Dear Mr. Vannice: As requested, we have coadncted a subsoil stn or design of foundations at the subject site. 1 ~, Subsurface conditions encountered in the explorawry borings driAed is the propos~ building area consist of about 2 feet of topsoil overlying stiff to very stiff sandy sil~y clay. Weathered to hard claystone bedrock was encottnteted beneath the clay at depths between 9 and 15 feet. T8e clay sods +~ claystone bedrock possess expansion potential when wetted. Groundwater was not eneounteted in the borings at the timeof ', drilling or when checked 3 days Later. ~ k The proposed residence can be founded on spread fn~.btings placed on the natural subsoils and designed for an allowable bearing pressdste of 3,000 psf. The footings. should also be designed. far a minimum dead load pressure of 1,000 psf. The exp lion potential of the subgrade ~ouid be evaluated at the time of constntction. Drilled p s that extend into the bedrock can be used to limit the rids of foundation movement. The report which follows descr~bts oitr exploran summarizes our findi~s, and presents our recommendations. It is impo t 8t we provide consultapon during design, and field services during con#trncti to review d monitor the implementation of the geotechnical recommendatiot~si. SI~ CONDITIONS The site was vacant at the time of our field work- The ground surface is relatively flat with a gentle slope down to the south. The terrain. becomes steeper to the north. Vegetation consists of brush, glass and weeds. . F'LBLD EXPLORATION The field exploration for the residence was conduced on September 27, 1999. Three exploratory borings wore drilled at the loca$ons shown on Fig. 1 to evaluate the subsurface conditions. The borings were advanced`with 4 incb diameter wntinuous flight auger powered by `a tnuk mo d I.ongyeaz BK-511:ID drill rig. The borings were logged by a repres~tative of H worth-Pawlak Geoteolntical, Inc. Samples of the subsoils were en with a 2 inch I.D. spoon sampler. The sampler was driven into the subsoils various depth with blows from a 140 pound hammer falling 30 inches_ This test isi sitviiar to the standard peneaation test descn'bed by ASTM Method D-1586_ The pe~ation resistance values are an indication of the relative density or consistency of the subsoils and hardness of the bedrock. Depths at which the sat~Ies were taken and the penetration resistance values are shown on the Logs of Exploratory Borings, Fig. 2. Thd samples ~re returned to our laboratory fez review by the project engineer cad testing. SUB3URFAC~ CONDITIONS Crraphic logs of the subsurface profiles encountered at the site are shown oa Fig. 2. Below about 2 feel of orgaaia topsoil, the subsoils consist df stiff to very stiff ~~AUG, 26. 2002z' S,15PM CARCL DOPKIN REAL ESTATE j -3- No.7o6 P, a?,07:4 sandy silty clay. At depths between about 9 and 15 feet~n the borings, eathered and medium hazd to very haikl. claystone bedrock was encountered. The soil encountered in the borings are sinular to those encountered at other n~arby lots. The clay and weathered clayston portions of these soils can possess au expansion potential when wetted. Laboratory g performed oa samples obtained during rice field exploration included natural moisture coateAt and density. Swe nsoiidation testing was performed on.relatively uadistttrbed drive samples o e cia~ subsoils and weather elay'stotte. The swell-consolidation test results, presented on Figs. 4 through 6, indi re low compressibility under relatively light surcharge loading and typically low to moderate expansion potential when wetted under a constant light st~rehaxge. A clay sample from Soriag 1 at S feet showed a low collapse potential (settlernetit under constant load} when wetted and toderate to high corapxesstbiliry upon increased loading after wetting. The deeper very hard claystone would. not b cxpetted to Dave expansion potential. The laboratory testing is s1TM+~+a*l~ed in Tabl No free water was encountered in the borings at time of drilling or when checked 3 days later. The subsoils were slightly m~ ist to moist. t F'OUIr~ATION BEARING CaWD1TION8 The clay subsoil are generally stiff to very stiff with moderate beating ~pacity and variable setdement/heavepo~ential, especiaily when wetted. Weathered to hard, clays[one bedrock was encountered beneath the clays Ott depths between 9 and l5 feet and was generally found to have a low to moderate expansion potential when wetted with swell pressures measured is the range of 4,000 tg18,000 psf. The expansion potential can probably be tritio red by load concenaatloa on spread tootiags to reduce or prevent swelling in the event of wetting below the fotmdation bearing level. Surface runoff; landscape irrigation, and utility leakage are posss'ble sources of water which could tense wetting. The expansion potential of the subgra a should be ev3lnated at the time of construction. As an ah~rnative to beaziag on the up~er soils and m ~imit the `~`~ ~ A~~AUG, 26, 20021' S,1SPM CARCL DOPKiN REAL ESTATE ~. i -4- risk of differential foundation movement and bt N0. 106 P, 9'•~?a It distress, a drilled pier foutulatioa can be used. Drilled piers should extend into th underlyiag~ard claystone bedrock. If a drilled pier foundation is considered, we shoal contacted to provide ~iga parameters. DESIGN $ECOMy.ENDATiON5 FOUNDATIONS Considering the subsurface conditions encoua~red in the exploratory borings and the nature of rite proposed construction, spread footings placed oa undisturbed natural clay soils or cIaystone bedrock can be used for building support with some risk of differential settletnent/heave. The design. and construction criteria presented below should be observed for a spread footing foundation system. 1) Footings placed on the natural clay oils or claystane bedrock can be designed for as aAowable bearing pressure of 3,000 psf. The footings should also be designed for a minimum dead load presstt~ of 1,000 psf. In order to satisfy the minimum.dead load pressure under lightly loaded areas, it maybe necessary to conceacrate loads by using a gra beam and pad system.
