PITKIN COUNTY,COLORADO HONORING
Phylis Mattice
WHEREAS,Phylis Mattice has held her position as a strong and trusted leader for Pitkin
County for 18 years,serving as Human Resources Director,Internal Services Director,Interim
Manager,and,most recently,Deputy County Manager;and
WHEREAS,it will be difficult to fill Phylis’s shoes because of her endless energy,her
unwavering ability to see an upside in difficult situations,and her love and care for the people of
Pitkin County;and
WHEREAS,in challenging times,Phylis maintained her composure and was decisive with
difficult choices –she could draw a line in the sand,when necessary.Her clear and steadfast
leadership was critical during the COVID-19 pandemic;and
WHEREAS,most recently,Phylis oversaw Human Services,Public Health,and the Library in
her role as Deputy County Manager and was a “total gem”and “incredibly supportive,”
according to her employees;and
WHEREAS,Phylis would often be found supporting the Aspen Thrift Shop on her lunch breaks.
Her finds typically transformed her office space.Phylis had a knack for rearranging her space –
an act that helped her focus during demanding projects;and
WHEREAS,after nearly two decades with the county,Phylis has earned the right to enjoy life’s
next journey and spend it camping,skiing,gardening,baking,and playing with her grandkids.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT PROCLAIMED the Pitkin County Commissioners and the people
of Pitkin County wish to thank Phylis Mattice for her dedicated service and wish her the best in
her well-deserved retirement.
