The legal description of the 0.54-acre property is Lot 33, Holland Hills at Basalt. The permit and record drawing were provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (Parcel ID # 2467-174-01-002). The subject OWTS consists of one 1000-gallon, two -compartment fiberglass septic tank. Effluent gravity flows to four SB-2 trenches, each 3' wide by 56' long. Individual Sewage Disposal System Permit 90033 documents this system. The system was sized to accommodate 3 bedrooms. The permit received final approval on October 15, 1990. The septic tank is located near the southeast side of the residence. No clean out was observed between the house and the septic tank. The septic tank is accessible via two 6-inch diameter riser pipes, which is documented on the record drawing from Pitkin County. While we typically recommend better access to the septic tank, we do not know what type of lids are on the fiberglass tank and if better access is feasible. We were able to observe both inlet and outlet tees through the 6-inch diameter access ports. We typically recommend an effluent be installed on the outlet tee; however, this limited access does not allow the installation, in addition to making thorough inspection and cleaning more difficult. The septic tank was pumped by RotoRooter in 2016. There is normal accumulation of solids in the septic tank. With the limited access, we were only able to measure solids directly under the 6-inch access pipes. There was greater than 1-foot of sludge on the inlet side of the septic tank and approximately 1- foot under the outlet. We recommend pumping prior to transfer of the property. We walked the approximate soil treatment area (STA) which is comprised of SB-2 trenches. We have enclosed specifications for SB-2 pipe. No inspection ports were observed in the STA. According to the drawing provided by Pitkin County, the trenches are connected with a manifold of sorts and not a distribution box. We found no evidence of surface saturation or failure at the time of our inspection. This evaluation is not a guarantee of future system performance. This inspection is good for one year. Recommendations: Pump septic tank prior to transfer of the property. This report and a completed OWTS Use Permit Application must be submitted to the Pitkin County Environmental Health Department. Applications may be submitted to Pitkin County Environmental Health Department electronically. The following are links to the required OWTS Use Permit Application and Checklist.
