Dear Ms. Livingston: As requested, we have conducted a subsoil study for the proposed garage addition at the subject site. Subsurface conditions encountered in the exploratory boring drilled in the proposed building area consist of about 1 foot of gravel fill overlying stiff to very stiff sandy clay ' with shale fragments. Weathered to hard claystone-shale bedrock was encountered beneath the clay at a depth of about 8 feet. Groundwater was not encountered in the boring at the time of drilling. The proposed garage addition can be founded on spread footings placed on the natural clay subsoils and designed for an allowable bearing pressure of 1,500 psf. The bearing level could be relatively deep along the north downhill side to reach the natural soils. The report which follows describes our exploration, summarizes our findings, and presents our recommendations. It is important that we provide consultation during design, and field services during construction to review and monitor the implementation of the geoteclmical recommendations. If you have any questions regarding this report, please contact us. Sincerely, WORTH - PAWLA~ GEOTECHNICAL, INC. The project site is shown on Fig. 1. The purpose of the study was to develop recommendations for the foundation design. The study was conducted in accordance with our agreement for geotechnlezd engineering services to $illian Livingston dated March 21, 2001. An exploratory boring was drilled on the lot to obtain information on the subsurface conditions. Samples of the subsoils and bedrock obtained during the field exploration were tested in the laboratory to determine their classification, compressibility or swell and other engineering characteristics. The results of the field exploration and laboratory testing were analyzed to develop recommendations for foundation types, depths and allowable pressures for the proposed building foundation. This report summarizes the data obtained during tiffs study and presents our conclusions, design recommendations and other geotechnical engineering considerations PROPOSED CONSTRUCTION The proposed garage addition will consist of a two story, wood frame structure attached to the north side of the existing residence. Ground floor will be slab-on-grade. We understand that grading for the structure will involve cut depths of about 4 feet. The placement of up to about 10 feet of fill is proposed to be used to achieve design garage slab elevation for the addition. We assume relatively light foundation loadings, typical of the proposed type of construction. If building loadings, location or grading plans change significantly from those described above, we should be notified to re-evaluate the recommendations contained in thi~ report. H-P GEOTECH -2- SITE CONDITIONS The site is occupied by an existing three story, wood frame residence with a slab-on-grade floor, The ground surface in the area of the existing residence has been benched relatively flat. A very steep fill slope at a grade of about 50% is located on the north side of the existing residence for construction of the existing parking area. The depth of fill appears to be between about 4 to 6 feet. The grade of the natural slope is about 15% to 20% down to the northwest. Vegetation consist of scattered juniper trees and thick brush. FIELD EXPLORATION The field exploration for the project was conducted on March 30, 2001. One exploratory boring was drilled at the location shown on Fig. 1 to evaluate the subsurface conditions. The boring was advanced with 4 inch diameter continuous flight augers powered by a truck-mounted Longyear BK-51HD drill rig. The boring was logged by a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. Samples of the subsoils were taken with a 2 inch I.D. spoon sampler. The sampler was driven into the subsoils at various depths with blows from a 140 pound hammer falling 30 inches. This test is similar to the standard penetration test described by ASTM Method D-1586. The penetration resistance values are an indication of the relative density or consistency of the subsoils and hardness of the bedrock. Depths at which the samples were taken and the penetration resistance values are shown on the Log of Exploratory Boring, Fig. 2. The samples were returned to our laboratory for review by the project engineer and testing. SUBSURFACE CONDITIONS A graphic log of the subsurface conditions encountered at the site is shown on Fig. 2. The subsoils consist of about 1 foot of gravel fill overlying stiff to very stiff H-P GEOTECH -3- sandy clay with shale fragments. Weathered to hard claystone-shale bedrock was encountered beneath the clay at a depth of about 8 feet. Laboratory testing performed on samples obtained from the boring included natural moisture content, density, Atterberg limits and finer than sand size gradation analyses. Results of swell-consolidation testing performed on relatively undisturbed drive samples of the clay and weathered claysmne, presented on Fig. 4, indicate Iow to moderate compressibility under conditions of loading and wetting. The sample of weathered clayst0ne from a depth of i0 feet showed a low expansion potential when wetted under a constant light surcharge. The laboratory testing is summarized in Table I. No free water was encountered in the boring at the time of drilling. The subsoils were slightly moist to moist. The bedrock was slightly moist. DESIGN RECOMMENDATIONS FOUNDATIONS Considering the subsoil conditions encountered in the exploratory boring and the nature of the proposed construction, we recommend the building be founded with spread footings bearing on the natural subsoils. The design and construction criteria presented below should be observed for a spread footing foundation system. 