HomeMy WebLinkAboutPitkin Response Regarding CORE Act 2019BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS May 28,219 530 East Main Street Aspen, Colorado 81611 Phone: (970) 920-5200 www .pitki nco unty.co m Club 20 Executive Committee and Christian Reece, Executive Director Dear Club 20 Executive Committee, The Pitkin County Commissioners are disappointed the Club 20 Executive Committee chose to abandon its process and disregard its broader membership by sending a letter commenting on the CORE Act that does not reflect the voice of all of its members, or the formal role of the Public Lands Steering Committee. It was stated at the recent Spring Conference that Club 20 would NOT be taking a position on this legislation since there are divisions within the membership, with several counties who strongly support the measure and several who do not. As members of Club 20, members of the Public Lands Steering Committee and a community directly affected by the CORE Act that has worked firsthand on the topic with broad array of stakeholders for many years, Pitkin County strongly supports the CORE Act and has attached our letter of support to federal delegation for the Executive Board. While Pitkin County is frustrated that Club 20 chose to send a letter commenting on a subject that it was agreed upon there was no position, we are more discouraged by the lack of a transparent process that unfolded between the Spring Conference and the time the final letter was sent out. We did not receive. any outreach from Club 20 leadership and feel it is quite disingenuous that Club 20 failed to reach out to the bill sponsors, or communities with firsthand knowledge of the legislation, to address any arising issues with the CORE Act and their potential impact to communities across the Western Slope. We question the process which lacked both transparency and inclusiveness used to craft and submit this letter, and its break with the protocol and rules of decorum that Club 20 was founded on. We hope at the summer conference in Snowmass that the Executive Board and the Club 20 membership will directly address our concerns about Club 20 procedures and identify appropriate steps to remedy this shortfall moving forward.
