Minimum horizontal distances between components of the system and physical features shall conform to the requirements of the Pitkin County OWTS Regulation. Altitude Septic installed the system. The existing septic tank was pumped and the remaining void filled with onsite materials. The existing STA was abandoned in place. The installation included a new Infiltrator® 1000-gallon, two-compartment poly septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet. The septic tank was installed just below the railroad tie retaining wall. Effluent gravity flows to a distribution box, and then to three gravelless chamber trenches. The distribution box is accessible from grade and flow equalizers were installed on each outlet pipe in the distribution box to assure equal flow to each trench. Each trench consists of 15 ‘Quick 4’ Infiltrator® ‘Quick 4’ chambers for a total area of 540 square feet of infiltrative area. The infiltrative area was installed in the sandy loam horizon. Trenches were separated by at least 6-feet of undisturbed soil. Inspection ports were installed at both the beginning and end of each trench. Ports may be cut to grade and placed in sprinkler boxes for access. The OWTS was generally installed according to specifications. This observation is not a guarantee of workmanship and/or parts and materials. ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified if changes are made to the OW TS in the future. Any additional OWTS construction must be according to the county regulations. LIMITS: Observations are limited to components that are visible at the time of the inspection. The installer must have documented and demonstrated knowledge of the requirements and regulations of the county in which they are working. The property is located outside of Aspen, in an area where OWTSs are necessary. The legal description of the property is Lot 61, Block 2, Filing 3 W/J Ranch Homes. Parcel ID: 2643-223-02-006 SITE CONDITIONS A 3-bedroom single-family residence presently exists and is utilizing a shared OWTS that is experiencing problems. The residence is served potable water from W/J Metro District. The W/J Metro District water cistern is located greater than 25-feet from the proposed STA. The water line enters the residence from the west and will not come within 25-feet of any OWTS component. The proposed STA is southwest of the residence and slopes to the southwest at approximately 20%. The proposed STA is covered with native grasses. SUBSURFACE The subsurface was investigated on June 9, 2017 by digging four soil profile test pit excavations (Test Pits). A mini-excavator was used to excavate the test pits. A visual and tactile soil analysis was completed by Carla Ostberg1 at the time of excavation. The materials encountered in Test Pit #1 consisted of medium brown clay loam topsoil to 4-feet, underlain by medium brown sandy loam to a maximum depth explored of 7-feet. No bedrock or groundwater was encountered. This location is in the area of the subject proposed STA site. The infiltrative area must be placed below the clay loam horizon, in the sandy loam horizon. 1 Carla Ostberg holds a Certificate of Attendance and Examination from the CPOW Visual and Tactile Evaluation of Soils Training. 0037.2017.POWT Page 2 The materials encountered in Test Pit #2 consisted of medium brown clay loam with weak structure grades to a maximum depth explored of 5.0-feet. No bedrock or groundwater was encountered. The materials encountered in Test Pit #3 consisted of medium brown clay loam with weak structure grades to a maximum depth explored of 5.0-feet. No bedrock or groundwater was encountered. The materials encountered in Test Pit #4 consisted of medium brown clay loam with weak structure grades to a maximum depth explored of 1.5-feet where the exiting STA serving 489 and 499 Upper Bullwinkle Circle was encountered. STA sizing is based on Soil Type 2, Sandy Loam. A long-term acceptance rate (LTAR) of 0.6 gallons per square foot will be used to design the OWTS, in accordance with Pitkin County OWTS Regulation, Table 6.28-7. A design flow of 450 gallons/person/day (GPD) will be used. The existing septic tank will be pumped and the top, bottom and sides crushed. The remaining void will be filled with onsite materials. The existing STA will be abandoned in place. 0037.2017.POWT Page 4 Design Calculations: 3 bedrooms x 75 GPD x 2 people/bedroom = 450 GPD Septic Tank Capacity = min. 1000-gallon, two=compartment concrete septic tank STA = 450 GPD / 0.60 SF/gallon (Sandy Loam) = 750 SF 750 SF x 1.0 (gravity trenches) x 0.7 (chambers) = 525 SF The existing sewer line from the residence to the existing septic tank must be explored and if cast iron or found to be in poor condition must be replaced with 4-inch diameter SDR-35 sewer pipe with minimum 2% grade and a double sweep clean out. The installation must include a 1000-gallon, two-compartment poly septic tank with an effluent filter on the outlet. Risers must bring manhole lids to grade for access. Effluent will gravity flow to a distribution box, and then to three gravelless chamber trenches. The distribution box must be accessible from grade and must have flow equalizers, or similar product, installed on each outlet pipe in the distribution box to assure equal flow to each trench. Each trench will consist of 15 ‘Quick 4’ Infiltrator® ‘Quick 