The legal description of the property is Unit 1, Badger Hollow Townhomes. The permit and record drawing was provided by Pitkin County Environmental Health Department (Parcel ID #2735-032-02-001). The subject OWTS consists of a 1500-gallon, single-compartment concrete septic tank followed by a 1500-gallon, two-compartment septic tank with an Orenco® Biotube Pump Vault and duplexing pump system in the second compartment of the septic tank. Effluent is pumped to a distribution box and then to six gravelless chamber trenches, each with 12 ‘Standard’ Infiltrator® chambers for a total of 72 chambers and 1350 square feet of infiltrative area. Individual Sewage Disposal System Permit 01051 documents this system. The system was sized to accommodate 6 bedrooms. The permit received final approval on July 15, 2002. The septic tanks are located to the north of the eastern most duplex. The outlet side of the first septic tank in series was accessible from grade at the time of our inspection. The septic tank had an accumulation of solids was at approximately 30% of the tank capacity and warranted pumping. This septic tank was pumped by Altitude Septic on November 29, 2016. The inlet side of the septic tank was uncovered for the pumping and was only a few inches below grade. There are two inlets into the septic tank; one from each duplex. The outlet tee was present in the septic tank and liquid levels in the tank were normal prior to pumping. Only the pump chamber of the second septic tank in the series was accessible at the time of the inspection. The filter and float tree do not have a handle extension making removal of either very difficult. Operation of the float pumps required entering the manway. We recommend adding a handle extension to both the effluent filter and the float tree. We tested the pumps and the alarm by lifting the floats and all were operational. The control panel for the pumps is located on the northern wall of the east duplex. Note the different pump run times on the duplexing pump system (photo below). We do know that a bad float was replaced in 2012 at the time of the last inspection. Effluent is pumped to a distribution box, which was not accessible from grade at the time of our inspection. We were no able to inspect this component. We recommend locating and bringing the distribution box to grade for future inspection and monitoring. We walked the approximate soil treatment area (STA) and inspection ports are present at the end of each trench. All ports were dry at the time of our inspection. We walked the entire area and found no evidence of surface saturation or failure at the time of our inspection. This evaluation is not a guarantee of future system performance. This inspection is good for one year. 0069.2016.POWU Recommendations: • Clean effluent filter annually, or as needed. • We recommend adding a handle extension to both the effluent filter and the float tree. • Locate distribution box and bring to grade.