1) Footings placed on the undisturbed natural clay soils should be designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 1,500 psf. Based on experience, we expect settlement of footings designed and constructed as discussed in this section will be about 1 inch. There could be about 1 inch of additional differential settlement if the bearing soils become wetted. 2) The footings should have a minimum width of 16 inches for continuous walls and 2 feet for isolated pads. 3) Exterior footings and footings beneath unheated areas should be provided with adequate soil cover above their bearing elevation for frost H-P GEOTEGH -4- 6) protection. Placement of foundations at least 42 inches below exterior grade is typically used in this area. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at least 12 feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining structures (if any) should also be designed to resist a lateral earth pressures as discussed on the "Foundations and Retaining Walls" section of this report. All existing fill, topsoil and any loose or disturbed softs should be removed and the footing bearing level extended down to the finn natural soils. The bearing level of the north wall will apparently be relatively deep to reach the natural softs. A representative of the geotechnical engineer should observe all footing excavations prior to concrete placement to evaluate bearing conditions. FOUNDATION AND RETAINING WALLS Foundation walls and retaining structures which are laterally supported and can be expected to undergo only a slight amount of deflection should be designed for a lateral earth pressure computed on the basis of an equivalent fluid unit weight of 55 pcf for backfill consisting of the on-site fmc-grained soils and 45 pcf for backfill consisting of imported granular materials. Cantilevered retaining structures which are separate from the residence and can be expected to deflect sufficiently to mobilize the full active earth pressure condition should be designed for a lateral earth pressure computed on the basis of an equivalent fluid unit weight of 50 pcf for backfill consisting of the on-site fine-grained soils and 35 pcf.for backfill consisting of imported granular materials. Backfill should not contain vegetation, topsoil or oversized rock. All foundation and retaining structures should be designed for appropriate hydrostatic and surcharge pressures such as adjacent footings, traffic, constraction materials and equipment. The pressures recommended above assume drained conditions behind the walls and a horizontal baclffill surface. The buildup of water behind a wall or an upward sloping backfill surface will increase the lateral pressure imposed on a H~P G~OTECH -5- foundation wall or retaining structure. An underdrain should be provided to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup behind walls. Backfill should be placed in uniform lifts and compacted to at least 95% of the maximum standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. Backfill in pavement and walkway areas should be compacted to at least 95 % of the maximum standard Proctor density. Care should be taken not m overcompact the backfill or use large equipment near the wall, since this could cause excessive lateral pressure on the wall. Some settlement of deep foundation wall backfill should be expected, even if the material is placed correctly, and could result in distress to facilities constructed on the backfill, The lateral resistance of foundation or retaining wall footings will be a combination of the sliding resistance of the footing on the foundation materials and passive earth pressure against the side of the footing. Resistance to sliding at the bottoms of the footings can be calculated based on a coefficient of friction of 0.30. Passive pressure of compacted backfill against the sides of the footings can be calculated using an equivalent fluid unit weight of 300 pcf. The coefficient of friction and passive pressure values recommended above assume ultimate soil strength. Suitable factors of safety should be included in the design to limit the strain which will occur at the ultimate strength, particularly in the case of passive resistance. Fill placed against the sides of the footings to resist lateral loads should be compacted to at least 95 % of the maximum standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. FLOOR SLABS The natural on-site soils, exclusive of topsoil, or imported structural fill are suitable to support lightly loaded slab-on-grade construction. Up m 10 feet of fill will be placed to achieve design slab grade. There could be some long term floor slab settlement due to the relatively deep frll. The settlement would be differential for slabs bearing on the natural clays and slabs bearing on structural fill. The potential for differential settlement can be reduced by