BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
RESOLUTION
APPOINTING A BICYCLE COMMITTEE
#74-69
WHEREAS the public safety, health and welfare are being threatened
by rapidly increasing numbers of automobiles to the detriment of the
non-motorized public; and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interests of most of the residents and
visitors to the County to encourage the use of non-motorized transportation
as a high priority and practical alternative where most destinations are
within cycling distance; and,
WHEREAS, the physical separation of motorized and non-motorized
forms of transportation would
1. provide safety and enjoyment to non-motorized form~ of
transportation
2. encourage the use of non-motorized forms of transporta-
tion, thereby reducing traffic and parking problems,
3. allow better traffic flow to all forms of transportation,
4. provide additional recreational opportunities to the
general public, and
5. provide economic benefits to the community, social benefits
and environmental benefits.
THEREFORE Pitkin County does hereby appoint an advisory committee
to assist in the planning and development of a bikeway system throughout
the County in cooperation with the City of Aspen and State of Colorado.
The following persons are hereby appointed to serve as members of
said committee: Frederick Benedict, Bert Bidwell, Tanny Bishong, Ed
Compton, John Faulkner, Joyce Gruenberg, Connie Harvey, Biege Jones,
John Kuehlman, Stuart Mace, Ken Moore, Ken Reid, John Stoller, Tom Sykes
and Hank Thurston
The Committee shall establish priorities for implementation of a
Community Bikeways System, make recommendations to City, County and State
Goveznments and assist in the development of a Community Bikeway System.
