Box 1640 Basalt, CO 81621 Attn: Ted Guy Gentlemen: As requested, we observed the excavation for the proposed residence at the subject site on August 18, 1986. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the soils exposed in the excavation for foundation support. We were also asked to comment on the feasi- bility of the site for installation of an individual septic disposal system. Chen & Associates, Inc, previously conducted a preliminary geotechnical study for the Ruedi South Shore Sub- division, dated November 16, 1982, and made an engineering geologic evaluation July 28, 1983 under Job No. 24,838. At the time of our site visit, the excavation had been cut into multiple levels between a depth of about 3 to 9 feet below the existing ground surface. The soil profile exposed consisted mainly of sandy silty clay with some gravelly zones. The clays were slightly moist to moist, stiff and light brown to reddish brown. There is about 3 feet of topsoil exposed. The results of consolidation tests performed on hand-driven liner samples of the soils exposed in the excavation are shown on Fig. 1. The soil profile is similar to that described in our previous report of November, 1982• We understand the single family residence is designed to be supported with spread footings imposing a maximum bearing pres- sure of 2500 psf. Based on the general type of construction and the soil conditions exposed, we believe spread footings placed on the natural clays and designed for a maximum bearing pressure of 2500 psf can be used. In the shallower cut areas of about 3 feet all topsoil should be removed. Loose or disturbed soil should also be removed and the foundation bearing level extended down to the lower firm natural soils. The foundation bearing level should have adequate depth for frost protection. Continuous ,~_ Theodore K, Guy Associates, PC August 25, 1986 Page 2 foundation walls should be designed to span an unsupported length of at least 10 feet. Foundation walls acting as retaining structures should also be designed to resist a lateral earth pressure corresponding to an equivalent fluid unit weight of 45 pcf. An underdrain system should be provided to prevent buildup of hydrostatic pressure behind foundation walls and prevent wetting at each level of excavation. Foundation wall backfill should be placed and compacted to at least 9016 of standard Proctor density and the backfill surface should be graded to drain away from the structure a minimum distance of about 10 feet. We understand that percolation rates obtained in shallow test pits just below the topsoil layer at the site yielded rates between about 8 and 20 minutes per inch. Apparently, there is a pervious zone within or just below the topsoil layer. We expect that percolation rates in the underlying natural soils will be slower than those measured. We recommend that the proposed septic disposal area percolation pits be deepened to about 5 to 5 1/2 feet below existing ground surface and the percolation rates determined. Seasonal perched water conditions within or just below the topsoil layer could cause inundation of the septic disposal area. We recommend that the perched water flow uphill of the disposal area be interrupted by either excavating through the topsoil layer and into the natural clays or by providing a relatively shallow trench drain. We see no evidence of shallow groundwater level or bedrock condition that would otherwise preclude the use of an infiltration disposal system, provided the percolation rates are acceptable. The recommendations submitted in this letter are based on our observation of the soils exposed within the foundation excavation and the backhoe pit excavated in 1982. We have assumed the conditions observed in the excavation represent those within the depth of influence of the foundation. Variations in the subsurface conditions below the excavation could change the recommendations contained in this letter.