providing at least 3 feet of compacted structural fill below the entire slab. Even with proper placement and compaction of the backfill, some settlement should still be expected. We estimate the settlement may be H-P GEOTECH -6- about 2 inches and occur over a relatively long term. Use of a select granular ill/ material, such as CDOT Class 5 or 6 aggregate base course and a higher degree of compaction should help limit the backfill settlement. The select granular fill should be needed only below the building area. An open graded material such as crushed rock, which could allow water into the subsoils, should not be used as the fill. To reduce the effects of some differential movement, floor slabs should be separated from all bearing wails and COll]mn~ with expansion joints which allow unrestrained vertical movement. Floor slab control joints should be used to reduce damage due to shrinkage cracking. The requirements for joint spacing and slab reinforcement should be established by the designer based on experience and the intended slab use, A minimum 4 inch layer of sand and gravel base should be placed beneath interior slabs-on-grade. This material should consist of minus 2 inch aggregate with at least 50% retained on the No. 4 sieve ahd less than 12% passing the No. 200 sieve. Alt fill materials for support of floor slabs should be compacted to at least 95 % of maximum standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum. Required fill can consist of the on-site soils or suitable imported granular fall devoid of vegetation, topsoil or oversized rock. SITE GRADING The risk of construction-induced slope instability at the site appears low provided cut and fill depths are limited. We understand that cut depths will be up to about 4 feet. Fills should be limited to about 8 to 10 feet deep, especially at the downhill side of the residence where the slope steepens. Embankment fills should be compacted to at least 95 % of the maximum standard Proctor density near optimum moisture content. Prior to fill placement, the subgrade should be carefully prepared by removing all vegetation and topsoil and compacting to 95 % standard Proctor density. The fill should be benched into the portions of the hillside exceeding 20% grade. Permanent uuretained cut and fill slopes should be graded at 2 horizontal to 1 vertical or flatter and protected against erosion by revegetation or other means. The risk of slope instability will be increased if seepage is encountered in cuts and flatter H-P GEOTECH -7- slopes may be necessary. If seepage is encountered ir permanent cuts, an investigation should be conducted to determine if the seepage will adversely affect the cur stability. This office should review site grading plans for the project prior to construction. SURFACE DRAINAGE The following drainage precautions should be observed during construction and maintained at all times after the addition has been completed: 1) Inundation of the foundation excavations and underslab areas should be avoided during construction. 2) Exterior backfill should be adjusted to near optimum moisture and compacted to at least 95 % of the maximmn standard Proctor density in pavement and slab areas and to at least 90% of the maximum standard Proctor density ir landscape areas. 3) The ground surface surrounding the exterior of the building should be sloped to drain away from the foundation in all directions. We recommend a I~inirn~un slope of 12 inches in the first 10 feet in unpaved areas and a minim~un slope of 3 inches in the first 10 feet in paved areas. 4) Roof downspouts and clrains should discharge well beyond the limits of all backfill. 5) Landscaping which requires regular heavy irrigation should be located at least 10 feet from the building. LIMITATIONS This study has been conducted in accordance with generally accepted geotechnical engineering principles and practices in this area at this time. We make no warranty either expressed or implied. The conclusions and recommendations submitted in this report are based upon the data obtained from the exploratory boring drilled at the location indicated on Fig. 1, the proposed type of Construction and our experience in the area. Our findings include extrapolation of the subsurface conditions identified at the exploratory boring and variations in the subsurface conditions may not become evident H-P GEOTECH -8- until excavation is performed. If conditions encountered during construction appear different from those described in this report, we should be notified so that re-evaluation of the recommendatiom may be made. This report has been prepared for the exclusive use by our client for design purposes. We are not responsible for technical interpretations by others of our information. As the project evolves, we should provide continued consultation and field services during construction to review and monitor the implementation of our recommendations, and to verify that the recommendations have been appropriately interpreted. Significant design changes may require additional analysis or modifications to the recommendations presented herein. We recommend on-site observation of excavations and foundation bearing strata and testing of structural fill by a representative of the geotechnical engineer. Sincerely, HEPWORTH - PAWLAK GE~C.
