Dear Board of Commissioners:
As the Roaring Fork Safe Passages is years off, I have come to realize that there is little that
BOCC can do regarding the loss of human life on Hwy82 when vehicles collide with a 900 pound
bull elk. Elected public officials first obligations is to keep the public safe. With the closure of the
Airport for revamping, a bad migratory animal situation is going to become worse. In thinking of this
conundrum, it occured to me that motion sensors on Hwy82 that ran from dusk to dawn could alert
drivers that animals were on the move. Motion sensors are simple devices so I called Colorado
Parks & Wildlife, spoke to Carla, who led me to Curtis Tesch, a wildlife officer, who led me to Mike
@ CDOT at Hanging Lake, who led me to Shilo who works for CDOT. Shilo is going to ask his
supervisors regarding the construction of highway motion sensors. This is not "rocket science." If
this goes nowhere, I would ask each of you to consider a superb local electrician to design this and
with the use of solar could be installed by next fall in critical highway locations. This approach
would keep us free of the bungling of bureaucray and 'red tape.' I would also suggest that during
migrating season traffic signs be put up in critical migration areas that read 10 mph. What are your
thoughts?