4’ chambers for a total area of 540 square feet of infiltrative area. The infiltrative area must be installed in the sandy loam horizon, which was encountered approximately 4-feet below native grade in the soil profile test pit. The infiltrative area may not be more than 4-feet below final grade, which may result in some re-grading after installation of the trenches. Trenches must be separated by at least 6-feet of undisturbed soil. Inspection ports must be installed at both the beginning and end of each trench. Ports may be cut to grade and placed in sprinkler boxes for access. The component manufacturers are typical of applications used by contractors and engineers in this area. Alternatives may be considered or recommended by contacting our office. Construction must be according to Pitkin County Onsite Wastewater Treatment System Regulations, the OWTS Construction Permit provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health Department, and this design. PERMIT APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS If your development includes obtaining a Building Permit, applications for the OWTS Construction Permit must be submitted to the Building Department at the time of your pre-application conference. If this is a repair or construction of a new system NOT associated with a Building Permit, you must submit your OWTS Construction Permit Application directly to Pitkin County Environmental Health Department. REVEGETATION REQUIREMENTS An adequate layer of good quality topsoil capable of supporting revegetation shall be placed over the entire disturbed area of the OWTS installation. A mixture of native grass seed that has good soil stabilizing characteristics (but without taproots), provides a maximum transpiration rate, and competes well with successional species. No trees or shrubs, or any vegetation requiring regular irritation shall be placed over the STA. Until vegetation is reestablished, erosion and sediment control measures shall be implemented and maintained on site. The owner of the OWTS shall be responsible for maintaining proper vegetation cover. 0037.2017.POWT Page 5 OPERATION INFORMATION AND MAINTENANCE The property owner shall be responsible for the operation and maintenance of each OWTS servicing the property. The property owner is responsible for maintaining service contracts for manufactured units, alternating STAs, and any other components needing maintenance. Geo-fabrics or plastics should not be used over the STA. No heavy equipment, machinery, or materials should be placed on backfilled STA. Livestock should not graze on the STA. Plumbing fixtures should be checked to ensure that no additional water is being discharged to OWTS. For example, a running toilet or leaky faucet can discharge hundreds of gallons of water a day and harm a STA. If an effluent filter or screen has been installed in the OWTS, we recommend this filter or screen be cleaned annually, or as needed. If the OWTS consists of a pressurized pump system, we recommend the laterals be flushed annually, or as needed. The homeowner should pump the septic tank every two years, or as needed gauged by measurement of solids in the tank. Garbage disposal use should be minimized, and non-biodegradable materials should not be placed into the OWTS. Grease should not be placed in household drains. Loading from a water softener should not be discharged into the OWTS. No hazardous wastes should be directed into the OWTS. Mechanical room drains should not discharge into the OWTS. The OWTS is engineered for domestic waste only. ADDITIONAL CONSTRUCTION NOTES If design includes a pump, weep holes must be installed to allow pump lines to drain to minimize risk of freezing. The pump shall have an audible and visual alarm notification in the event of excessively high water conditions and shall be connected to a control breaker separate from the high water alarm breaker and from any other control system circuits. The pump system shall have a switch so the pump can be manually operated. Excavation equipment must not drive in excavation of the STA due to the potential to compact soil. Extensions should be placed on all septic tank components to allow access to them from existing grade. Backfill over the STA must be uniform and granular with no material greater than minus 3-inch. INSTALLATION OBSERVATIONS ALL SERVICE septic, LLC must view the OWTS during construction. The OWTS observation should be performed before backfill, after placement of OWTS components. Septic tanks, distribution devices, pumps, dosing siphons, and other plumbing, as applicable, must also be observed. ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified 48 hours in advance to observe the installation. LIMITS: The design is based on information submitted. If soil conditions encountered are different from conditions described in report, ALL SERVICE septic, LLC should be notified. All OWTS construction must be according to the county regulations. Requirements not specified in this report must follow applicable county regulations. To exercise its warranty rights, Holder must notify Infiltrator in writing at its Corporate Headquarters in Old Saybrook, Connecticut within fifteen (15) days of the alleged defect. Infiltrator will supply replacement Units for Units determined by Infiltrator to be covered by this Limited Warranty.
