Date Pitkin County Open Space & Trails Natural Resource Planner/Ecologist Liza Mitchell Mar-26-2024 Rea Orthner Mar-28-2024 Principal Ecologist/ Botanist Proposal A-26 Red Wind Point Cheatgrass Study Page 1 PROPOSAL PITKIN COUNTY ON CALL ECOLOGICAL SERVICES CONTRACT #008.2019 A-26 Red Wind Point Cheatgrass Study 1.0 SUMMARY This proposal describes a 3-year program to study the effects of indaziflam on the vegetation of the Red Wind Point Open Space, located south of the town of Carbondale, Colorado. 2.0 BASIS OF NEED Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) is a non-native annual grass that is invasive in Colorado and the Intermountain West. Not only does this grass outcompete native plants it provides very poor forage for wildlife. It is called cheatgrass because it dries up relatively quickly and its seeds stick to the mouthparts of animals “cheating” them of nutrition. Cheatgrass, like other invasive annual grasses, is known to increase the fire-return interval of native ecosystems. Cheatgrass dries out much earlier than native vegetation, has very fine leaves and stems, and also grows very close together, creating a continuous fuel base. Some have likened cheatgrass to tissue paper covering the landscape — an easily-ignited fuel that carries fire quickly and spreads it rapidly. Pitkin County Open Space and Trails is currently experimenting with the use of Indaziflam, a pesticide, which has recently been approved to use on rangelands under the brand name Rejuvra. Indaziflam is marketed as a restoration herbicide that features a unique mode of action for rangeland providing long-lasting control of invasive annual grasses and broadleaf weeds (up to 4 years with one treatment). However, Indaziflam may also affect desirable native annuals, as this chemical basically kills any germinating seed. The purpose of study is to better understand the effects of Indaziflam on a disturbed landscape at RedWind Point Open Space. 3.0 APPROACH Tasks 1 through 7. This is a multi-year study which commenced in 2020. We originally proposed one year of baseline data followed by 3-years of “post-spray” data collection, however the study was extended due to the spotty nature of the first herbicide treatment in 2020. The data collection consists of six 50-m long quantitative vegetation (point-intercept) data transects systematically located within the Red Wind Point mesa. The data collected includes vegetative cover, frequency, and species richness. In addition, photos are also annually taken. Task 8. 5th Year 2024 Field Work & Data Entry. This task is for the fifth year of quantitative data collection along the six permanent transects, data entry, data upload to the OST data portal, and preparation of a short “qualitative” email memo of the results post-sampling. The 2024 growing season represents the second year after the more comprehensive cheatgrass spraying was conducted by OST staff in 2022. The monitoring would be conducted by Rea Orthner along with one field-tech to be provided by Pitkin County OST. We expect the field work to be conducted sometime in mid-June. A comprehensive report of the findings is currently expected to be prepared after the 2025 data collection year (or after the 3yrd year post-spray by OST). 4.0 EXPECTED RESULTS, DELIVERABLES & COLLABORATION Attachment A Proposal A-26 Red Wind Point Cheatgrass Study Page 2 After each year of data collection, a memo will be prepared which documents the methods of data collection, a map of the location of the transects and a summary of the results. The raw data in spreadsheet format and all photos will be uploaded to the OST research database. After the conclusion of the study, a comprehensive analysis will be performed and a report written detailing the outcome of the treatment. 5.0 TIMELINE This project has already started and is expected to continue through 2025. 6.0 BUDGET See attached Budget.
