College Professor, Assistant Campus Dean, Peace Officer, Police Chief, volunteer
at CMC Spring Valley library, surviving in this valley for 45 years
Have you been involved in other boards or
committees? If so, which ones?
Yes. Multiple committees at Colorado Mountain College, Cities of Aspen and
Snowmass Village. Served on Ninth Judicial District VALE Board for five years,
Advocate Safehouse Board four years, Aspen Foundation three years, Aspen
Community School three years and a wide variety of ad hoc work, community, social
and church committees over my years in the Roaring Fork Valley.
What would you like to achieve through your
involvement on this Board?
Do my part to continue the excellent level of service the Library already provides
while being open to ways to address ongoing challenges the Library will face during
my tenure on the Board.
Talk about your personal values and how you
view them overlapping with library values?
Wherever I travel I always try to find the local library in which to spend a little time.
Every one has its own personality and energy, while always feeling like a safe place
for me. The library is a space devoid of judgement. We're all equal when we walk
through the door. My core values come from learning that life is a team sport and
collaboration is key and you never know where the next great idea is going to come
from.
What do you see as the top issues or
challenges facing the Library District and how
would you assist fellow Board members in
addressing these issues?
There is great pressure of late to turn the library (in a universal sense) into a place
(actual and symbolic) that reduces rather than broadens inquiry. I see my role as
providing the Director and staff practical and moral support for maintaining the
current Library policies that support intellectual inquiry.
What barriers to participating on the Board of
Trustees are in your way? Childcare? Needing
language interpretation? Needing a bite to eat
after a long workday in order to attend evening
meetings? Other?
Every Winter my wife and I spend two months in a place where the inhabitants have
never seen a snow shovel and don't know what a pair of Sorel boots are. I would
miss meetings during that time.
Are you able to attend monthly meetings on the
third Monday of each month at 5:15 pm? Yes
Board Trustees are asked to serve on one or
two board committees which meet monthly. Are
you able to commit to this?Yes
