Box 2118 Basalt, Colorado 81621 Job No. 198 632 ', Subject: Observation of Excavation, Proposed Residence, 0747 West Sopris ~' Creek Road, Pitkin County, Colorado ', Dear Ms. Stitt: As requested, a representative of Hepworth-Pawlak Geotechnical, Inc. observed the excavation at the subject site on September 15, 1998 to evaluate the soils exposed for ', foundation. support. The findings of our work and recommendations for the foundation ', design are presented in this report. The work was done in accordance with our. ', agreement for geotechnical engineering services to you, dated September 14, 1998. Potential geologic hazards at the site were addressed by CTL/Thompson in their report dated July 25, 1995, Job No. GS-1569. The proposed residence will be a two story wood frame structure over a crawlspace. Spread footings sized for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,000 psf were assumed ', in the design. At the time of our visit to the site, the foundation excavation had been cut in one level ', from 2 to 7 feet below the adjacent ground surface. The soils exposed in the bottom of ', the excavation consisted of gravelly silty sand. Results of swell-consolidation testing ~' performed on a sample of the sand taken from the site, shown on Fig. 1, indicate the soils have low. compressibility under existing moisture conditions and light loading and ', a low collapse potential (settlement under constant load) when wetted. The sample showed moderate to high compressibility upon additional loading after wetting. Another sample tested had a dry density of 93 pcf, a moisture content of 4.3 % and 26% passing the No. 200 sieve (silt and clay fraction). No free water was encountered in the excavation and .the soils were slightly moist. ', Considering the conditions exposed in the excavation and the nature of the proposed construction, spread footings placed on the undisturbed natural soil designed for an allowable soil bearing pressure of 2,000 psf should be adequate for support of the ', proposed residence. The exposed soils tend to compress when wetted and there could ~, be some post-construction settlement of the foundation if the bearing soils become wet. Footings should be a minimum width of l6 inches. for. continuous walls and 2 feet for ', columns. Loose and disturbed soils in footing areas should be moistened and ', compacted or removed and the bearing level extended down to the undisturbed natural soils.. Exterior footings should be provided with adequate soil cover above their bearing elevations for frost protection. Continuous foundation walls should be reinforced top and bottom to span local anomalies such as by assuming an unsupported length of at Mary Stitt ', September 17, 1998 Page 2 least 12 feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining structures should be designed to resist a lateral. earth pressure based on an equivalent fluid unit weight of at least 45 pcf for on-site soil, excluding oversized rock as backfill. A perimeter foundation drain ', should be provided to prevent temporary buildup of hydrostatic pressure behind the ' walls and prevent wetting of the lower level. Structural fill placed within floor slab areas can consist of the on-site soils compacted to at least 95 % of standard Proctor density at a moisture content near optimum.. Backfill placed around the structure should be compacted and the surface graded to prevent ponding within at least 10 feet of the ~ i building. The recommendations submitted in .this letter are based on .our observation of the soils exposed within the foundation excavation and do not include subsurface exploration to ~ evaluate the subsurface conditions within. the loaded depth of foundation influence. This study is based on the assumption that soils beneath the footings have equal or better support than those exposed. The risk of foundation movement may be greater ', than indicated in this report because of possible variations in the subsurface .conditions. ~' In order to reveal the. nature and extent of variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation, drilling would be required. It is possible the data obtained by subsurface exploration could change the recommendations contained in this letter. The present situation does not comply with the provisions of the 1041, specifically items 5C and 5D. The Oak brush on the South East area of the home needs to be cleared of the ladder fuels that lie between the larger Gambrel trunks. Item 5C requires that Brush Clumps be in spacing at a minimum of two times the height of the fuel and the clumps no larger than 10 feet in diameter. All deadfall needs to be removed out to a 100 foot perimeter. !, The South East land area has vertical drop which would create rapid spread ~ ~' of fie and radiant heat. Inlight of the fact that the home exterior is sided with shingles this places the property at significant risk if the brush is not to the minimum of the 1041 and maintained. ~'' If I can be of further assistance please feel free to cal me. Our geologic. hazard evaluation is based on a review of published geologic maps and literature, a geologic .field reconnaissance and our experience. This letter includes a description of general site conditions, geologic conditions and geologic hazards and presents our i recommendations for mitigation of geologic hazards. • The Pickus property is located adjacent to the West Sopris Creek Road in ,, Pitkin County, Colorado. The town of Basalt, Colorado is approximately 3 miles to 1 the northeast. The site is on the south facing valley slopes on the north side of West Sopris Creek.• West Sopris Creek Road borders the property to the south. ~: Access to the situ is from West Sopris Creek Road to an access drive. An existing irrigation ditch crosses the site from west to east below the planned building envelope. Ground surfaces slope down to the south at grades measured and visually estimated at 15 to 25 percent. # CTL/THOMPSON, tNC. Outcrops of the Jurassic aged Morrison Formation are exposed in the slopes on the upper parts of the property. The lower parts of the property are underlain by bedrock of the :Jurassic aged Entrada Formation which is covered by coUuvial (gravity deposited} soils derived from the bedrock in the slopes above the site. The Morrison 'Formation 'consists of variegated shale and mudstone, light gray sandstone and local beds of:gray and green limestone. Th.e underlying Entrada 1=ormatiort consists of .light gray to orange crossbedded sandstone. Bedrock orientation observed in the outcrops above the planned building envelope dips into the slopes importing a "favorable" orientation from. a slope stability standpoint Two potentiaTgeologic hazards were observed at the site, a potentalvrockfall hazar and~a poten~al slope wash hazard. The primary .hazard is from potential rockfall from an outcrop approximately 20 feet high by 20 feet wide that is above the ~ west part of he planned building envelope. The rock feature is keyed into the slope and its base has a favorable dip into the slope. The center of mass of the rock l feature appears to be behind the pivot point at the toe of thebase. ~n our.-opinion !' potential failure~~of the entire rock~mass is low and mitigation of potential rockfall due to movement of the entire rock feature is not warr~rted. The face of the rock feature ,~,w_.w~.:; _ ~. ~.~.~. ~_ _ ___. however, appears to be a potentially active source area for small rockfalls. We qualitatively rate the degree of risk from potential rockfall as "moderate°. „and recommend rock scaling as mitigation. We believe the rock scaling will reduce the degree of risk from "moderate" to "low' : Rock scaling must be performed with care - to ensure that the stability of the rock feature is not adversely effected. Scaling ~~ operations should be performed by an experience company. An experienced rock scaling contractor that we have worked with in the past is Yenter and Sans Blasting, Inc. in Morrison, Colorado. We should view the rock feature when scaling is -' MS. The potentiarsl©pewas." hazard is due to a small, sparsely vegetated basin above the drainage that runs through the west part of the planned building footprint. _ . _~:,~ . In, our opinion -this fiazard is comparatively low, however, surface drainage needs to ensure that drainage in this area is routed down, around and away from the planned building. We recommend that a drainage swale at least 3 feet deep and 8 feet wide be incorporated into the site grading. The swale should extend around the ' planned building footprint to a point at least 8 feet downhill of the planned building. We appreciate the opportunity to work with you on this project.
