The SWC plays a critical role in supporting the County’s Strategic Plan by promoting the three core focus areas of 1) a flourishing natural & built environment, 2) a prosperous economy and 3) a livable and supportive community. We believe this proposed project will further advance our pursuit of these areas. The landfill is an important resource that is rapidly reaching capacity, so the SWC has constantly worked to develop a number of successful and innovative programs over the years that help our community properly and sustainably manage natural resources, extend the life of the landfill and manage costs associated with the proper disposal of waste. Construction waste is one of the greatest stressors on our landfill so this project is essential to help us reduce and reuse the materials coming out of this sector. The project will bring additional engagement and educational opportunities to the public that will cause our community to increase their knowledge of and interaction with the SWC more directly. This will be accomplished in direct outreach on key environmental issues like natural resource conservation as well as by bringing people onsite through offering low-cost home furnishings and building materials. We are encouraged that new users will take an interest in this program and product offerings as well as the possibility of creating sustainable employment opportunities within the County. Please consider the Pitkin County SWC’s grant application for expanding their material reuse program. PITKIN COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS Kelly McNicholas Kury, Chair
