Project Goals

Keep “wild” feel to site.
1) Restore the ecological integrity of the riparian zone through streambank
stabilization, reconnection of the floodplain, and replace invasive weed
communities and plant monocultures with healthy and diverse riparian plant
regimes, while preserving existing bird and wildlife habitat.
2) Develop a long term, self-sustaining solution to improve river channel
stability, fish habitat and spawning areas by promoting conditions that
support and enhance instream biotic structure and diversity.
3) Create a self-sustaining diversion and head gate structure for the Weaver
Ditch to function as part of the river system while improving the water
delivery for the Town of Carbondale and working cooperatively with future
ditch improvements and efficiencies
4) Provide passive user experiences of Riverfront Park through interpretive
signs, trails, gathering spaces, and educational programs.

Healthy Rivers and Streams Board Meeting, July 21, 2022:
The Crystal River Media Project is a video series that will educate the public and dispel misconceptions
about gaining Wild and Scenic congressional designation for the Crystal River.
The focus and goals of this project underscore and advance key objectives and priorities of protecting
the Crystal River, ensuring the ecological health, recreational opportunities, and wildlife and riparian
habitat within the Crystal River Watershed by actively supporting Wild and Scenic designation for the
Crystal River with a creative, educational, and entertaining media project.
The Crystal River Media Project will consist of 10 short videos, three to five minutes each. Each video will
address a different facet of the Crystal River and how we as a community can protect it forever. They
will include interviews from experts related to each video’s topic, with graphics, music, and supporting
footage, that will be edited to create an engaging video. Each video can be shared and used amongst all
parties and organizations who are involved in seeing the Crystal River achieve Wild and Scenic
designation, and widely amongst the general public.
Further, this project will include material to promote a social media campaign to further grab the
attention of the public and to build community education and excitement for gaining Wild and Scenic
status for the Crystal River. This will include a 15-30 second teaser video to accompany each of the main
videos, as well as a 15-30 second testimonial from each of the interviewees regarding the Crystal River
and the impacts that Wild and Scenic designation would have. It will also include 30 still images that will
be branded Pitkin County Healthy Rivers and used for Instagram and various other platforms to maintain
a steady social media presence. Finally, it will include a slideshow that is intended for an upcoming event
to promote Wild and Scenic designation for the Crystal River.
