BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS
April 25, 2018
Re: Support for interim study committee regarding affordable housing
Dear Representative Duran and Fellow Legislative Council Members:

The Pitkin County Board of County Commissioners urges the Legislative Council to support the
request by Representative Roberts for an interim study committee regarding affordable housing.
The availability of affordable housing is among the most pressing issues communities large and
small, rural and urban, face throughout Colorado. With the population of Colorado expected to
double over the next 25 years, the housing crunch will continue to impact communities and force residents to choose between the high cost of living or moving elsewhere. If we allow this trend to
continue, we all risk the vitality and economic resiliency of the state.
There have been a number of new proposals this year that seek to address the housing crisis in
different ways, but a majority have been defeated. It is time for Coloradans to come together to
find a statewide solution to affordable housing. The proposed interim committee is addressing the
concerns that have been highlighted in various failed legislative proposals and has identified
different strategies and solutions for addressing the problem.
On behalf of communities that have been grappling with the housing shortage for over 40 years,
please support the affordable housing interim committee.
Sincerely,
Greg Poschman
Vice Chair
Pitkin County Board of County Commissioners
