Re: Federal Grant Funding Opportunity Under Section 5339 (b) Buses and Bus Facilities Program
Dear Administrator Fernandez:
Please accept this letter of support on behalf of the Pitkin County Board of County
Commissioners, in Pitkin County, Colorado. Our board is in support of the application
submitted by the Town of Snowmass Village (Town) to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA)
for the Section 5339 (b) Buses and Bus Facilities Program for funding to support construction of
their Snowmass Transit Station (STS) project. The Town has been working on this project with
the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority (RFTA) and the members of the Elected Officials
Transportation Committee (EOTC).
The County is a founding member of both RFTA and the EOTC. The EOTC has collectively
committed $6 million in funding to the project with the understanding that the project will
replace the existing RFTA station at the Town’s West Village mall, built in the late 1960’s. The
project will consolidate the Town’s local transit service with RFTA’s regional service in one
location. This will help the local service function as a feeder service to the regional system. The
consolidation will also help remove local trips from the regional system, which is operating over
capacity during peak periods. Movement between the Town of Snowmass Village and the City
of Aspen is a significant component of RFTA’s service and a major benefit to the mitigation of
traffic congestion. Therefore, diverting local riders to the local service will expand capacity for
those who need to utilize the regional system.
