Dear Mr.Toor:
On behalf of the Pitkin County Board of County Commissioners we submit this letter to the
Colorado Energy Office in support of the Community Office for Resource Efficiency’s (CORE’s)
application to the Clean Air Program.For nearly 30 years,Pitkin County has provided funding to
CORE and we support their continued efforts to move the Coal Basin Methane Mitigation project
forward to address one of the largest GHG emitters in Pitkin County.
Pitkin County supports CORE’s funding request as a private entity applicant for implementation
costs associated with the Coal Basin Methane Mitigation project.Pitkin County provided
$200,000 in funding support for CORE to serve as the project lead working with the US Forest
Service,consultant team and community stakeholder group on the preliminary analysis and
National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)process.We are pleased to see the forward
momentum as a result of the research,analysis and community engagement work over the past
two years.
The abandoned coal mines in Coal Basin above Redstone are a significant source of GHG
emissions within Pitkin County and a priority area to meet our own climate action goals.We
support CORE’s efforts to advance this project and will continue to work closely with CORE to
ensure the success of the Coal Basin Methane Mitigation project.
