenic River by unanimous motion fully supporting Pitkin County’s efforts to pursue necessary next steps through to congressional designation. Pitkin County is dedicated to leaving a legacy for future generations by preserving the free flowing character of the Crystal River and has come together to achieve a wild and scenic designation from the top of the headwaters of its north and south forks in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness area downstream to the Sweet Jessup headgate. As you know on April 17, 2012, American Rivers named the Crystal River as one of America’s Most Endangered Rivers. Pitkin County supported this effort as well. Along with past successful litigation of West Divide, we are confident the wild and scenic designation is the next step to preserving the outstanding and remarkable scenic, historic, and recreational values while protecting the water quantity and quality of the Crystal River.
